I tried this, but I couldn't do it, as the .VOB extension isn't shown in the filename of my videos (it would basically be "VTS_01_1"), so I had to right click on the file, click on "Open With, Choose Default Program" and choose vegas11.exe. Problem solved.
@chaffXgrenade omfg, thank you so much for that, my files were names exactly as yours were, with the .VOB not shown and I had no idea what to do but you just saved me a headache, lol. x3
@LordReserei01 Actually I just realized, from another tutorial of yours, that I could ungroup the individual audio\video tracks - then delete. I didn't know you could do that. I couldn't delete the whole track because I had several different clips on the timeline. Thx again. Great tutorials!
You'd be surprised what you can do. You know that oh so great "auto ripple" tool that appeared in Final Cut for OSX last year?...Sony Vegas has had it for years now. It's an underrated program.
Happy my tutorials helped and hope they continue to. =)
One little (maybe stupid) question. Does it work the other way around too? Can you fool your dvd player by changing the file name of an mpg into vob and put it in a folder called VIDEO_TS and burn it on a dvd ? Or is it a bit more complicated than that. I understand you can't create a menu that way, but that isn't always necessary. I'm just curious if it will work, and I think you can probably tell me.
That wouldn't work. You'd need to use a DVD production program like Ahead Nero or DVD Architect - although if you have Windows Vista/7, a DVD program comes with it called Windows DVD Maker.
question... when ripping DVDs to sony vegas i always seem to have the same problem every time. The video is always shaky and speeding up/slowing down, and repeating many parts of the footage. Especially once i start editing it. I think it may be a codec problem but no one else seems to ever have this problem when ripping dvds...
The shaky part sounds like an interlace problem which you can correct in a program like Handbrake after ripping your DVDs although I'm not sure about the speeding up/slowing down/repeating issue.
It might be worth installing a codec pack like K-Lite or CCCP (Combine Community Codec Pack) to see if that fixes the issue and even if it doesn't - those codec packs will provide wider support for playback in other programs.
Another possibility is that it's either the software you used to rip the DVD or Sony Vegas Pro itself which you might have to re-install those...all of this is just a guess since I haven't had that issue either
Sometimes that can happen when the DVD you've ripped contains multiple languages. In the software you use to rip your DVDs, make sure to select one language/audio stream.
I've noticed that anything before Sony Vegas Pro 10.0d and the 32-bit version had the "Not responding" issue with large files (2GB+) . Using Sony Vegas Pro 10.0d, 10.0e or Pro 11 64-bit should fix the issue (if you're operating system is 64-bit).
@LordReserei01 I'm using Sony Vegas Pro 8, so I guess that's the problem. But is there another way I could import the files into SV 8? Perhaps you know a program where I can split the files into smaller parts without quality loss? If you would, it would really help me. Btw, thanks for responding so fast !
You could use a program called DVD Shrink to rip DVDs into 1GB segments or follow the suggestion that I gave to LLDProdz and use a program called Handbrake to convert the .vob files to .mp4.
The time it takes to convert the videos will largely depend on what processor you have (dual core, quad core or six core) and speed.
My old Core2Duo 3.6GHz for example took around 1-2hrs to convert a 2hrs movie, but with my current Phenom II x6 3.2GHz (six core) it takes around 25-30mins.
Have a question. Have you run across a problem with mpg files where certain frames get mixed up while editing? The thing is, I can actually import my Queer As Folk VOB files that I've transferred to my external onto Vegas Pro 10e, no problem. The thing is, when the length of a file is around 50 minutes plus a few seconds/minutes of the next title, Vegas only loads that part of the file (the small part). I've been searching for a way around that without having to go back to mpg. Possible?
Firstly, is that Alison Mack on your page? I think she's great actress (big Smallville and Superman fan)
For your question - that's the first time I've heard of such an issue although you're surely not the first none the less. The only thing I can suggest (and I'm not even sure if this will help) is to rip the episodes into segments.
I guess another thing to try is transcoding the videos to mp4 in a program like Handbrake if Sony Vegas Pro is having issues with the file size or file size
Hope it helps. It's an easy way but might not work 100% of the time if you haven't ripped the DVD properly to get rid of copyright protection or don't have the right codecs. =)
