  • This is a great song and a very nice presentation. I'd forgotten all about it until tonight when I was looking over the Top 100 list for 1960. This sure belongs on the list! Thanks for the upload.

  • This song was on the Juke box at my Grandmothers bar "Terry's" @ the port of lake charles, those sailors played the hell out of it, Thanx for posting it!

  • @ThePeterbiltrucker You are welcome.

  • Thank you for posting this sng. My grandmother was German and she owned this song on a 45rpm. I can't locate the record. What a great memory this provides me at Christmas. Jim

  • Thanks a lot for posting this song :)

  • @PositivFritid You are welcome.

  • fell in love with song years ago in turkey takes me back to happy times

sorry to learn of her deaf

  • I'm 27 and I first heard this song about 4 years ago on WQZS 93.3 out of Meyersdale, PA. For a long time I listened almost daily for them to play this song and a few others that no other stations ever play. It took me a few years before I actually found out who sang this song and what the name was. I get tired of most oldies stations playing the same songs over and over when there are so many other good songs like this that are never played.

  • heard this version on holiday in turkey loved it ever since

  • Beautiful music, reminds me of the song my dad would hum all the time, he was born in germany in 1907 came to America id 1927. I have traveled to Europe multiple times and always enjoy the visits to the homeland of my father, especially the music and food

  • Takk. Svein Aage Johnsen, Norway. Thank yoy, Lolita.

  • Wunderbar! A wonderful song and memory from my childhood. Thank you. Now...if you don't mind I will play it again!

  • @HickysBoy You are welcome.

  • My Daddy and I would always sing this song together (he was born in Germany) and he would always say it was a good lied! He's passed on now, but this song will always be very special to me!

  • @rcernuch Thanks for sharing your memories.

  • @wally1435

Thank you Wally. This is a beautiful song and I was sad to hear that Lolita passed away.

  • @rcernuch You are welcome.

  • Both my sets of grandparents were from Germany and used to listen to Lolita. I gained a greater appreciation of my German ancestry through her songs. Danke schoen fuer die schoene Lieder.'

  • @jeff62rey You are welcome.

  • For some reason I fell in love with this song when i was a boy of 13 in Detroit Michigan and bought it and played it for everyone for years. I still have it. She has a lovely voice! Thanks for sharing!!

  • @BrianEnright You're welcome.

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! THANKS so much for posting this utterly delightful & charming "blast from the past" for us to enjoy. I heard it played this morning on a local nostalgia radio station while driving around town. What a pretty tune...and Lolita had such a lovely voice. Since I don't speak German, I'm glad the song gives us some English lyrics too! You've MADE my day & my week...CHEERS, mate! :-)

  • @JubalCalif You are welcome.

  • This would play on the radio when I was very young .

  • I remember when I first heard this song, I thought it was so beautiful. Through the years I haven't changed my mind, I still think it is as beautiful as when I first heard it. And when I heard of her passing, the Sun didn't seen to be quite as bright as it was. R.I.P. Beautiful Lady

  • I was in first grade when this song was released. I always loved this song. There was a number of German and Italian songs released in the late '50s and early '60s and this was one of my favorites. She had such a pure, simple, beautiful voice.

  • I like this original version and sad to hear Lolita has died. I am more familiar with the Petula Clark reworded English version "Sailor" which became UK No 1 a little later in Feb 61 and she also reached No 2 in France with her French version "Marin" in June 61-both on YT

  • The news of her passing was much more painful than would have thought, probably because of my heratage, growing up with it was a constant reminder of the kin in the Braunfels area. When this song was a hit the relatives I grew up with saw it as an affirmation of the connection to relatives in Germany. Of course after the war we lost touch with all of them far as I know.

Very nice, long live this song, long live Lolita ...............rip,

    Regards,

  • Such a beautiful song, in any language. It reaches deep inside and touches emotions like no other song I have ever heard. I can listen to it over and over, and it never grows old. I love it.

