My mum was called Violet and she adored this song..and David Whitfield, she saw him many times. This brings back wonderful memories of my mum and my childhood. Thankyou for posting this.......with tears in my eyes xxx
I think David was one of the most under-rated singers ever. Such a powerful voice. His version of "Violetta" compares very favourably with the version of Josef Locke who made it his signature tune. A true legend, sadly missed.
I have photos I took backstage at Coventry Theatre when David sang this. He was in a gondolier costume. I love the song as it always reminds me of those days when he would always fill the theatre.
Oh how I love this song........very nostalgic....one of my favorites when I was little....still remember its lyrics...........now it has been treasured deep in my heart.......
Saw David in Plymouth in 1954. He had sung his repetriore and had finished singing. He said as there is no more music I cannot sing anything else. A voice yelled out "I Believe". He sang "I Believe" without a Mike and the usual Orchestra. I will remember it till the day I die. What a Voice Voice he had. God Bless you David Whitfield you were the best and have not been equaled by any Tenor singing Popular songs & semi Opra in the UK in the last 30 years.
I agree, No one could ever hold a candle to him, to hear him sing without a mike, what a privilege., which I have shared. The best singer ever, he didn t need a mike, an orchestra or a backing group, or any special effects. Just him and his voice. Also a great personalty, great looks, a true star., and friendliness and time for his fans. We walked with him, shared a drink, played darts, a joke and a laugh. Never to be forgotten, our David. Sadly he died 30 years ago next Friday we mourn him.
there will never be anyone that can take david's place. i saw him in 1974, he sang CARA MIA without a mic., and you could hear a pin drop.!! There is no singer today that could hold a candle to him!
Gosh... This brings back the memory of when I was 3yrs old. My father got a radiogram and one record. I lifted the record holding arm so it played over and over again untill everyone was sick of hearing it...... Better days.
Yes, if only he was still alive. Its wonderful that he is so popular on you tube, he would be thrilled, to know that he isnt forgotten and we still love his voice, and him.
Fantastic voice.

Not only with Josef Lock's. Please check Janusz Poplawski "Tango Violetta". Greetings from Poland
