can we in the u.s. buy the over the counter imitrex from the u.k.? what i mean is, is it legal, would i have to worry about the d.e.a swarming down on me?
I totally agree .... I thank god I have insurance $15 for 4 if I didn't I would have to live with the pain . The last migraine I had before I went to the Dr I was down for 2 days and lost 8 pounds . Maybe the drug lords should suffer from migraine and we should charge them 200,000 a pill because that's how it feels for us regular people
I have a friend who has severe migraines and she has had more than just an inconvenience in obtaining her medication. Because she could not get health insurance she has actually had to go without her immitrex and even the generic at times because she literally did not have the money to buy it. I think there should be a limit to the amount of profit these companies are allowed to make at patients' expense. Nobody should have to be SOL because of corporate greed.
Thank you for posting this! It's nice to know you have wisdom about this subject and are sharing it. Knowledge is power. My migraine auras can sometimes be a bright shining curtain of vibrating colors. One time I was in a supermarket and an aura hit me. I knew I had to get out of the store. I was so blinded by the aura, that I walked straight into a display. So glad someone else was with me to drive home! I wish they would invent a good med that could be taken daily as a permanent preventativ
My mother needs this drug. She does not have insurance. My cousin works as a pharmaceutical rep and traded his Corvette for a Viper at 25. It makes me sick.
I now use Maxalt-mlt 10 mg it works great for my migranes, and also there are patient assitance programs out there for a couple you got make 58,000 or less for low cost or free medicine
i noticed that @northerncomfort suggested cannabis as a remedy for migraines in a comment posted about a year ago, but i never saw a response. does thc help or not?
Medi-Cal only covers nine pills a month for me. I have migraines pretty much on a weekly basis. Luckily they are usually pretty mild, but but usually lst for a couple days. Occasionally I will just get one that royally kicks my ass.
With my insurance I pay $20 for 9 pills for sumatriptan. The injections cost $60 for 2 shots with insurance which I only use for the once a month killer migraines. If you don't have insurance you can order it online oversea's without a prescriptions for about $25 for 9 pills. The shots are about $55 for two.
To answer your question, because the UK, unlike the US, at least tries to make sure its residents are free, even if it IS a government and often fails. As a result, they assume companies are evil organisations that are out to screw everyone and everything until proven otherwise, and more or less keep them under control. In the US, companies have rights and people don't. The only way around this is organised extraordinary regime change. I hope this answers your question
Glaxo didn't cause my migraine. For years, people suffered with no good option. Then companies like glaxo said, "hey, I invented a pill. I'll make your migraine stop for $15"
As anyone who has migraines would, I said, "Yes, please! Deal!"
that's not extortion. That's the market.
If you want to reform health care, I'm right there with you. But right now, all glaxo did was play by the rules and fix my headache. Don't like? I guess you can still go back to drilling a hole in your head...
"Glaxo has you by the balls if you have migraines"
Glaxo doesn't have me by the balls. Glaxo didn't cause my migraine. Glaxo (and generics) said, "hey, I'll make your migraine stop for $15," to which I replied, "Wow, ok. That's worth it to me. I'd like to engage in this exchange."
That's not extortion; it's the market. You'd have a great case here if Glaxo had anything to do with causing my migraines. They don't. All they did was offer to fix them, for a price. Take it or leave it.
Slowly working my way through your old videos, ZJ. You might be interested in the source of some migraine-blocking drugs: a herb named Gelsemium sempervirens. It is very potent, so you have to be careful to use only a tiny amount. Large doses can kill. I used to buy it in tablet form from pharmacies here in Australia as Gelsemium extract. Growing the herb would cost your Mum nothing. My mum and I have migraines too and often Gelsemium was the only thing that worked.
(cont...) I notice there is a lot of homeopathic crap online about Gelsemium. What my Mum and I took was not homeopathic.
There was a time window in which it would be effective. Taken during the "aura" stage it prevented the migraine developing further to the pain stage. Taken later, during pain, it did little or nothing.
Gelsemium sempervirens is native to North America.
i experience migraines aswell and it to is a prescription in australia for sumatriptan but because I work at a pharmacy i get discount so it only costs 13$ for 4 tablets :)
ok so imitrex is a drug to help stop an oncoming migraine if your mother is taking it everyday with out any other medication for migraine then some of the migraines she's getting are a result of rebound migraine. imitrex is a drug that is to meant to be taken everyday. thats like taking ibuprofen everyday because you know you get headaches an/or migraines. you take the drug when you feel the migraine coming on.
It takes a while for prices to come down when a drug goes generic. Generic sumatriptan price is no longer anywhere near 8 pills for $200. Your video is out of date.
In UK, Sumatriptan is POM ( Prescription only medicines) but 50 mg tablets can be sold to the public to treat previously diagnosed migraine; Net price 6 - tab pack = £ 1.94; 100 mg 6 tablet pack = £ 2.69. All triptan family drugs (including Sumatriptan) are POM and are not sold over the counter.
