I am in love with this performance! Love the band sound, Tori's obviously plugged into it, too. The whole performance was bursting to seams with verve and passion. Can't get better than that, especially for a musician who has been performing as long as Tori has.
I can't get this song out of my head! I love all her albums, even if in all albums I only like 1-6 songs. I still believe she's one of the best musicians in the world! ♥
The same thing happens to both Tori and Björk: people are not listening to the recent works with the view of production, but comparing them to the albums they like more.
I love Welcome To England, I love AATS and I just dislike her actual plastic face.
Hmm. Maybe it would would be better if it was only her voice and the piano. Like in the old days when she actually made albums I did listen to (I still listen to these old albums).
In my mind, I think that From the Choirgirl Hotel was Tori's last best album, with Scarlet's Walk being her last album. The rest I just dismiss (I'd prefer to think of Tori as how she was pre-Beekeeper). However, Tori at her worst is still lightyears ahead of any other contemporary artist at their best, and I'd still kill to see her live.
@sickofwaitingtables I agree with beekeeper being HORRIBLE, but you didn't like American Doll Posse? That cd and tour rocked hard! You should give it another chance. Her current cd is just okay...and the tour was kinda boring (compared to Am. Doll Posse).
I think the problem people are having with Tori's newer albums is that she has EVOLVED beyond us. Her first albums were instantly relatable- almost felt like she was writing/singing about my life (and I think alot of people felt the same). I ultimately feel similarly about the newer albums- but it just takes longer to get there. It's like the songs have to marinate or something; like my consciousness must expand to understand/except them.
@sarinola And I would like to add that I think she is one of the most important performers/ writers/ sages/ shamans (dare I say prophets?) of our time, and therefore it is so important that we try to keep up with her. Her work is important because it deals with the TRUTH.
... as there's no obligation for Tori Amos to keep rewriting the same songs all over again. Sorry, I'll defend my point of view to the last drop of my blood. and last but not least, she is NOT a contemporary singer who sings dull songs for publicity. On that note, I end my participation in this discussion.
What kinf of argumentation is that??? "don't listen to her, simply" -.- I like her but i'm not that kind of fan that are blind to what she become... American Doll Posse and Abnormally Attracted to Sin are not good CDs! Yes, a few songs of both are beautiful but...nothing compares to previous albums. Listen to Cindy Lauper voice and now you will tell me if someone could not keep the voice clean for more than 20 years.
I've made my point clear. And don't quite get "to what she become" part. American Doll Posse and Abnormally Attracted to Sin are as outstanding as the previous albums. And "don't listen to her, simply" was not an argumentation, but an advice. That's what I think and everyone is free to have their own point of view. I'm just slightly annoyed by those who keep moaning, as there's no obligation to listen to what they're not keen on.
yes, she has changed, but that's good, as she would be BORING if she played the same music throughout her career.
there's nothing wrong about her music or songs, Tori is still awesome & one of a kind
and finally, do you really imagine fhat a singer who's been performing LIVE for over 20 years would have her voice unaffected? I think NO. I don't imagine she could use playback. Live singing makes Tori REAL and GENUINE. IT'S LIKE THAT!
I have to disagree with you. I don't think that Tori, as she was in the 1991-1996 era, could ever bore me. Honestly, I cannot tell you how many times I've played Forgotten Earthquakes. And those are her B-sides! I can never get "bored" of Under the Pink. There's always something new to discover hidden in the texture of her songs. I've listened to her piano suite "All the Girls Hate Her / Over It" at least a hundred times. How I wish she would produce music like that again.
I've never said Tori could become boring for audience who appreciate her work.
I said that an artist who sticks to the same style and themes through their carreer is criticized for repeating the same thing all over again. And yet, someone who doesn't - like Myra Ellen is being criticized for drifitng away from the core of her early music, which was pain, wrongness, hatred and rage. All of her albums are wonderful, she's a wise person and she knows what she's doing.
