Would you advise lubricating the surface with linseed oil before misting? Also, is it a good idea to add a little medium (such as Oleogel) to my paint before misting, or is the best approach just to use pure lead white?
you could use linseed to lubricate the surface though it should be ok if your mix is correct .you want the mix to be about 50% transparency [ as if you were putting rice paper over the painting]. most glazing mediums are ok including liquin.
How sad. This is a pathetic demonstration, a foray into obscurantism, and accomplishes nothing toward creating a good painting. Strongly suggest that no one waste time barking up this tree of failure.
Misting creates subtle shading in painting that can then be glazed with transparent colour. Blending the misting layer down and lifting paint from areas helps to create depth in the painting.
What a great technique. I find this a lifesaver if I feel my underpainting has gone too dark either in parts or in total. It's kind of like a veil. One drawback though; the first time I tried it I used a stiff bristle-brush and it started to scalp some weak underlayers:-)
@spaceinfun .the original paint was lead white modern version if flake white though better results can be achived useing cheminitz white,if you can get it

@josvanr hi
Misting as an underlayer adds far more subtle shadows that you can achieve using al prima painting.it originated in the Venitian school .
