Hopefully, when i get old and about to die, i'll be able to tell my grand children" i went here and there, i did this and that, i meet him and her and them, i ate this and that, and i did what i wanted to do, and i am happy about it and i regret nothing" instead of i graduated from college and spend my life in a spinning chair behind a monitor.
@ilan134 You're right, however the whole thing isn't about how stupid he was. It's the choice he made. Had the braveness (or stupidity feel free to choose) to broke out, to leave behind society and to try to make his own living the way he wanted.
There are people who live like that for all their life, indeed. But they never knew another ways, like having cars, internet and other comfy stuff. They were born into this situation, learnt how to live in the wild.
@Rhiannon9999 MY friend dont confuse free choice with no posibilites.Alexander WILINGFULLY left civilization behind just for the sake of hapiness.there are some people that have no choice but to live "in the wild".But the movie is not about them. Its about those who seek something better than the comforts of a material life.
@Pillowhuggerr Actually I think the same as you. In my former comment I replied to @ilan134 comment, where he/she stated that people, who lived in that area, where Chris died, thought he was a total moron. And I reflected to that, as I understand why people who lived there, thought this, BUT the movie/book/Chris life isn't about that. He wanted to find a better way to live, and I respect him for that. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
And the only thing I want to do now is , leave my fck'ng heavy paying job; leave these strangely woven relations behind and venture; venture INTO THE WILD
I see that there are 13 dislikes...I can only imagine that they are from the most superficial materialistic people in the world, which I'm sure have their sad existence right here in the ol' US of A.

