I love watching these old episodes, just inserting to see the beginnings of future plots, like Ed and Crystal. As well as thinking over the words Roseanne dad says when talking bout divorce. "Married 38 yrs" ... but cheated how many years>?
It's hard to believe this relatively charming guy is the same one who used to beat them with a belt. I also don't think they could have known he would be written that way in later seasons. Trust me, if you grew up with someone that abusive, at the very least your relationship would be quite icy, if not worse.
@smartypantsnyc That's not necessarily true. My grandfather was abusive but my mom got along with him well enough. I think mothers do things like that so their children will get along with their grandparents rather than seeing them as monsters.
Its kinda confusing the writers must have buggered up something or ive lost something, but i swear in one episode they say they loved there dad more then the mum got along better with the dad etc. Then when the dad dies they come out and say he used to beat them?? I dont get it
@rani1223 But it makes you scared of them.. coming from that i should know..Sometimes this show is a little unrealistic in that sense..You still love them yes but your still scared and lose respect for them!!!
@LittleMissJmoo in the beginning, their father was just kind of annoying but later it was revealed he was an abusive cheater. they just rewrote his character for the drama. you need antagonists even in a comedy.
As for Bev and Roseanne's relationship. I believe Roseanne grew more of a backbone when Bev moved back to Lanford. The episode in where she announces she's moving, Roseanne kind of finally stands up to her for the first time (she wants to give Jackie and Roseanne money that she got from her divorce).
After that, it seemed easier for Roseanne to not back down and wither like Jackie suggests in this episode. In my opinion, fairly consistent.
It was established fairly early on that Roseanne had a closer relationship with her mother than she did with her father. Even in the next Thanksgiving episode, when it's revealed he had an affair, she's not totally withdrawn and full of hate toward him. It was after that, I think, that she began to see her father for what he was.
Jackie, on the other hand, seemed to be far closer to her dad. Which is similar to this episode and then subsequent ones (when they go to KC to see his mistress).
This episode illustrates the real insecurities and family issues that really happen in reality, outside of Hollywood. Many families fake the whole thing, truth is nowhere to be found on Thanksgiving, or Xmas, etc., most families are VERY uncomfortable with each other.
Did anybody notice how Al says he'll be married for 38 years in May? Later in this season, Roseanne celebrates her 37th birthday in May. So, according to those dates, Al and Bev got married exactly a year before Roseanne was born, which would mean Bev got preggers with Roseanne 3 months into their marriage. The problem is, in a later episode, Nana Mary reveals that Al only married Bev because she was ALREADY pregnant with Roseanne. Tthere are ALOT of little errors like that. O well, still <3 it!
I have a mom who is similar. In a shadier way. A little more tolerable but it boils down to the same thing. She's not satisfied with my life. ;-) (Like anyone in my family is doing anything amazing.)
it may have been a later plot thing but i think its quite realistic, even if ur parent is a monster its all u know and unless u disown em u just try and get along, its easier dat way. she didnt seem 2 face up to it til he died.
Later in the series, like after he dies, Roseanne is always talking about what a monster her dad was growing up. Seems like that was a later plot development.
I hate how they changed his storyline up. You can tell here and the last season that Roseanne loved her dad, but they changed it so he beat them and she hated him. And they also changed Roseanne being a wimp in front of Bev, and then in the later seasons, she was totally not a wimp.
it was on hes cheek and he calls her honey again when she asks the guys for drinks....by they way who would want to drink vodka on the rocks thats drinking rubbing alcholol with ice nasty
Darn! Where's part one? That's got my fav scene in it. Becky answers the phone and as soon as Dan finds out it's Bev, he gets this really disgusted look on his face. When Roseanne holds the receiver towards him, he does this hissing thing and flies out the door. LOL!!!
It does actually make sense. Some crazy people go years without a breakdown. My aunt is bipolar but she didn't have a nervous breakdown until two years ago. And that was almost 20 years after her first one.
ok who are the man and wife Ive never seen them before??

@ifuseekamy Haha in later episodes then use Debbie Reynolds as Dan's Mom. She's better aged. and Hilarious.
