a tank of that caliber could also be used as a salt water aquarium....I know that ciclids have cool personalities and I used to have a 110 gallon ciclid tank...I waited the 3 years for the last ciclid to die. Then I converted. The last ciclid to go was a red devil and he indeed was a nasty ass red devil!! He got 5 X his size once he was the only fish in the tank. He did, eventually go to fishy heaven and now I have a 300 salt tank, I love it. Give it a shot, you'll love it.....
@ frewcc no they don't they over stock them in pet stores and zoos to help them be less aggressive they don't need to be overcrowed they will not live long that way
its good to see all of the comments that say african cichlids should be overstocked! becuase they are all 100% correct. African cichlids are totally different than south and central american cichlids....with africans, those more fish in the tank, the calmer they will be! in the wild this is exactly how they live, with fish swimming around everywhere! the less amount of fish in the tank, the more fights...its as simple as that
i agree. makes me laugh when people complain about it being crowded. Cichlids are not typical fish. they need to have overcrowding so there is no targeting.
I 100000% agree with TheHomeopathic and MrWright24!!!! they have to be crowded or else they will start fighting for the teratories! crowding makes them feel at home.
its funny to see people without the knowledge of cichlids say that that tank is crowded its just right for them they have to be stocked at high levels i see people keep thier arowanas in six foot tanks thats wrong.keeping channel cats in any size tank is wrong watch planet earth and you can see them in their natural habitat
I have Cichlid tanks, and honestly people, Cichlids do love to be crowded it calms them down. The less fish the more tension the more fights. In Londons national aqauruim there are far more fish with less space. This Tank is well lit and the the fish look incredibly healthy and happy !! Thats not easy to do. Well done very very nice tank. I myself have the ship in my tank also :) they love its hidey holes lol. well done! (i will post my fish tank next year)
@MrWright24 yeah, i agree, i ahd a 70 gal. with only 10 ciclids, and they fought all the time, then that tank prung a leak, then they were put in a 40 gal. they never fought, buut then i got rid of them :(
@irbenson i was obviously talking about the fish in the vid i was talking in you idiot. are you one of those tools that front with pedantic bullshit about walking catfish if you hear someone say fish swim in water?
actualy i thought that your statement was completely wrong but i do want you to leave it up so everyone else that know how to keep fish can get a good lol out of it. one day in school you will hear every man is a human but not every human is a man
sorry snow freak i was unaware that you may not of visited a quality aqautics establishment that actually sell mirror backgrounds especially for tanks. only a true idiot would think of putting a mirror behind a tank!!
i think alot of people are confused. yes they need to be in groups. but also keep in mind that he has a mirrored back splash so the number of fish you see is double whats really in the tank. keep your eye on the yellow fish if you dont believe me. so whatever number of fish you think he has divide that by 2 and theres the ACTUAL amount in the tank. nice setup by the way
cichlids do better in large groups for one reason, they cant isolate on eachother as well,u just gotta be careful what fish u put together and keep on eye on newly added fish, and they like lots of rocks and hiding places
its not overstocked, idiot. these fish live better when there is more fish around. have you seen the lakes in Africa where these fish originate from?? they're chalk full of fish EVERY where you look and they love it. they are community fish by nature. they aren't 'lone-shark' type fish at all.
They're NOT community fish. They're very very aggressive. As I understand it, the reason they're kept overstocked is because if there's just a few fish, one fish can end up getting chased so much that it stresses out. Overstocking is done to "spread the aggression around."
...yes I'm very aware that they are aggressive, I OWN SOME. but that doesn't mean that they aren't community fish! go look how they act in the wild, they ARE a community fish. Bettas for example are NOT community fish, but these ARE even thought they are somewhat aggressive. mine don't bother any of my peacocks and they are all male.
Yea overstocking reduces aggression, but why even do that? Youll have one nice looking dominant fish, the rest will look plain and have no personality.
And filtration really doesn't have a whole lot to do with how many fish you put in the tank. Skip water changes because of big filters and youll still end up having water problems at some point.
If you're going to keep cichlids that way, let the people who really know what they're doing take them and get a tank full of tetras.
Are there any powerheads in there? I say lose the air pumps and add a few powerheads (cichlids enjoy the currents) that can add oxygen/flow in the water. This will help prevent algae and keep your fish healthy and active.
Not over stocked for a Malawi tank. As long as he has good filtration thats about perfect for Malawi as they prefer crowds and will even crowd themselves even if the tank is not.
Fuck marine it's boring cichlids all the way

Overstocking african cichlids to spread out agression is sometimes recommended, but that doesn't mean fill every inch of the tank with fish.
Personally, there comes a point when the tank is too overstocked to even enjoy watching them. This is one of them.
