I love how this movie is very different in it's style from the original two. It has been tinkered with and manipulated to the point where it is an almost alien experience about the world around us. It will be a very long time before we see films of this caliber come around again and if we do I'm sure they won't capture the same magic as the qatsi series has.
A very much under appreciated film but the perfect ending to a brilliant series.
I haven't seen the whole movie, but from this clip, I think the use of visual effects actually detracted from it. Koyaanisqatsi was especially powerful because it used straight footage.
Nice footage of Perfect Dark, though. For all its violence, it sure is a fun game.
Awseome soundtrack by Phillip Glass. Some movies hinge on the power of their soundtracks: Apocalypse Now, Hellraiser Trilogy, and the 'Quatsi Trilogy are a few examples.
Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi & Nagoyqatsi make up the trilogy. The first of the 3, Koyaanisqatsi, ( a way of living that calls for another way of life ) made such an impact on me I hunted it down for years as for some reason it was out of print so to speak and finally managed to buy all six VHS copies available to me at the time when I did find it. I can't recommend it enough. For some reason it came to mind again tonight and now the other two are to be hunted down. Very thought provoking stuff.
it seems as if 99% of the humans on earth are denizens of satan rather than sons of god. the vast majority of the people on earth just fight for the stupidest reasons, and sometimes for no reason.
@manimgoindowndown Humanity is so violent, I've found myself in tears at times because of its horrendous nature of murder, destruction and oppression.
Reggio has captured the truth of ultimate human accomplishment and ultimate human ignorance at the same time. I would encourage you to rent and see the extra anaysis (interview) of his works on the end of the DVD Koyaanisqatsi.

wow this deeply moved me, i have only seen the first film and was amazed, I dont know what the answer is to prevent our self destrution, but personaly these movies are so true and telling of us that they make me want to go live in a tribe of indigenous peoples
koyaanisqatsi powaqatsi naqoyqatsi.. and the last one... can't remember the name.. these movies shows how stupid the human is.. i love these... more than all.. powaqatsi and naqoyqatsi...
i think it rather shows how bad modernisation/technology/development is. we don't know what our purpose is anymore, we don't have any feelings and we have no idea how the pureness of life and nature feels. this is different to the few primitive cultures left, who respect the enviroment and have purpose in life. we think we're smarter and we think we improve ourselves with technology, but they do more harm then we think and it's all a substitute purpose.
I finally had the chance to watch the entire film. This is my favourite part but by the time I got to it I found I was too exhausted from the movie to truly enjoy it. Maybe the movie was way too out of my league. Or maybe this clip is more intense isolated. Excellent music.
We record our deeds on tape, on film in computers and in log books.
We may encrypt, lock or otherwise shield them so that others are not able to quickly access them.
Nevertheless, we must save & savor the pain of our fellow man & woman for what end?
We don't want their names. We don't want their history. We don't ask who are their wives, husbands, sons, daughters, mothers & fathers. We don't want to lay flowers at their headstones.
I *enjoy* the Reggio & Glass productions, but to what end?
I love all three of these films. I think Reggio et al made a powerful case for change with the "Qatsi" series because they just showed things as they are...a thoughtful viewer looks at the screen and says "geez, are we really like that?" Point Blank may be the most important part of Naqoyqatsi in that sense.
Absolutely agree with you there, it is the best critique of us as species as it will get, now what is the conclusion to this? Is there answers? Are we going to change..or are we still destined for the downward spiral of destruction and inherit wrongness. To quote Albert Einstein
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."
The one thing about this last film that confuses me is the false color. They really went to a lot of trouble to rework the video, and I have to assume there was more than a merely aesthetic purpose. Maybe the reason for that was to get us to look at the images more carefully. Any ideas?
Maybe it's a comment on the digital, maybe it's a literal "in the face" demonstration that all images you see in film and television are false and are easily manipulated and can be at any time, maybe the colours are visual representation of life in false colours, like everything and everyone is false/an illusion? Hmm quite hard to explain what I mean.
You do realise when people make films, they have conceptual ideas, research, scripts, storyboards which have meaning the director didn't just do thing's for the sake of it and the beauty of the trilogy is that we are supposed to look into what we think it means so you are wrong.
yes there is meaning in the trilogy, no one is debating that. What I was referring to, if you read the comments, was whether there was a metaphor present for the "false color" shots in some of the movie. And when you tried to claim that the falso color is "a metaphor for emotion" I obviously had to ridicule your sophomoric input. Leave the creativity to the creative people and you can substitute your own meaning for them all you want.
Man your so hostile, I was asking you originally what you meant by "its an analogy for the false color that resides in us all" so I was asking you what you meant not making any statements, you should calm down a bit and stop looking for arguments where there are none, I was actually willing to agree with you and was simply asking you to elaborate on your point.
there no hostility here whatsoever, mostly sarcasm with a pinch of apathy. I was just making fun of you because you sounded like one of those snooty art people who are always looking into the smallest detail and trying to find some hidden metaphor for life, its like ITS JUST A PAINTING. So maybe you are the one who should be taking things alittle less seriously?
I'm a film maker, I made the point that every frame of a film is meticulously edited and watched by many production staff, the director himself has stated the meaning of each frame, it is a very unique set of films I didn't make any comment at all, like I said I was asking what you mean by false colours! If I was to do an analysis I would talk about them as a trilogy.
I simply meant to make fun of people who look too deeply into superficial artifacts. I was obviously being facetious. So when I said "its an analogy for the false color that resides in us all" it was a satire, not meaning to be taken seriously by anyone. But than again this is youtube where people can not detect sarcasm or humor I guess...
When you write something in sarcasm it becomes subject to interpretation. And when there's neither emote nor a previous recollection of the author to go by, I don't think the crowd is what matters as to whether you'll be misread or not. The only sarcasm which is relatively assured to be understood is that which is grounded in absolute absurdities, and it's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of pure logic.
you are So right, how could I have ever misunderstood THAT!
p.s. I just disproved your point.
maybe you want to think twice the next time you find yourself authoring hasty generalizations... otherwise you just make yourself look like one of dem non-intylekshul types.
The only thing sophomoric about this entire argument is your idea that reading something further into an expression is necessarily absurd. As the movie in part depicts how we are impressed and appalled by the same things, your false color analogy certainly could have been interpreted as reasonable whether it was your or the filmmakers intention or not.
Thanks for taking the time to point this out to me. I will thoroughly digest your opinion and take it into account the next time I have the idea that "reading something further into an expression is necessarily absurd". Your work is done here, now off you go, I believe I saw someone type something off-color in one of the featured videos. OFF OFF AND AWAY HUMORLESS YOUTUBE DEBATER!
If I was humorless I wouldn't be laughing at the comment you just made. But I guess where my humor flew out the window in the argument below was when you wrote that you just had to ridicule someones sophomoric input. Maybe I read hastily (not taking this all that serious) but it didn't instantly ring with leprechauns to me.

i agree, i think introducing a perspective from "within technology" was too much for some people to get. To me the last movie ties the series together, going from critiquing our dependence on technology with Koyaanisqatis, showing the masses we trod on to support our neo-aristocratic lives in Powaqqatsi, and then our own idolization of celebrity and fascination of science (among other things) with Naqoyqatsi
