This is really more of a changeup than a curveball. If you look, he is barely getting any rotation on the ball, and its really just gravity doing most of the work.
@nicknomo2 no no that pitch have a 72-78 mph the gravity doesnt help in the fall, the ball gets a front spin, that make brakes down in a trajectory 12-6 no like a usualy curveball 11-5. find the teory of how the curveball brakes and you will understand( excuse me cos my english)
@marklavic Well, I don't agree with the assesment that this is a 70 mph pitch. It looks about 60 mph to me (maybe less). Also, I'm well aware of the physics of the baseball. I don't think you are aware of the physics of gravity. 60 mph = .7s travel time. .7s of free fall = 2.2m / 6 feet of movement. This is cut in about half by the upward trajectory, resulting in the ~3 foot drop you see. The ball lacks sufficient topspin, and won't generate any downward force.
@nicknomo2 mmmm half true, but i tell you 72 mph becouse that;s my speed :s, yes gravity always helps but i tried to say is not to much, belive me that brake is so amazing
Ok this guy not only has the inverted w pitch motion, which leads to tommy john surgery (look at stephen strasburg) but he also throws curveballs like this? Man, this guys arm is fucked
@Mr4thkid It's not teaching you how, it's not trying to make you learn how, it's just showing how this guy throws a curveball, which is horrible for your arm the way he is doing it
Japan cant just claim this, ive thought about how it would work by pulling it from the front like this for a long time, i just dont have the skill to throw that way :P
the twisting of the elbow area is what scares me. let alone if you go the tomahawk chop route you could really hyper extend your elbow. id like to try it, but then again i want a career lol....
@RayKinsella23 then again. if you can sort of tomahawk chop it like you are supposed to with a standard 3/4 curve, and keep your bicep flexed more at the end and let your arm come to your body instead of supinating and then so drastically naturally pronate, it may not be so dangerous. it may even come out like that 60 mph curve that livan hernandez throws that pisses off batters lol since it is being more of a flick rather than "push." just my insight, check out lincecum's red bull video
lol, the Dolphin ball, or "flipper". I could never throw a real big bender without doing just that, flicking it in there...and that made my accuracy shit, so I stuck with my slurve. Less tension on my arm, and just feels natural, I dont have to pronate violently, just the natural twist of my arm coming over the top provides the spin. And it allows for more consistency, instead of focusing on ponating or snapping the ball, I just aim at the hands, and spin it in nice and gently.
I couldn't concentrate on the pitch with all that Tommy John all over the place...christ, my arm just started stinging just watching this. If I ever threw this pitch it would be the last of my career.
1.) It's a tight curve, but i can throw it just as tight with more break
2.) throwing it like that, bringing your arm behind your head and having your elbow out in front of your arm is gonna really mess up your throwing arm...good luck with surgery mr. matzusaka
all of the comments here are pretty funny, this is actually better than throwing a slider. I wouldn't teach this to my students for the sole reason that I wouldn't want to waste a bunch of time teaching a pitch that is just about the same as an over hand curveball, or true curve ball. All you guys 13u throwing the slide piece, that is going to get you cut on before this pitch
this ball is often frowned upon by people that dont know it or havent tried it just because if you dont have someone to teach you it can be very stressful on your hands fingers and arms, but if you know the proper form its really effective and the curve is sensational. and i think its called the circle curve because when you put your hand on the ball to throw it you have a circle in your hand then throw it (you can see the circle in his hand when you watch the slo-mo form)
Thumbs up if you also tried to throw this pitch and ended up missing your Varsity year due to a torn muscle in your elbow. Anyone? No? Didnt think so :(
its probably safer for him to throw a curve this way than the traditional way given that it forces him to pronate so much, the only problem is that the batter will probably know when its coming
