  • Discovered your channel today. Thank you very much for taking the time and having the passion to share your knowledge. You are very good and it is greatly appreciated..

  • Loved the video. Very basic, yet so much information captured in simple expression.

  • A lens hood?...please explain what its purpose is it!! LUV your vids!!

  • @dreamangeldreamangel

Lens hoods protect the front element of the lens from (hopefully never!) drops onto the ground, rain, etc. They also help cut out lens flare from the sun by "shading" the image sensor and frontal glass of the lens from the sunlight, plus they make your lens look awesome.

  • You, sir, are the balls.

  • A friend got her career started by Texting HOTMODEL to 77948

  • Thank you man this video helped me make my final decision. You're awesome.

  • After 100's of videos this is by far the most informative and funny as well. LOL

  • i have 50mm 1.8 as my 1st lens. until i have enough money for a 24-70 i wanted to buy a macro at the moment. what would you suggest between a 60mm vs 105mm macro lens?? what are the advantages/disadv and such?

  • So clear. So helpful - thank you.

  • hey.. i own a NIKON D5100, my sister in-law is having a baby shower.. and i want to capture some great moments with this camera.. would u be able to tell me a proper f stop, ISO and shutter speed for this event? ITs an indoor event where theres gonna be warm lighting and lower ceiling. Can you please help me out with this situation... Thank you.

  • GREAT job explaining everything clearly! I've been an ameture photographer for year and have taken a photography class, and it never clicked in my head until your video...thanks!

  • hi! got question for you.. i already have an 18-55mm IS lens and since you suggested the 50mm will i get one or should i just use the 18-55? thanks

  • dude, this is the best freaking lens tutorial i've seen! well done! it;s not boring like other ones i've watched, you can tell your passionate and have an extensive knowledge on photography. you rock! thanks for posting you've helped me understand lenses properly now!

  • Hi i currently own a 7d which has a crop of 1.6. my question is what lens should i get for it 17 55 or the 24-70? Im starting out strobe work should i wait for the 24-70 replacement with IS? will IS be essential in strobe work or it doesnt matter? thanx great vid

  • Cut !

    answer:

How much money ya got ?

What kind of camera do you have?

  • My favorite lens is my Canon 100mm F2.8 macro. After that, its my 50mm F2.5 macro. Even though its not as fast as my 50mm F1.8, I think the shots are just a little more sharp. I'm also still using the old 20D. Still love it lots.

  • G'day from Australia, what a jolly good fellow you are ;-) cheers for the videos, keep em coming. Love, peace and respect - Sammo

  • Thank you for this! Very helpful to us noobs :D

  • I have a canon 50d I'm shooting landscapes at the moment but i want to

upgrade my lens I'm looking to buy an ef 70-200mm canon lens will this do the job?

    any other lens suggestion?

  • @oceancalls52 The 70-200 is a telephoto and I would say not ideal for landscapes. I use the EFS 10-22mm on my 50D for a lot of my landscape pictures and would really recommend it. What lens are you using at the moment?

  • Hey there.

I'm just starting in photography and I like to take pictures of flowers, bugs and all sorts of life. I'm looking for a lense but I dont have a lot to spend. Would you recommend a 75-300mm F/4.5-5.6 lense for the purposes I've described?

  • I have a canon 550d/t2i. what would be the best wide angle lens for that camera and i would also like to use the lens for mostly for landscape and birds eye views of things.

  • i have just watched the video its really help full but can you please suggest me the good lens for low light photography actually i m a wedding photographer and i hate using flash so want really powerful lens for low light conditions so what you recond

  • what are your thoughts on the new sigma 17-70mm os hsm? I plan on using it as an upgrade to the standard kit lens.

I like to take night photography/ low light pics. some fast action shots, macro, low light macro, bokeh, long exposure. and lastly family pics/ portraits.

    what are ur thoughts? thanks.