It didn't work for me. I have my own DVD transferred from VHS (no copyright issue) and when convert to MPG and then import of open the 15 minute piece is just a 15 second snip starting 10 minutes in with a few micro-flashes of other parts of the video.
Someone sent me a PM with the same problem recently. If you haven't got a codec pack like K-Lite Mega Codec Pack from filehippo[dot]com it might be worth while downloading and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, make sure you have the latest update which is 10.0e I think
If not, there's another video editor called MAGIX Video Editor SIlver Edition which a website is still offering for free where it usually costs and it's legal. That managed to accept the vob file/s without those issues.
i had no idea i can do that =) thanks. but i have a problem -.- i changed it to mpg but then the audio changed to spanish for some reason. do you know why this happened?
Since it's a DVD file, it could be that Spanish is the first audio track for the video. If that's the case then it might be worth looking into a program called DVDshrink.
DVDshrink lets you rip DVDs, take out copyright protection and take out audio tracks as well as subtitles because VOB files like MKV contain a lot of audio tracks and subtitles for different languages. It's a free program and the safest site to get it from is filehippo[dot]com.
@LordReserei01 oh thank you so much! I'll have to try it real soon. Because I have DVD Decrypter and it was working great when I first got it, but then it started adding subtitles and changing the languages, and just basically annoying the hell out of me. but thanks again!
You could download a codec pack like K-Lite Mega Codec Pack from filehippo[dot]com (I've found that to be reliable site).
Or it may be that you pressed a shortcut on the keyboard that makes videos appear blank. The problem is, I can never remember what the shortcut is myself...if I do it, I furiously hit every key on the keyboard. lol
@LordReserei01 I have K-lite ...other videos are fine so I dont think that is the problem...
It maybe a codec issue but then who knows what... I will try with a different DVD now. If you have another suggestion I will greatly appreciate. I tried import from DVDcam and now I am lost trying to figure another method with DGindex but I can't figure it out yet. You method seemed to me a great solution :/
You could need to reinstall the codec pack if it's an issue, making sure to run the installer as administrator if you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
If you have an ATi video card (HD2xxx, HD3xxx, HD4xxx or newer) you could use AMD Video Converter which uses the power of your GPU to convert videos instead of your CPU...it's faster
A 10 minutes uncompressed gaming video filmed with Fraps that's 4Gb in size on average takes around 3 minutes vs CPU that would take an hour or more..
@LordReserei01 Forget about it, it worked with another DVD. It was a copy protection issue (I do own the rights to copy it lol ) anyways... I LOVE YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL,
oooooh...well in that case, look up a program called DVDShrink. You can drip DVDs with it and it cracks the copyright protection. Another program is Handbreak which also does Blu-Rays.
I got the box set as a gift a few years back for Christmas. I want to try and get "The Pacific" when I have the chance which is just as awesome, if not more epic. =)
What exactly did you mean by rip/extracted???? Please help!

Ripping is the process of copying audio or video content to a hard disk, typically from removable media like a CD or DVD.

You can just right click on the audio track to the side (where the icons are) and delete the track.

You'll find transcoding the videos with Handbrake into mp4 will cut down the size a heap load.
An average 2 hours movie ripped from a DVD at 6GB will shrink down to around 1GB with absolute minimal quality loss.

file size or file length rather.

will this work on Windows XP? or is it just Windows 7?
addictanime123 3 months ago
It will work for Windows XP. The steps I advised NaturesTemper will be a little different though to view/edit the file type.
LordReserei01 3 months ago
The .VOB doesnt come after the name of any of my files so it doesnt let me change them....wtf?
NaturesTemper 3 months ago
You need to enable file extensions. If you're using Vista or Windows 7, you should be able to;
- open the start menu and search for "folder options"
- after clicking on "Folder Options", click on the "view" tab
- make sure that "Hide extensions for known file types" is unticked
- click "apply" and/or "okay"
All files on your computer will now show what file type they are e.g mp3, wav, vob, avi etc
