@bimmermann18 if you want a cheap but massive upgrade from logitech z5500's (providing you have the floorspace) get a SONY STRDH500 from richer sounds £120, a pair of wharfedale valdus 500's as mains of ebay second hand (£50-100) and a pair of wharfedale 9.0's from richer sounds as rears £50 and a cheap 2nd hand centre channel from ebay (preferably wharfedale to "tone match") but it doesnt really matter too much (£20) the valdus centre was a what hifi 5# winner but its rare now. Total £220-270
@bimmermann18 with this setup you will not have a subwoofer but you will have six...yes 6 eight inch drivers which is roughly equiverlant to 3-4 logitech z5500 subwoofers
@iloveaxxo I ended up building all of my speaker cabinets for a 7.2 configuration with fostex drivers and pair of dayton audio 8" reference subwoofers. I figured to wait and save up a bit more so I was able to customize my build.
@iloveaxxo If you build it to their enclosure recommendation, a subwoofer is almost not needed. I had it tested down to 50Hz from 4" drivers. Well worth the money out of a small driver.
n the heart of the Midlands, Russell rolls up for a blissful stay at Charlotte and Chriss 19th-century town house. The couple love staying in boutique hotels, but after the arrival of their first baby they decided to recreate the hotel experience at home. Russell is knocked out by Charlottes bold use of colour and light-reflecting materials.
Will artistic expression, family fun or indulgent pampering swing the vote?
Michael heads off to an arts-and-crafts mansion in the Norfolk countryside. Built in 1905, the house has a chequered history including a period of requisition by the army and a spell as a nursing home. It is now owned by antiques expert Simon and his teenage son, Jack. Designed around a butterfly imprint, the house has an astounding 14 bedrooms and seven bathrooms.
Elsewhere, Melissa arrives at Ally and Garys Georgian farm house in Lincolnshire. When the couple bought the property in 2003 it was in a dilapidated state, but they realised it was the perfect home for their five children Its been an amazing process.Weve learned a lot about each other says Gary. The pair were keen to blend period style with 21st-century comfort. Ally stuck to a Georgian colour scheme of blues, greys and deep reds, while use of mirrors cleverly creates the illusion of space.
Howley sh*t your room is Movie-Watching Heaven-On-Earth. Great room man. I'm thinking of buying the z-5500, is it good for movies, in other words, does the bass make your whole room shake with explosions :P etc?
one thing you might want to try is add some weight to the very bottom of the screen end.
lotta times for projector screens' they have a metal bar, that is wrapped in a little bit of the screen fabric (Screen it self) and then sew the end of the fabric shut so the metal bar does not come out.
the reason for the weight is to keep the tension tight, so the screen does not curl up and on the sides as it is currently doing..
there is curently a wooden stick in it but i can use a iron one ore so, but the main raise nwhy the rinquels are is because the rol up drum isn't round but 6 sided ....
Yeah these things make excellent monitor replacements - but you'll get better performance if you give it it's own wall and crop off a section for its image. You can buy matting paint for the section so it handles the light properly.
Your screen sucks and your lighting

Great setup. I am fixing up my basement to put together a home theater system. Do the Z-5500 work pretty well?
bimmermann18 2 years ago
they work great, but i think for pure home theater there are better things around ....