  • i just got my 50mm 1.8 about a month ago and i loooove it. still trying to get use to the heavy DOF and the like 2ft focus lol. but it is awesome for low light & portrait =)

  • Can You Buy Any Lens For Any Camera

  • @uwak1223 Make sure it is the same manufacturer first. But each manufacturer does make a lot of the same lenses. I believe canon and Nikon have the biggest selections.

  • Great video. Thank you for not putting me to sleep.

  • does zoom lens degrade quality?

  • wow amazing review. god its nice to hear some one that can explain something in a straight forward and simple manner.

  • how do u know fish look out of eyes like that ?

  • Hi, would you recommend an 85mm on a crop camera? I currently have an 80-200mm lens but thinking of replacing it with an 85mm. Thanks.

  • brilliant !

  • this is great thank you

  • Great info in this video

  • I love the way you did this review!

  • ahhh....am going to pick up my first dslr( canon 550d)....am going to pick up the 50mm prime....but what i am confused is whether i should pick up 18 to 135mm...or go for the 18 200mm....which i really liked....n makes a lot of sense....my basic intreast is street photography. n landscape?....but what is the advantage or rather the disadvantage of that extra zoom....of the 18 200 as opposed to the 18 135

  • Robert love your tutorials. I love my Olympus E-520 cause it's light enough to carry anywhere. My question is, what's your take on the four thirds system? Also I like taking photos of show cars & the occasional pretty girl standing next to the car...what's the best lens to use to get both of them in a photo? I've got a 50mm Prime; 14-43mm; 40-150mm & a 70-300mm. Thanks for teaching this dumb*** how to shoot decent photos.

  • i have an olympus e-420 can I buy that $100 lens. if I can ware can i buy it??

ps keep the videos coming helps me alot thanks man!!!!

  • Thanks for a good lens guide, it's helping me make an informed choice. I did have to watch it 3 times as you do speak very quickly for a beginner but I got all the info eventually. Might I suggest doing a 3 part video and focus each part on the different choice aspects

  • While these videos are absolutely great, the best thing is by far the fact that you reply to people, and every time helpful! It is an extension to the videos and it works great. Thank you very much for doing that :)

  • Hey I just wanted to say thank you! I'm pretty new to the photography scene and I'm learning TONS from your videos! I can't wait to get out and practice.. I hope you keep the tutorials comin :)

  • @FontanaKnowledge hi Robert ;) just need ur suggestion , can i use 50mm1.8 for macro as well as landscape? i have a 18-55mm but i am not so happy with it , so could u suggest me one lens that willl serve multipurpose? "

  • Great video!!! You seem like a fun guy.. Thanks bro!!

  • Comment removed

  • What camera bodies do you use with the lenses in this video?

  • very inspiring videos

  • Thankx man. I really enjoy watching all your videos. You have tought me alot of things that I never knew. I was going to go out with a friend that was going to have a tutorial in Photography but, I stayed home and watched your videos instead. All these info made me understand what my camera can do. I'll keep watching though...hehehe... all free. thankx for the free stuff dude.

things really went well for you. I'll go out there and take shots now! thankx

  • Hi, I saw all your tutorials about photography and very impressed... I do videography and bigginer in photography... I am planning to buy canon 5D Mark II. what is your best suggestion for a prime lans and zoom lense.. my budget for both lenses is $1250

  • I love this guy... in the full platonic sense of the word :D

  • I JUST LOVE U MAN.....U R SUCH A POSITIVE SOUL.......SO GOOD....SO SIMPLE.....SO INTELLIGENT.....N SO GIVING WITH YOUR KNOWLEDGE....:)

  • hey bro.. i have a nikon d3000 dslr, what zoom lens is the best for my cam? for now i have a18-55mm and 55-200mm,, is there a lens of 18-300mm??

    thanks!..

  • great review, thank you!

  • on the 85mm looks like her arms are cropped off and on the 155mm most of her body and some of her head is cropped off. I presume this was the look he was going for ?

  • Can you explain what makes a lens with a WIDE maximum aperture considered to be a "fast" lens? What is "fast" referring to exactly?