Its strange how people believe going to a specific place will give them the freedom theyre looking for. I live in Finland and dreaming about leaving everything and go live somewhere else where i can find freedom and inner peace, live in the nature, far from society. And at the same time someone else, somewhere else in the world, is dreaming about going to Finland to find their inner peace and live far from the society. Maybe the only place you can find your freedom and peace is within yourself.
@kallvarshow exactly man! you dont need nature and beauty to be happy and peacefull you need yourself. Sure the nature and beauty helps but really its all on how you make it.
@kallvarshow Yes, as a soul searcher and someone who has tried to know herself well, I can attest that freedom and peace are states of mind. I also think that they are not permanent, like happiness, it is never permanent, but there are fleeting moments of it.
Ascetics may achieve permanent freedom, peace or happiness in their minds, but most people do not have the luxury to withdraw from life and be supported. ;)
I deem it a far greater challenge to achieve those states in the 'normal' world.
@kallvarshow It's the place but it's also the people plus building no emotional tie to the people you meet from knowing them such a short time is a plus. and just altogether getting away from what we are expected to be in society to be free from the grip that the modern day has put on us.
@EDVM13 yes, absolutely, and thats sad; that the society we've built makes us so incapable of feeling free and independent, that we feel like prisoners even though we can go wherever we want (almost..). Its scary. I am myself one of those people who finds it very hard to find peace and inner freedom living in this society, im not sure i will ever feel free and happy living like this.
Yes, we are free to go to wherever we want to go, and we are free to do whatever we want. The thing is that society gives "facilities" to the people that follow it's rules, that's sometimes it is pretty hard to be different in this society.
We are not all the same and not all of us can live folowing the same values...
Society wants to tell us what we "should do" and what we "should not do". I think that's pretty sad, but i understand they're just trying to keep things in order..
You are so right... I dream of the same things. I would love to go to a place that seems wild to me, like Finland! Maybe we should house swap. You can come here to Massachusetts. :D
@Mouseth Hah,maybe we should!Probably just to realize that it doesnt matter that much where u live;that living in an other part of the world won't heal a troubled soul or give inner peace. That u gotta search for that damn peace within yourself, not at some random country that seems wild and free.Im sure it might help going to another place, but in the end i think the key to peace is inside yourself.
But hey, if u ever visit FIN, make sure to go somewhere else than helsinki :D lapland for example!
@kallvarshow What is so true about your statement is that a brazilian like myself always thought Finland was just the place to live among nature finding freedom and inner peace. Luck on your search
It's not the society it self, but how we have choosen to live in that sociaty that upset us. But I guess the most important thing is to brake all patterns, to get scared; because fear brings all your senses and emotions to life.
@kallvarshow agreed. i think this about cities a lot...people pass each other on the highway, one headed to a new city for greener pastures, the other headed to the other's former city for the same reason.
@kallvarshow I agree 100%! I'm a Canadian and as Canadians we're constantly leaving our own country to travel and find happiness elsewhere. Meanwhile, we are the second largest country in the world and most haven't experienced what our own country has to offer before leaving. I think Australia is similar. Most Aussies have seen more of Canada than most Canadians and most Canadians have seen more of Australia than most Aussies!
@kallvarshow Come to the Canada! I would love to trade you places, but I can't speak Finnish that well! I know how you feel about the inner peace but, I have I have to say, Canada's forest's and fresh water will amaze you when you experience it, I still today am still fascinated, so please do yourself a favor, come and visit. :)
@Dnalyr12 i will absolutely come and visit your lovely country one day :) from looking at pics on google (lololol) canada looks stunningly beautiful! A bit like Norway which im totally in love with since driving around there for a week two years ago. One day we climbed up a mountain and we were just sitting there, next to a waterfall, drumming with my fathers shamanic drum and the sound of the drum was echoing between the mountains. One of my coolest experiences ever :)
@kallvarshow Sounds exhilarating! You can get much and more here in B.C. on Vancouver Island, where I am! Just wait, your mind will be changed, it will be like looking through a new pair of eyes! (:
@kallvarshow True.. But often if you live in society there's too many distractions to actually find your freedom and peace within yourself. Nobody really knows what peace is anymore, nor true silence. I live in Canada in the city. There have only been a few times where I have experienced true silence and connection with nature. You know it when you feel it and that's when you can truly discover who you are as an individual. That's what people are truly chasing they just don't realize it.
@chvick i think youre right. I live in a small town, close to deep forests and the sea, and im often going out in the nature to get away from all those distractions, to listen to myself and just breathe. In the summers im often going with my canoe to a small islet where noone lives or ever visits, except me. Its my favorite place in the whole world because there im all alone with only the nature and my own thoughts to listen to, its a place where i can truly
