. PROBABLE CAUSE: "The pilot's improper decision to plan a flight to a runway of insufficient length, his improper in-flight decision to land on that inadequate runway with a tailwind, and his failure to obtain the proper touchdown point. A factor in the accident was the tailwind condition."
i think the airplane went in survival mode after unloading its passengers, just like the plane revs upp the engiens and heds towards the shore, Shame it doesnt make it!
This is what happens when you get these pilots whose only training was graduating from Acme Flight School.... The guy didn't even shut the engine down... They have checklists for these things... Definitely never served in the military...
Dude, He was landing like 15kt with gusts of un at tail downwind. I doubt that he could have slowed down egnouph without stalling to prevent that drama. The only way I could see is if he landed within' the threshold of the runway. Which as im sure you know could be just as dangerious as what he did. It was good to see all the people made it out safely.
PROBABLE CAUSE: "The pilot's improper decision to plan a flight to a runway of insufficient length, his improper in-flight decision to land on that inadequate runway with a tailwind, and his failure to obtain the proper touchdown point. A factor in the accident was the tailwind condition."
Th weather was pretty bad for landing that plane.. Maybe better weather could save he plane. But pilots great job saved passengers lives..
When the engine started again at full throttle I thought the engine blow up with all the people in boat.. Heat from engine and cold water in it could made a dangerous combination!
no, a short cicut will make a short burst of a lot of power, not enough to make it go for that long. con't you see they turned it around, not something you can do with a small boat. but you can pull it with a small boat.
So the shutdown might explode the engines. Then the piolts job is to open the hatch for the passengers to get out, which he did correctly. Then they were saved. The autopilot plus nav are still on. the planes engines give full power to get back to a airspeed of around 200 knotes, but beacsue the oe engine already failed, only one went crazy. Lucky for everyone around, beacuse with two engines it will have crashed at a higher speed into the grass or houses
it was a cessna citation jet 3. That has as a standard a full flight management system. On such bad days, you let the nav approach and almost set down. I think then for some appaerent reason there was panik and the pilots did eveything, trying to get the plane on the ground. When they saw they had to go around, they left the nav on, because t does the perfect turn and puts you bak infront of the runway. Then, they dropped into the water, where tey had put engines on idle. (shutdown might explde)
That's absolutely bizarre. I'd love to hear from a qualified pilot as to how this could have happened. How could that engine have gone from idle (or stopped) to full thrust? Water causing a short in electrical system? Something forced against throttle control cables from water coming in? Amazingly, both engines appear to be salvageable...and at over $100K each, that might make the pilot feel just a little less stupid.
To think this person was licensed by our FAA for his judgement to make "proper" decisions when confronted with challenging circumstances... ah... "What direction was the wind blowing!?!" "Ah, maybe if I gun the engines no one will here me as I SAIL to the shoreline and taxi back to the hanger!" I would love to read his 'version' of the report he/she submitted to the NTSB! Is enough listed here to concur every comment before me? I don't know... maybe it's just me!
5/15/2005 was the date of the accident report. The pilot was a 61 year old private pilot who had an airport diagram for that airport attached to the yoke with indicated the jets were prohibited to land there.
The airport is KAIY Atlantic City Municipal Airport.

My guess is the water shorted the circuits, that would make a great washing machine.
kinsley2108 4 years ago
The pilot probably left the throttles on full when he left the plane to attempt a go round, once the starter circuits were shorted, it was useless.