  • I heard this recently and had to find it...I enjoy it as much in german as I do the english version....like all commenting I am saddened to hear of her passing and can only hope she didn't suffer but went peacefully

  • DANKE SCHON I HAVENT HEARD THIS SINCE I WAS A CHILD MANY THANKS LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • @vonedel You're welcome.

  • I am so saddened to hear of her passing. I remember when I first heard her hit song, Sailor-Sailor, to hear her singing it brightens my day... All our love for giving so much to the world, Edith..

  • i am sorry to hear she past away i just fond now the song and did no her nam was lolita but i like the song think's for youtub i fond it thank s for all of you.............

  • Being a rock and blues fan --- I love it and own the old single

  • I am sorry to hear of Lolita's passing.I have always liked this song. I remember my Mom thought I was crazy for buying a 45 record IN GERMAN. I have been considering recording this song myself, but not sure it would sound quite the same sung by a guy.

  • @terrisonb Actually, there was a very popular version of this song by German male singer Freddy (Quinn). Do a You Tube search for "Freddy Quinn - Seemann, deine Heimat ist das Meer ".

  • @wally1435 I am so sorry she died, this I think is the most beautiful song on earth, I am Brasilian and love this so much, and Lolita too, may she rest with all the angels.

  • brings back to many memories a great lady.

    Captain Rod.

  • Sorry to learn she has passed away. One of my favorite records from my teen years.

  • @Mstrblu You are welcome.

  • I was 18 in Duluth MN. waiting to ship out on one of the ore freighters in 1968 when I first heard this song.I played this song every time we got back to port..It always reminds me of returning home from the Great Lakes & the great memories.Thank You for posting.

  • What a beautiful melody, wish I could remember where I first heard this, but was so happy to come accross this once again in my life. I love it

  • Your welcom wally, i used to swing my Radio Compass to Nord Deutscher rundfunk

  • @BKPAGE Thanks for sharing your memories with us.

  • My Grandmother loved this song because it was in German! She passed away in October 2005. She taught me the German alphabet when I was a kid. I forgot it but I remember the song! :)

  • I just learned today that Petula Clark did an English version of this song in 1961. (It's on Youtube) She sang it beautifully, of course, but the English translation is so different from the original German lyrics. It actually left me feeling disappointed when I heard it. I'm 49. As for my own memories of this song, I recall my German-born father singing this with all his brothers and other relatives who were born in Germany. I first heard Lolita's version about 15 years ago on the radio.

  • Lolita.....I remember you from my childhood...RIP Lovely Lady

  • Originale sind immernoch die Besten.

  • It is with great sadness that we have lost a great singer. I ordered a couple of her records and listen to them a lot. She, in my opinion, is as good as Nana. I remember listenging to this song when I was in my teens.

  • I heard this many, many times on the radio late fall/early winter of 1960 as I was getting ready to board the bus to my school. I've always loved this song. What a great melody/words and singer. Thank You.

  • @patentpumps You are welcome.

  • A sad loss!! Rest in peace forever baby.

  • She passed away? I did not know that. I feel very sad about it. She could also be seen in German movies of the 50ies and 60ies.

I always loved this wonderful melody. It is so harmonic, so dreamy. It brought so much joy to the people after the cruel WW II. Her voice was unique.

  • Rest in peace, Lolita. God bless.

  • So schön......

und es stimmt mich auch traurig....

    Alles Gute Lolita!

  • sorry to her of her passing. she was a wonderful talent. I was a punk high school kid when this song came out way back when and we liked this song a a lot even tho it was so different from what w had on the AM radio. great song. my son lived in Germany for 7 years in the AIR Force and he translated all this to me one night as we drank beer on his patio in Ramstein area.

  • @larrydh2 Thanks for sharing those special memories. Her music will remain timeless and she's touched people all over the world with this song, no matter what language they speak.

