@muiiz1991 According to government statistics, the population of Singapore as of 2009 was 4.99 million, of whom 3.73 million were Singaporean citizens and permanent residents (termed "Singapore Residents"). There were 3.2 million citizens in 2009.Various Chinese linguistic groups formed 74.2% of Singapore's residents, Malays 13.4%, Indians 9.2%, while Eurasians, Arabs and other groups formed 3.2%.
Singapore is 15% muslim, and the crescent moon was added to the flag to reassure the Malay population that Singapore wasn't going communist in the new flag (having only 3 stars, similar to the Malayan communists, or 5 stars, similar to China, would provoke unease).
actually, the crescent moon is to signify a young nation rising, while the 5 stars represent our country's values: democracy, justice, equality, prosperity/peace and progress.
you're absolutely right, but the origin of the moon and the 5 stars were as described in the initial reply; i.e. having only 3/5 stars without a moon, especially with a red background would be a terrible idea. This was as described by Toh Chin Chye, who was part of the committee to decide on a flag.
@uudrakgvens94 Islam is a major religion in Singapore! 15% of Singaporeans are Muslims.
The crescent moon *originated* to represent Singapore's Muslim population and the five stars, the Chinese population.
Statute defines the crescent moon to *symbolise* a rising young nation and the five stars, the values of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.
While the moon did come about "like muslim countries", today, we identify more strongly with the symbolism than the origins of the flag.

It's true we have a moon "like muslim countries" but today, Singaporeans identify more strongly with the symbolism than the origins of the flag.
I impressed with singapore development and strong economy. but I'm not racist person like the other from 'negeri seberang kita' but when Malay will become the 1st singapore president? that's question always haunted me because when we all backtrack to singapore history, Singapore is lead by Malay not chinese because chinese is just immigrants (sorry if my english's not good)
point 1) A Malay can and will be president if the people of Singapore decides to one day to ELECT one. Being "there first" does not entitles someone to leadership position in a democratic nation. Point 2) If you go back far enough, everyone are technically immigrants from somewhere else ." Malay" Melaka did not get established till 1400. Even Parameswara "came from" SriVijaya, both names reflects Hindu Influences. Parameswara is in Sanskrit another name for Shiva. Was he Malay? Hindu? Think!
I think also Singapore never become a Malaysian state again. If Malaysian politics more tense due to BN government, Maybe Penang be like Singapore become an Independent Republic.
well, no one can predict the future. even all european countries now become the united european union, cuz no one can really be a totally 100% independent country in terms of everything. only the border remains, but manpower, resources, defense, monetary, all have been shared in europe.
Singapore national language is Malay. But we are multi-cultural and we respect every race and religion as equal. Kami takde NEP or whatever policy to "preserve" the rights of others. If you want it, you achieve it YOURSELF.
I'm a Singaporean. It's ok being a small dot. At least we are doing well. Our first language is English and i think most Singaporean are fine with it. It is also fair to all the races. Singapore is an independent country so why will she reunite with Malaysia again. No offence to anyone, just my personal point of view.
@kklie I'm a Malaysian, and I will say that Singapore will never reunite with Malaysia, but remember, Singapore was a Malaysian territory, because of that, we share a lot of similarities. Now, we are separated by that 2-km wide Tebrau strait. We still share the similarities, and thus why should people are arguing about us? It's 42 years now, but Singaporeans are still rising, 'dengan semangat yang baru'. Together we rise, together we acheive success.
there was a vote in 1961 for them whether to join malaya become malaysia or not, or maybe join indonesia. but then they all decided to join (including singapore), but not brunei.
i'm malaysian. singapore national anthem is really very nice. but sadly, many malaysians think singapore national language & anthem is in english (especially those staying in the east, central and northern region). Singapore govt has to do something to correct this misconception to its neighbours, especially Malaysia. (eg. widen and strenghtening the use of Malay in the republic - it's the National Language of Singapore). Don't forget that.
its ok. so many world miss perception out there. england & holland is a country, malay is the only people of malaysia, europe consists only white people, iranians are arabs, there is only han people in china, canada is english-only speaking country, sudanese are all muslims, no arabs in israel, america is the name of the country, mexico speak mexican, indonesians are all malay ppl. that's why we have wikipedia & such things for people to learn what is the real thing out there about world facts.
I agree that many Singaporean don't speak Malay anymore except Malays in Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew criticising Singaporean don't understand Malay language especially Malays who don't speak Malay. Singapore must wide the usage of Malay language in any form. I hope their education system changed so Malay language is a mandatory language in school lead the Singaporean identity preserved and understanding Majulah Singapura. It will ease to Malaysia so the can live in one tongue language.
@zharfantk1990 In a democratic country you can't simply enforce changes like that to people without going through some kind of voting. What language would you think the majority of the population would choose to use??Does mastering Malay language help them compete with the world??
orang asli = original people... malays are actually immigrants from other parts of indonesia (first originate in southern china or formosa, migrated towards the phillipines, and then to other parts of indonesia).. orang asli are the original people/abroginies of the malay peninsula..

Sometimes you have to visit Singapore to shop and improve the economy just like Singaporeans cross over to Malaysia for holiday and shopping. Exchange of barang barang is good...lol
I had been Singapore for 4 times. Everytime when I hear this anthem at Singapore, my heart becomes excited.....even Singapore is not my own country.....I'm so proud that this song ignites my own country concept - being a Chinese.

I had been Singapore for 4 times. Everytime when I hear this anthem at Singapore, my heart becomes excited.....even Singapore is not my own country.....I'm so proud that this song ignites my own country concept - being a Chinese.

Very dignified, very meaningful and very moving. Japan needs a national anthem like this one.