@chvick .......search inside myself and try to figure out who i am.
But even when im going with the canoe to "my" islet, i still dont feel completely free, and i dont know if it is because i know im going back to my life as a part of the society or if it is deeper in my soul. Maybe both?
@kallvarshow Really interesting! You're lucky to have that personal sacred spot to go to every year. The sad reality i've come up with in my own life as well is we have to ability to be completely free we just choose not to take it for various reasons. One of those reasons is that society has a grasp on us. It takes a special person and extreme courage to give up all ties to society. Only then can you truly know yourself.. it's nice and healthy to get a taste whenever possible though.
@kallvarshow Whether that grasp is the financial aspect holding us in place, family, friends, etc. A lot of times we have strong ties to those important things in our lives and prohibit us from truly letting go of it all like Christopher McCandless was able to do. I still think that he only made that jump because of his family issues that caused him to break away and maybe because of this it was easier for him to do so. Really interesting to talk about this.
@chvick it sure is interesting talking about these kind of stuff! And with people from other places in the world with (maybe) different experiences and ways of seeing things.
I think youre absolutely right, every time im thinking about leaving, i get so scared, cause i have no idea what it is to not be a part of the society.I just turned 20, and this far everyone and everything has told me that money is the answer tohappiness. To hear that your whole life makes it feel almost impossible to leave
the only thing i know is that this song make me feel sad and in the same time give me lot of hope , i can't understand it's a very weird situation isn't it ???
Thankyou so much for putting that together. Sums up my feeling and thoughts perfectly along with the pictures. Life has become to shallow, american idol, jersey shore, etc....
@flekisinga Wise words indeed, and thats what I think too. I'm trying to find my "free spirit" but still got long way to go. I don't have to love society to love some people in it. My problem is that I see people as mass. I just need to learn love myself and other people again.
@flekisinga I've had rough times in my life and almost killed myself once. Suicide would have been ultimate form of freedom to me. But now it's all past. At the moment I think I'm having fairly great - no, really great - life. I've got lots of great things going on my life. But at the same time I can't understand other people and modern society. I'm feeling like I'm not same specie as everone else. Thats why I would like to be free. In the end I'm not ready to leave behind all the people I love.
By the way, the world and its inhabitants are not that bad. There's still a lot of beauty and love out there. Also, I think there's better ways to experience life than running off on badly planned and foolhardy trips. All the best to you all.
I don't know about any of you... but I'm HAPPY with my life and the direction it's going. I enjoy where I live and all my loved ones. You don't need to hate life to like this song.............
real strength is to live with what you have been given and still thrive...its not society thats wrong its how each one of us deals with it individually that makes it what it is...i function in society without agreeing with its rules and i am FREE.....
I live in Finland. You would think that one could find peace in here. Sadly the big world has found us and society is poisoned. 80's people were so different from what we are now; People are so selfish shallow minded beings. I live like 100 feet away from forest and go there sometimes. It's relaxing listen sounds of nature. If I could do what I really want I would leave everything behind. Of course I would turn back at some point. I would just want to be free even a litle moment.
I live in Norway. I can't live outside the society, but I love walking in the nature, in the mountains. I get lots of inspiration. I love making stories, and most of them are about people experience the nature -but never alone. Humans should not live alone.
@Testudoization I can understand you so much. But at least you live in a country (an awesome country) where the contact with society has been minimum. You guys don't have all these motorways, huge buildings and factories.
Mind you, I currently live in the UK and it's an awesome country with loads of green and where you can really feel Nature. But living in one of the Scandinavian countries has to be so inspiring.
@Testudoization Don't say that shit, I was dreaming of running away to Finland from Ireland for those very reasons, I though society would be less poisoned up there?
@Testudoization Man, I live in Serbia. Here is the same story,(except that I don't have forest near my place). In 80's people here were so happy, friendly and don't give a f about material things. Today, it's totally different. People became so selfish, material and spiritually poor (and they dont think it is problem).I really hate world that we live in today. It's good to know that there are still some people who see what surrounds us and what we become.Greetings!
@KikaBandidos Man I feel the same about my hometown. Ppl were so different (in a good way) Everything just felt right and now all you see is selfish ppl hurting one another for the name of money. It's a disgrace.
@KikaBandidos I am from Canada, and I live in a house with our own forest, and I too feel the need to flee. I live probably near what most of you dream of finding, but I Dream of a Bohemian life too, away from this forest, to be free, is not to have wide open spaces with nothing but your own intuition. What we all search for is the unfamiliar, the pure Essence of life, be concerned with everything but the minutia.
Would you mind if I mirrored this PLEASE :) Thank you!