  • Very sad to hear of her passing. Several years ago, through a friend in Germany,I was fortunate enough to receive a few autograpghed photos from her. I have liked this song since I first heard it in 1960. It is a beautiful song, and I think it has been loved and appreciated everywhere it was played.

  • @appletonpark Thanks for sharing this. Makes me realize I delayed too long in somehow contacting her, letting her know the special place this song has in my heart. Moved to the U..S., from Germany, at age 10, in 1957; at first it was

nice, then we moved to a very redneck area of the South & was constantly reminded of how different I was from others. Then heard this song one day on the radio & felt reconnected to my old homeland in ways I can't begin to describe & felt not so alone anymore!

  • @wally1435 You are quite welcome. It is interesting, we are the same age. Listening to this song again, just a few years ago, sparked my interest in learning to speak German. I made some progress, but living in a small town, with no one to speak German with, it was pretty difficult. But still I learned a little. The first words I learned were the translated words to this song. During the time I also discovered Lale Andersen, who had a beautiful voice, as in "Wo die Nordseewellen."

  • Heard this song for this first time a few days ago on Sirius Xm Cousin Brucie's show

good music has no boundries or borders and although I don't speak or understand the German language I sure do appreciate this womans beautiful voice and love this song. RIP Lolita

  • @ElxTacoxKid Glad you finally discovered this song.

  • Danke Lolita!!!

  • The world had just lost one of the greatest female singers ever lived. Rest in peace Lolita, in the arm of the Lord!

  • There was an Austrian showmaster who was looking forward to the twenty-fifth anniversary of his TV show in January 2006. A few weeks before that day, the Austrian television replaced him by another, hurting him bitterly and annoying the public. In his show next to the last, in November 2005, Lolita surprised the world with the announcement that she would retire from show business after this appearance. The great lady she always has been, she made a very gesture, expressing "let's go now".

  • this version (US) is the only one I have been able to find that has the E nglish translation in it. Do you know how I could get this original US. version. All Amazon has are the ones without the English.

  • My family came from Danzig, today it is called Gdansk...

  • My mother was from near the town that is now called Stargard Szcecinski, which is a few miles from the major city that was then called Stettin but today is called Szczecin. I was born & raised in and near Bavaria and never saw the sea while living in Germany, but now live right by the Pacific Ocean and see plenty of water...LOL

  • @gpgo My Oma was from Danzig also, by a little town called Putzig in West Prussia, Puck today in Polish. I got to see Danzig once, a beautiful City!

  • Wally1435 thank you for making this german girl very happy. My Oma sent this to my dad when I was little and I sung it like no tomorrow. It still makes me cry for some reason maybe because my German side of the family come from Hamburg and the sea is in our blood..Vielen Dank

  • You are very welcome. Thanks for sharing your memories with us.

  • Brings back alot of great memories, wish I was visiting Germany again soon!

  • Wally, are you the same Wally I think commented to about Al Martino a while ago, if so, beautiful, we have the same taste of music, more power !

  • Yes, I am the one. Thanks for commenting on this song, as well.

  • This is a very beautiful song, I remember it from the 60's. Did not know this lady lives around Salzburg, I have a sister Maria who was born in Salzburg , very beautiful little city.

  • Well done Wally. I can assure you that Sailors throughout the world, regardless of country, have a special feeling for all other sailors. This is a great song and makes me proud to have served in the United States Navy.

  • Thank you for your compliment and your comments in general.

  • For you Elsa, where ever you are....

  • Bueatiful, but truly a sad song, if your the one biting your time waiting it out/ It's alot different nowadays be you a farmer or a fisherman, I need not explain. Danke schoen.

  • You are welcome; thanks for the comments.

  • I am Irish German in this country, 2nd generation, love her singing...I wish they would let Germans sing in America...the American Entertaiment Industry should let foreign entertainment here too...