I take Lexapro, Klonopin, Seroquel, and Concerta for my mental disorders... They cost my parents a crapload of money. I find it annoying that my mental disorders have pills for them, but they are overpriced. If my family got into a financial problem, I'd be screwed.
ps: I am a chronic pain suffer, as well as living with copd. and with all drugs you get used to them and develop a tolerance. Just hope this aint the case with the Imitrex
I am disabled and on ms contin, and norco.. Also take trazodone for stress and anxiety. Recently was hospitalized for "A Migraine" wft.. I was seeing black bars, that wasnt no migraine..so out of thin air I get migraines. Anywho i got Imitrex and its the only thing that will help once one starts.. The trazdone usually taken regularly will prevent on comming, but all the pain meds do nothing for this mean thing.
I have Hemiplegic Migraines, But so far, Have not been given a suitable preventative medication. Propranolol doesnt work, Pizotifen doesnt work :\ and im 14 so they are reluctant to give me anything else :/ possibly Topamax soon... they are aweful :(
I understand that the company has to recoup the r/d costs, but isn't that supposed to end after the patent does? I mean, that's the point, right? So in this case, the whole generic/brand name this is kind of moot. Maybe other companies aren't producing it at the lower rate, so they're still selling back stock of the brand name? Or someone's being an asshole, which is honestly just much more likely... fuck our medical system...
Migraines wipe me out for 16-24 hours where I can only lay on my back slowly breathing in and out working through the throbbing pain. I start sweating and vomit every 30-45 minutes, for no reason other than the pain. I cannot lay on my side, stomach, or move without vomiting. I had health insurance through Premera Blue Cross, paid for as an employer benefit, who then denied my prescription stating 20 pills was beyond their guidelines, they paid for 9 pills and told me that's all they'd cover.
Wow.. I get this stuff subsidized so I only have to pay $3 to get four tabs. I'm so sorry to everybody who has to pay that kind of price. And I agree that people need it, while I was at school I got them every few days and now that I've left I get them every couple of months but I don't worry about them because I get my tabs for so cheap.
And if these "evil" drug companies didnt make a shit load of money there wouldnt be that drug to begin with. Stop bitching it sucks but its better than now having it in the first place.
@Pavelserboris You obviously don't experience migraines and show little understanding of the profound exploitation of such people by large companies and firms. The U.S. is capitalist to the point where this happens by most companies for any product, but to say that because they supply it no one can say anything is like saying if there were strict regulations for buying food and you could only get 5 lb a week for $300 each week, you should be grateful despite the cheap cost to produce it.
cont...The cost is comparable to the UK unless you have a concession (eg low income, elderly, unemployed) in which case it would be $5.70 for 4 tablets, with the balance subsidised by the Government.
for my moderate migraines I use an Asprin/Codeine combination (it is sold as one tablet in Australia, the one I buy is 300mg Asprin and 8mg Codeine) I have been known to use this in combination with ibuprofen. This is also my local hospitals first line of defence. from teh brief research that I have done, the tablets you are talking about are available here but they require special govt authority and only 24 tablets are allowed in a 6 month period. Cont....
I'm on my second cluster headache of the day. I just started taking sumatriptan yesterday. it truely does work miracles but is extremely expensive... luckily my aunt is friends with a pharm rep. Don't know how I got by without it.
true that!! my mother sister granny myself, all suffer migraines, nowadays about 1 or 2 a month, bout a day at a time, ONCE, i actually thought of suicide, turns out i haven't been the only one, i've dreamed of something cheap enough to carry a supply on me at all times, but your right, it'll probably never happen,
Thank you for this video!!! Good for you for being young & wise and the courage to speak up!!!
YES, drug and insurance companies are screwing USA big time. The rich ones you may be able to afford insurance now but your kids may not be able to for years to come... Not when it's 10K a month. They screwed us with gas prices just now. Why can't they do it with meds and insurance? WAKE UP USA!!!
In canada, its free, if you have medical insurance, which most jobs, such as teaching, medical jobs, proffessors, etc, basically middle class jobs, not mcdonalds etc. My mother uses the same drug, and her insurance takes care of it.
I used to get migraines just like you described, with auras and everything. I figured out they were caused by a preservative often used in bacon. So now I won't get BLTs from Subway. God I love BLTs.
I wish other people's migraines could be as easily dealt with. :(
Yo man, sounds fucked up, I hate the drug companies. If you want an alternative maybe you should research cannabis as medication if you haven't already.
You should seriously consider Xanax for your migraines, if you haven't already.
Granted, it may make you a little "dull", but it's a powerful medication that will nip your migraine in the bud, and generic, it only costs about $15 for 30 pills.
you should talk about lexapro lamictal zoloft cymbalta effexor maybe about the companies-az&me,bridges to access, lilly cares i know they are extremely expensive and people struggle and many people that need these drugs to function and i know these companies have patient assistance programs which try to help patients but it doesnt always work patients have to fit into the 200% poverty level&theres so much paper work they need to fill out just to get somehting they need