I live in Finland and dreaming about leaving everything and go live somewhere else where i can find freedom and inner peace, live in the nature, far from society. And at the same time someone else, somewhere else in the world, is dreaming about going to Finland to find their inner peace and live far from the society. Maybe the only place you can find your freedom and peace is within yourself.
kallvarshow 4 months ago 155
@kallvarshow exactly man! you dont need nature and beauty to be happy and peacefull you need yourself. Sure the nature and beauty helps but really its all on how you make it.
LearnToUmp 4 months ago

"Maybe the only place you can find your freedom and peace is within yourself."
Right, i agree. But sometimes its hard for some of us to do that in this society.
EDVM13 4 months ago
@EDVM13 yes, absolutely, and thats sad; that the society we've built makes us so incapable of feeling free and independent, that we feel like prisoners even though we can go wherever we want (almost..). Its scary. I am myself one of those people who finds it very hard to find peace and inner freedom living in this society, im not sure i will ever feel free and happy living like this.
kallvarshow 4 months ago
@kallvarshow

@kallvarshow Best comment i've ever seen. Ever.
You are so right... I dream of the same things. I would love to go to a place that seems wild to me, like Finland! Maybe we should house swap. You can come here to Massachusetts. :D
Mouseth 3 months ago
@Mouseth Hah,maybe we should!Probably just to realize that it doesnt matter that much where u live;that living in an other part of the world won't heal a troubled soul or give inner peace. That u gotta search for that damn peace within yourself, not at some random country that seems wild and free.Im sure it might help going to another place, but in the end i think the key to peace is inside yourself.
But hey, if u ever visit FIN, make sure to go somewhere else than helsinki :D lapland for example!

It's not the society it self, but how we have choosen to live in that sociaty that upset us. But I guess the most important thing is to brake all patterns, to get scared; because fear brings all your senses and emotions to life.
hope0608 3 months ago
@kallvarshow agreed. i think this about cities a lot...people pass each other on the highway, one headed to a new city for greener pastures, the other headed to the other's former city for the same reason.
kconarro3 3 months ago
@kallvarshow I agree 100%! I'm a Canadian and as Canadians we're constantly leaving our own country to travel and find happiness elsewhere. Meanwhile, we are the second largest country in the world and most haven't experienced what our own country has to offer before leaving. I think Australia is similar. Most Aussies have seen more of Canada than most Canadians and most Canadians have seen more of Australia than most Aussies!

That's what people are truly chasing they just don't realize it.
chvick 2 months ago
@chvick i think youre right. I live in a small town, close to deep forests and the sea, and im often going out in the nature to get away from all those distractions, to listen to myself and just breathe. In the summers im often going with my canoe to a small islet where noone lives or ever visits, except me. Its my favorite place in the whole world because there im all alone with only the nature and my own thoughts to listen to, its a place where i can truly
kallvarshow 2 months ago
@chvick .......search inside myself and try to figure out who i am.
But even when im going with the canoe to "my" islet, i still dont feel completely free, and i dont know if it is because i know im going back to my life as a part of the society or if it is deeper in my soul. Maybe both?
kallvarshow 2 months ago
@kallvarshow Really interesting! You're lucky to have that personal sacred spot to go to every year. The sad reality i've come up with in my own life as well is we have to ability to be completely free we just choose not to take it for various reasons. One of those reasons is that society has a grasp on us. It takes a special person and extreme courage to give up all ties to society. Only then can you truly know yourself.. it's nice and healthy to get a taste whenever possible though.
chvick 2 months ago
@kallvarshow Whether that grasp is the financial aspect holding us in place, family, friends, etc. A lot of times we have strong ties to those important things in our lives and prohibit us from truly letting go of it all like Christopher McCandless was able to do. I still think that he only made that jump because of his family issues that caused him to break away and maybe because of this it was easier for him to do so. Really interesting to talk about this.
chvick 2 months ago
@chvick it sure is interesting talking about these kind of stuff! And with people from other places in the world with (maybe) different experiences and ways of seeing things.
I think youre absolutely right, every time im thinking about leaving, i get so scared, cause i have no idea what it is to not be a part of the society.I just turned 20, and this far everyone and everything has told me that money is the answer tohappiness. To hear that your whole life makes it feel almost impossible to leave

@flekisinga Wise words indeed, and thats what I think too. I'm trying to find my "free spirit" but still got long way to go. I don't have to love society to love some people in it. My problem is that I see people as mass. I just need to learn love myself and other people again.
Testudoization 6 months ago

Somehow this movie/songs from movie go hand in hand
with that Bob Dylan verse from "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" :
"An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it."