not to be another kid who says "im only 15 and I throw 100 mph" but I play outfield for my highschool team, when we warm up its always a big deal to have thhe team gather around me and watch me throw the pitch in the video. No one can hit it but eventually they figure out how to hit it, this pitch is good but you deffiently need more than this in your arsenal
@luverofemos What?! How the hell is that a sinker? A sinker looks like a fastball, but drops due to the 'natural' arm-action a pitcher has, not how he 'tips' the wrist.
well im 14 and i throw about 79 82 on a good day and i throw a screw ball only if i feel like i need a good pitch to get the batter but its hard as hell to control but when you do you feel like jesus haha but it hurts my arm and the coach only lets me like 12 times a tournament and i pitch about 140 pitches haha
@shag1234566 your 14 and throw a screwball? Sorry your not making it past high school. Your arm is destroyed. I am 14, and pitch in triple A, but even though I want to learn breaking balls, I am saving that until I am 16. And I recommend you do the same. For our age, stick with balls that don't stress your arm. My strike three pitches are Splitter, Fork ball, and knuckle ball. Im not trying to be a dick, but if your good, you want to keep doin good. Just helping you out.
@hcvideoproductions true thanks man i have been workin on like cutter and stuff like that and power curvs so i dont have to flick my wrist cause i went to tha doc and he told me if i keep it up my rotator cup is gonna go =( cause when i play out field tha coach wont let me use a cut off even if my arm hurts on a throw to home and if its to tha fence in screwed cause we play on 380 fields and i have to throw all tha way in 1 hope or less and its strains ya arm not throwin a rainbow and thanks man
@baseballguilliam2 tell me about it but now i got a doctors note sayin if i feel any strain on my arm i have to stop immedietly so i can let it heal ya kno
Wow, 10 pages of comments and only one person realized this is just a particularly violent screwball, not a curve. I guess most of these "baseball gururs" have never even seen a screwball motion before. Yeah it's hard on the arm, but some guys can get away with it.
Not effective at all. One, the batter knows everytime when the curve is going to be thrown. The dudes arm is gonna be fuc#$% in no time. God, that just looks like it hurts.
@Burnsengine try 5-6 times in my career. not only will your whole arm and wrist and elbow take the toll from throwing this pitch, if you threw it in a real game, it would be almost like yelling to the batter that you are throwing your "curveball". it totally tips your pitch and will either be hit hard, or they will take it for a ball low...
I know a guy who throws this in addition to a conventional curve. He only throws it maybe 3 times a game due to the elbow strain and the fact that it's very easy for the hitter to pick up after the shock value wears off
ive tried this... it seems easier on your arm than a regular curve or slider. And its got nasty break if done right. But i would recomend throwing it until your at least 17.
It's a pretty good, but not wise to throw this ball. You are going to tip your pitches, and the way you throw it, the batter will know you are going to throw a curveball
if anyone wants to throw a curveball like this, thats fine with me, there is just three words you need to know before you throw like this...tommy john surgery

I throw two types of curves this way: One breaks down and away and the other sweeps away. I've had elbow problems since 2005 and this puts less stress on my arm than a normal curve, and it breaks much more.
u dumbasses think bcuz u live in australia whereever this shit doesnt hurt you.not everyone gets it right the first try faggots. u could mess up.and break ur goddamn arm.

whats a wigger jw?
SimpleStuff31 2 years ago
a white guy who tries to be black. they usually want to be black. not racist or anything but its pretty much the words "white" and "nigger" in one word. their usually the people u see with their pants saggin and the muscle shirts and the hat tilted a little to the side because they think they look cool but they have no self awareness to how stupid they look.

That curve drops like Terahara's. That is a tough pitch to handle.
SoftBank47 2 years ago
I throw two types of curves this way: One breaks down and away and the other sweeps away. I've had elbow problems since 2005 and this puts less stress on my arm than a normal curve, and it breaks much more.

I tried this..and it hurts my arm..but the pitch works

he will not necessarily do ligament injuries. I am australian and this sort of wrist movement is utilised whilst bowling irregularly, but with great saffety and effect.