  • @NoSoldat4u Fast refers to how quickly light gets into your camera using a given lens. The wider the "opening" or "aperture", the more light gets in during any allotted "time" or "shutter speed".

So if you have a aperture of F/5.6 shooting at 1/125 shutter speed compared to a aperture of f/2.8 shooting at 1/125 shutter speed, the 2.8 is letting 4 times the amount of light in the same 1/125 of a second.

This means the exposure would be the same if your f2.8 was shooting at 1/500 of a second

  • @FontanaKnowledge Ohh okay I see now. Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate it.

  • @FontanaKnowledge

so the difference increases exponentially ... I did not know that, thanks... :)

  • @NoSoldat4u I would look at it more like: slow lenses can't get a good exposure at high speeds because the picture would come out very dark in most cases. While a "fast" lens would be able to shoot at high speeds and still get good a exposure.

So in the end slow lenses are slow because high speeds are unusable and fast lenses are fast because they can use it.

That's how I see it at least.

  • If I have the 85mm 1.2 do I still need the 50 mm 1.8

  • Nice video, agree those 50mm fast lenses given the price point are a must have. The f/1.4 was the first decent lens I bought and for me personally I've decided to not purchase any above f/2.8 since seeing the great DOF and low-light capabilities of the faster lenses. The bodies get cheaper and better all the time so I've been shelling out for good "non S" lenses for my 450D so I have a nice selection when I move to a full frame.

  • i'm one of your followers.. i've learned a lot from you.

anyway, i'm stuck which lens to pair with my 70-200mm 2.8

    my options are EFS 17-55mm 2.8 IS, EF 24-70mm 2.8L, EF 24-105mm 4L, EF 16-35mm 2.8L and the 17-40mm 4L

i'm using crop framed body. THANKS! and i'm hoping for your reply...MORE POWER TO YOUR CHANNEL!

  • @TheWaksfly If I were you I would go with the 17-55 f/2.8 or the 16-35 f/2.8. As far as I know the 17-55mm is a lot less expensive but I am not familiar with it. The 16-35 is a fantastic lens.

    I hope this helps.

  • @FontanaKnowledge thanks!

  • @FontanaKnowledge i went to the camera store today and i found a super bargain 17-40 f/4L! around $600...i ask them to reserve it for me cuz i have to think first if i'm goin with 16-35 f/2.8L or the 17-40.

what d u think? is there really a major difference between these lenses in terms of IQ? i'm gonna use it for landscapes and long exposure shots.

anyway m concerned that EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is not weather sealed...dust may accumulate inside. THANKS!

  • @TheWaksfly If you are going to be doing only landscapes then you might want to buy the 17-55 f/4, but the F/2.8 lens allows twice as much light to enter the camera as as f/4. This means that if you needed it for anything else like events or sports or people that it would serve you much better. Happy Shooting

  • haha! I just love it when you talk! "takes pictures that have this look like you were a fish and you're looking out of your squirty little fish eyes!" a replayed it a lot of times and it makes me laugh every time! THE BEST! You simplify a lot of things and learning with you is soooooo fun!

  • Hi,

Excellent tutorials !!! ... I'm stepping up from my p&s & was considering getting both the 50mm & a 16-85mm to get comfortable with before I consider other lenses. I'm still into shooting every & anything. What do you think ?

  • I've just found your videos today, and so far they are great! I've bought a nikon D5000 to just take pics of my 10 month old baby. And I was wondering what lens you would suggest for taking pics of her.

  • @jesusfreakman I personally like my 24mm f/2.8 for taking pictures of my kids but a 28mm or 50mm would probably be cool as well. I like fast lenses so you can get them in most lighting situations. I hope this helps.

    Peace

  • I just camped on your 1-13 video tutorials in one sitting and some extras. Just got me a cannon 550D and learning to use it. Your videos gave me so much knowledge on how to use my camera. I might of been one of those who puts their camera up on craigslist under " Selling bairly used camera cause I dont know how to use it" catagory if it wasnt for your videos. Mahalo Nui Loa

  • @ilikewach AWESOME!!! I hope you have a long and exciting life as a photographer. Send me some samples or enter my contests so I can see your work.