hey there! I suffer from seasonal migraines! and I too found that sumitriptan succinate injections are the only meds that actually allow me to function. Indeed the prices are outrageous! Last month I spent well over $1000 in all kinds of meds- maxalt, vicodin, some crappy caffeine pills, and anti-depressants. I feel your pain my friend. Drilling a hole in my head during an attack actually does sound kinda nice tho!
I really feel for you and your family and wasn't aware that the US charged such a high price for Sumatriptan. I suffer from migraine, sometimes I'll get one every day in a week and just could not live without Sumatriptan. I live in the UK and am prescribed 12 100mg tablets by my doctor for the set UK prescription price at £7.20 which roughly equates to $11-12 US dollars. I find it really shocking that people are having to suffer at such a high price, I just hope that something can be done.
I suffer from chronic migraines, supposedly my doctor can do a Prior Auth for any Sumatriptan, but fails to do so.
I also have had these since at least 5 years old. History of them in my family also.
I feel for you man. Somehow we need to rise up against this bull**** health insurance. wanna call me a commie for wanting universal health care. so be it. you obviously done suffer like millions of other people do.
imitrex sucks! i doesnt work for me. plus i have raynauds and the stupid doctor prescribed me imitrex when i cant take it because it reacts with my circulatory disease.god it sucks. fml
You guys still "buy" drugs. You should check out some torrent sites and download your meds for free. The only drugs I ever had problems with from TorrentRx were vaccines, and that's because Norton removed the viruses and rendered my MMRs and OPVs useless.
On second thought, maybe the drug is still being manufactured by only the one company. If that is the case, there would be no reason for them to lower the price.
I am in Canada. You have to get a prescription but for the generic sumatriptan here it is $60 for a pack of 6 pills. I was never offered the actual imitrex at my pharmacy. I picked up two packs today and paid $3.50. I am so glad I have employee health benefits, and live in Canada.
ridiculous, isn't it? I have migraines too. Imitrex is the only thing that works 4 me. Costs me $720 a month, b cuz I need 27 pills (3 packs of 9). That's a house payment 4 sum people! I was so excited when I heard a generic was coming out. I shocked to find out there was no price difference. Amazing! Why is it so much cheaper in every other country in the world? I wish we could get it OTC too, like the UK. I feel your pain, I do!
I have a bunch of imitrex pills left over.. after the treatment my migraines don't even show their face!!! so if anyone is interested let me know.. I have around 20. Just putting it out there.
How does your mother carry on? I just have migraines once or twice a month. Please tell your mom that I admire her, and that she is a real hero in my eyes!
A lot of pharmaceutical companies hire people to post in random internet blogs to hype their medications. It wouldn't surprise me, knowing the level of corruption, for drug company reps to rate this video lower. It also wouldn't surprise me if they create new accounts and begin posting here to badmouth you.
defending them.If drug companies would charge a reasonable rate for the goods and services they provide. which we could all agree is necessary, we wouldn't have talk of new regulations or universal health care. defending these companies only propagates their misbehavior.Thoughts? Cheers and happy days to you.
I will probably get slammed for agreeing with what at this time in this country is the unpopular opinion..why i don't venture to guess. You are very eloquent in your case against the virtual raping of the consumer in this country. This is why I believe universal health care is not only beneficial but necessary in this country. It amazes me how ppl will side big oil and big drug. News for those who do, they don't need your help. they make large enough profit margin w/o the ppl they are bilking--
Go to Canada, buy a years supply :P probably cheaper.

Hi,
Today was the first time I had to get a script from my Dr
for my headache. I could not believe the price. $220.
You are right I would have done anything for the meds.
I felt like a drug addict because "needed" something to get rid of the pain.
To top it off, my insurance did not cover it. I have UnitedHealth care.
The only thing I can say is buy some stock in it. With
"all" the new stresses in the world today, I think this will be the only way people will be able to afford it.

What the fuck the health-insurance is good for then?
Just wondering if not for healthcare, then what, damn it!

I agree with the narrator. Another reason why we need health insurance reform in the USA.

um, what i wrote could easily be missunderstood, what i ment was; is there any bad effects of sumatriptamin? like a cloudy vision, dizzieness etc?

I've had a massive tooth infection, the most pain I've ever experienced.
I couldn't open up my mouth because the air would cause intense pain. i couldn't eat/drink/talk or anything without causing pain.
Yet even with all of that I'm not sure if that even comes close to the pain of a migraine!
I feel for you and I hope the problem with the cost of Imitrex it alleviated over time.

This sounds like there must be collusion going on between the various companies. Isn't this against the law?

I cannot believe our bill for the generic imitrex. generic should mean it costs less. If not, then why bother with a generic!!!