I've watched numerous interviews eith her, both early and contemporary, and in my personal subjective view, from what I heard in them, she does the very right thing in her post- Scarlet's Walk work, as she said in one of them "now there is a broader spectrum in the work, and there are more colours than there were then". I totally agree, there's no need for her to carry on with the her early subjects in her contemporary music.
In my opinion, after having listening to her albums thousands of times one by one, I can say that her recent work, maybe despite not being so raw and full of rage anymore, is still full of wisdom and universal truths, when I listen to "The Beekeeper", her the only positively radiant album from the first sing to the last, I can see it, even though it took me a good amount of time to understand what she sings about there.
I was referring to not subject matter, but style. I have no problem with her current lyrics or artistic intent as a songwriter; it's the over-produced instrumental accompaniment, drowning out her piano, that really irks me and tends to give me a headache. I believe Tori is at her best when it's just her and the Bösendorfer ("Sister Janet", "Black Swan", "Mother"). Not to mention her voice isn't what it used to be, the way she seems to have forgotten proper pronunciation.
Noone's voice would stay nice and clear after 20 years of touring the world with passionate concerts, vocal cords wear out, that's for sure ;-) Thank god Tori's only a human! ;-))))
Watch her latest interviews, Tori's pronunciation is proper as it can be. She's always altered it in her songs.
However to be honest, the amount of electronic music on AATS struck me at first hearing, and I disliked the album... I disliked all of her albums at first hearing, lol.
Progessively, her voice has gotten more nasal-sounding, and if truth be told, I blame her countless plastic surgeries (it's obvious she's had some rhinoplasty). She hasn't always had unintelligible pronunciation; just compare her recent performances of old songs with the older performances of them. Oh well. I still cherish her first four albums dearly, and Tori will always be my favorite artist.
I am so tired of people complaining about the changes Tori has gone through, too.... IT is about her MUSIC, and her passion, everything she does is timeless, but she is HUMAN! And like the rest of us has gone through phases and grown! I am glad she is not trying to sing the same damn song over and over again, and she has always walked a line between mainstream and 'indie'.... that is nothing new. She is in her own little Tori-verse! And why don't people like the Beekeeper!? It is a great album!!
hehe, I truly agree :-) Would Tori be Tori if she has recorded "Little Earthquakes" or "Boys For Pele" all over again? NO. But sadly, most people expect their idols to do the same things repeatedly, under different titles, which is DULL and BORING. That's how pop stars act. The most fabulous about Tori Amos is that her albums are distinctive than one another. I love "The Beekeeper" (and all other too). And can't wait for "Midwinter Graces" :DD
I've loved this woman's music for about the last 15 years but suddenly she looks like she's trying too hard... and it kills me to say that! The music is still awesome, so is she but 'the look' is not working. She looks botoxed???
and I'm wondering how a real fan cannot notice that their idol grows old as evryone else. Tori will turn 50 in 3 years, and she's got over 20 years behind her of giving live, passionate performances all over the world. Now, how that can affect the appearance? Does it really matter in the end? To me not. Not if it comes to Tori Amos.
In my humble opinion, Tori has NOT "gone mainstream" contrary to what some suggest here. And I really don't understand these who keep moaning "Oh god, howI miss old Tori!!!". Pseudo artists who play the same music and keep the same style throughout their career are BORING. So quit the crap. Tori is genious and genious minds need no telling them how to perform or act. Abnormally Attracted To Sin is a brilliant album as well as all Tori's works. (yeah including The Beekeeper - I love it too :))
she's just sooooooo abnormally incredible !!!! what a goddess of song

They should build a better keyboard for her, so that she doesn't have to use two and reach so far.

And one more remark to those who keep moaning about today's Tori Amos:
if you're not keen on her current style, DO NOT listen to her, simply.
That will save you from strife and youtube from being spammed by "blahblahblah OH GOD!!! How I miss old Tori!!! :'((" crap.

Bla bla bla. People come on, this performance is NOT good for an artist like Tori Amos.
She lost a little bit of her awesome voice. She changed and her music is not so good as 90's. IT'S LIKE THAT!

I´m not that happy about the music, either.
But she is still writing the songs herself.
I hope that she, if she make´s a new album, find her old style again.