    Peace

  • thank for the tips

  • Thanks for the video man. I learned a lot. I need a lens and don't know what the hell to get still. haha the 50mm 1.8 is pretty cool. That might be a good idea.

  • Do you explain in any of your videos on how to use the 70-200 2.8 lens? I bought a Sony the other day and being new to photography don't understand all the settings. Also, for the lenses you describe in this video, what would be the pros/cons of using a lens hood?

  • @cmorrowxx You basically use a lens hood when there is strong lighting (mostly outdoors in the sun) to prevent ghosting/flare. That's the pro's of the lens hood. The cons is that you can't use flash with it because it will render a shadow on your picture. It is highly advised to take off the lens hood when using the flash. Hope this helps.

  • hahahahaha

'but if you want to take photos of people who dont know you are there... eahrrrrrrggg' hahaahahahahha

    great video

  • Great tutorial!

  • dude this guy is AWSOME :P thanks dude. ha ha ha he looks like the type of dude who you can have a good beer with LOL :) sweeet

  • Very informative, thank you.

  • hey again !

i wanna know the difference between a USM and non-USM lens

  • @russvien08 USM (Ultra Silent Motor) is all about the auto focus feature of your lens. There are lenses that auto focus, but make this screeching or hissing sound which drive most photographers batty. But with the USM, you shouldn't be getting this problem.

  • Great, informative video. Thanks.

    BTW, I love my 50mm 1.8 lens. It's a great deal.

  • dude i just went on samy's website, looked for that 55 1.8 lens.....well i havent found it, annnd those lenses are way more than 100 bucks....where you get yours???

  • hey !!!

what lens should i get first..

    canon 50mm f/1.8 ?

    or sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ?

    thx..

  • That depends entirely on your usage of the lens and what your budget is. If you plan on shooting sports and need a zoom it would be all about the 70-300. But if you are looking for low lit scenes such as clubs or if you are doing some artistic things with Depth of Field, then it is all about the 50mm f/1.8.

    I hope this helps =o)

  • oh thx alot..

but is there a lense for sports and for low light photography ??

like all in one lens ?

  • I use my 70-200 f/2.8 for all occasions but its cost is somewhat prohibitive to most folks who are not doing it professionally. The 50mm f/1.8 costs $100 and the 70-200 f/2.8 costs $1,299 That is what helps many choose. =o)

  • dang...

    $1299 ??

wow/..i guess id go with the 70-300mm

cuz i love talking pictures of animals..

but evrytime i go close them..they run away...

    soo thx anyways..

but is there a big diff between 200mm and 300mm ?

  • Yeah, but the major difference is the 2.8 which allows for low light shooting

  • but 4-5.6 aperture is good for daylight shooting right ?

  • Yes, It will work great

  • thx for the brief lesson!!! :)

  • im planning to shoot on outdoor..i love to take photos on different landscape..and also im planning to shoot on wedding ceremony, graduation ceremony, any celebration..what kind of lens should i use? can u give me some model name of at least 2 lens that i should look for? im planning to use it on nikon d90 BTW. thanks....

  • im saving money coz im planning to buy my very first DLSR camera nxt month..after watching some youtube videos(unboxing, reviews etc.) i finally considering buying nikon d90..so ryt now my problem is LENSES!! im really confuse.. BTW this video helps me a lot..but im still confuse for some detail. im planning to buy this lense Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II somebody said this is an all purpose camera but it's worth around 900 to 1000$.i jst want to know if its worth a penny..

  • will the 50mm lens fit to any camera?

  • You must find one that fits your camera model but most cameras will have one out there.

