Yeah I love the old HST's. Brings back fond memories as a kid watchin em in Chippenham station. Bit loud though - although - they seem to have silenced em a bit now.
I think Firsts dynamic livery doesnt really suite any of their fleet except the FCC 319s. The HSTs on the GW main line have lost that distinctive edge now that they are the same colours as Turbos. At Twyford for instance, you used to have that great contrast of the long obsolete NSE livery on the 165/166s- in the Thames Trains days, representing the locals and then for expresses you have the Executive/Swallow livery or lattering Great Western green and white on HSTs.
Its nice to hear the MTUs when underload, as for the turbo sound some people miss the sound, these v16's have 4 turbos as the paxman turbo took awhile to crank up as it had to maintain 32psi at 1500rpm. if anyone is interested in just the mtu and paxman engines running watch my vids. cheers
I too have a soft spot for Warships, including the North British type 4 "Warships" (D600-D604). To name them ... Active, Ark Royal, Bulldog, Conquest, and Cossack. I too have a very soft spot for St Ives, and then Westerns ( Co--Co) and Warships (Bo-Bo) that pulled me down there all those years ago. Maybe next year me and my partner, Morag, can meet up with you in The Castle in Fore Street?
Cheers! Best Wishes ...
Neil
PS. Can't wait for your BVE St Ives to St Erth route
well its not so bad that all the paxmans are going mtu's still have a deep base sound to them and they should have a turbo on them to give back their wonderful scream and then they wont sound that bad
I've been lineside for so many of em'(MTU's) now that I have to say I'm seriously whipped by them.....a cross between a Deltic and a Western or am I getting carried away with it!!!!!
Basically MTU's are HELL!!!!! (in the positive sense) Thanks for you comment!!
In the late 60s we used to go to Sandy in Bedfordshire at weekends to the East Coast Main Line. The stars of the line then were the Deltics (I cleared the class in 1970 with D9018 "Ballymoss") and I used to think then that nothing could ever replace them. In those days we had so much more to enjoy "locowise" didn't we? Thank goodness the Brush 4s are still around today, top loco. You're absolutely right though, my interest in HSTs really happened in the early 90s and has never gone away.
your right there regarding Brush 4's. To think I'll get out of bed to go and video one....what's it come too...Yes!!!! Doncaster December 1974 on a Saturday Saver from Brum...Nimbus!!!cleared em' all for sight!!
Your right BVEboxcars, to think that most of us wouldn't give em' a second look from the 70's until the late 80's but at the start of the 90's all of a sudden we deemed them loco hauled...after a fashion...just desperate for something to rate, speaking personally!!!!! LOL