  • No one prevents foreign singers from singing in the U.S. There usually aren't enough people in an area to support a concert by someone in a foreign language, so unless that singer also sings in English, they can't be expected to be a major draw here. In the past, they occasionally have had German folk-music specials/festivals in places like Wisconsin, where there are strong pockets of German speaking peoples.

  • Good point...foreign singers need to know this, its like the Irish dancers, and some others, all that money sometimes taxed, sometimes not, goes back to there country...like England, performers from foreign countries, will demand to be paid in Euro's which is about twice the amount of American Dollars,...let me know what you think about this picture...

  • Einfach nur gut. Sag ich als Seemann

  • Danke für die kommentar.

  • ciska peters - zeeman is the dutch version

  • Thank for that update.

  • thanks for posting it wally. when i was a little boy i would stay weekends with my grandad and grandma they had an old tube radiogram i think called a skyscraper and this song would always play on the sunday afternoon request show It brings back fabulous memories for me. God bless

  • Thanks for your comments; appreciated.

  • @12345plg Thanks for your comments; they are appreciated.

  • Thanks for posting this song. wow. It brings back so many memories. I was a junior in high school and had my first true love when this was popular. I have listened to oldie stations on the radio forever hoping to hear it for many many years and never hear it. I haven't heard it for 40 years but always remembered to phrase, sailor sailor your home is the sea. Tonight I thought I would try to google sailor sailor and there it was. Thanks again.

  • Great Song Wally but there a some mistakes in the lyrics of the song. Maybe you can correct them.

  • I simply copied and pasted the lyrics I found on the Internet - if you have a more correct version, then please submit a link where you can find the correct lyrics. It would be the courteous thing to do, rather than to simply say that there are some mistakes and assume that I would read and speak perfect German (which I don't - I know just the basic rudimentaries of it)Thank you.

  • So im german so I know whats wrong Here we go.

    Lido=Rio, traumen= traeumen. Leibe=Liebe, Lieben=Leben, Sinsucht=Sehnsucht

Ein Lieben lauf =Ein Leben lang

  • Thank you for your help. I should have been paying attention in the beginning, because even I knew it should have been "Rio" instead of "Lido".

  • Thank you for posting this. When this song was popular I was working in boat yards and crewing on anything afloat that would give me a berth.

  • You're welcome; thanks for your comments.

  • Thank you very much for posting this.

  • You are very welcome.

  • thanks Wally . feel free to contact me with any song anytime. i respect someone who is civil decent and knows great music. as for these CREEPS who abuse YOUTUBE with their fILTH , the law will catch up to them soon enough if they overplay their hand. its sad i have to say this .its my last time unless they continue harrassing me. God Bless and long live LOLITA. My german people and i loved this song in 60 and i love it still in 2009. TOMK the doo wop rocknroll historian.

  • Wally thanks again. sadly im getting HATEFUL emails sent me posted from people who condemn my high praise of this & other sings. Im getting FILTHY LANGUAGE thrown at me, insulting because i say God Bless or Thank God. Im dealing with a few weirdos out there. i will pray for them. LOLITA remains a classic here and for always. its a haunting mrmory from 1960 forever eteched in my head. Thanks Wally. Take care . Your a kind gentle person. we need more like you. TOMK

  • Don't let it get to you; I've gotten my share of it (I have 600 songs up on You Tube). I find the "Block User" button very useful...lol and I also remove more comments than you can shake a stick at. Some people are just hateful and feel powerful when they think they are anomynous and can attack others at random - feel very sorry for them, I think they must be very powerless in real life and act tough on the message boards only.

  • Great to find this long lost song. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

  • Thanks for the nice comment.

  • Wally im new to YOUTUBE .Thanks for your e mail. I see youre saying thanks to others who comments. Do you have a connection with this great song SAILOR or are you just commenting like the rest of us die hard old time rocknroll fans and historians? I loved this song in 1960.