  • yeah but my camera does't have one that cost $99 :(

  • I'm just starting into photography, I'm coming from filming skateboarding but I find photography more interesting. I found your videos on here and have learned so much from them. Now I just have to get my d40 and go out and shooot

  • Nikon - AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G Lens

What can u say about this kind of lens. im using this lens right now. :D Thanks

  • Sounds Awesome, Nice wide angle and a very big maximum aperture. That is a fine lens sir, a fine lens!

  • hey man i love ur vids!!hahah thanks for making the theories so simple and fun to learn!=) hahah

  • Nice vid good tips for a free green screen guide you may want to follow me on twitter/photohow

  • too fast XD.... what you favorite DSLR..?

  • Thank you for the tips, great vid!

  • where did you get that 15m 1.8 ?

  • Its a 50 mm f1.8

  • @FontanaKnowledge $100 is cheap, can you please post the link?

  • This was the best guide in words i could understand.

    Thanks

  • Is the 70 - 200 you have the IS version? Would you recommend the IS over the no IS? THanks Rob.

  • Love your passion! Very helpful advice too - I was trying to decide between a 50mm/1.8 or a 35mm/1.8 for my new Nikon... I'll take your advice and got for the 50mm as a good all-rounder. I'll also save up for the f1.4 - love Bokeh effects and it looks great on the 1.4. Thanks for your tips - will watch more :D

  • Did you know a 35mm lens would be more useful? If you were to crop a picture taken with a 35mm, you would end-up with the same shot as taken with a 50mm. There are times however, when you just can't get everything in the frame when using a 50mm. Personal preferences, I know but I'd rather have a 35mm standard lens rather than 50mm. If you like Bokeh, what about 85mm 1.8 Nikkor? The longer the lens, the more Bokeh!

  • Are the focal lengths for the portraits for FX or DX cameras?

  • Thank you man, great video. What do you think about Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO?. I will buy it next week for a great price. I think it is a great universal lens. And it is avalible for people like me (with a low budget :) ).

  • nice

    thanks

    tc

  • now i want a lens.. but none of my cameras can change lenses ahah... but i would def get the f1.8 50mm for sure.

    awsome

    thanks man

  • awesome video, I asked for a couple lenses for christmas, The 50mm was at the top of my list, Happy Holidays!

  • thanks you make it plain mans talk

  • great video..very easy to understand

  • This was awesome!! I have watched sooooo many videos on this and you have explained it perfectly. Thanks!!

  • great video Robert. the 50mm 1.8 was a great introduction lens to me and I appreciate you opening up my eyes to it. i just bought an 85mm 1.8 and it's in the mail right now. i got it because it has 8 blades instead of 5 blades like the 50mm, so my bokeh should be smoother. also the auto focus is a bit noisey, so i'm going to try this USM on the 85mm. either way, I'm still keeping the 50mm 1.8.

  • AWESOME thats good to hear Tim. I hope it works out good for you.

  • lol who wouldn't like the 50mm f1.8 ? it's probably the most versatile walk around lense for the price. Maybe you just forgot to take the cap off or something...

  • btw, thanks for the video. Now I know why I can't get lower than f/5.6 on my lens because it is not fixed aparture. Keep doing this man.... I signed up for youtube just for your channel.

  • How do you mean??

  • Is it a bad lens?? Or do you just have separation anxiety about spending money =o)

  • Awesome video Rob!

Keep up the good work you bad muthafuka!

  • Hi Robert,

I got your DVD and love it bro thanks again for all your time.

You said when the student is ready the teacher will appear. You were right Peace mang

  • Great video as always

  • lmao hey little squirlly let me take a picture of u!!

  • I have a Nikon D5000 just got a 35mm 1.8 what have you heard about this lense? Looked at the 50mm 1.4 but it was af not af-s, the af-s was out of my budget.

    By the way, awesome vid!

  • Can you clear up something for me. U said that the flash will recycle faster with a fast lens. How does the flash know how fast a lens you have?

  • Most flashes communicate with your camera to put out the correct amount of light for your cameras current settings. If your lens allows more light in at a time the flash only needs to put out that much light.

When the flash recycles it needs to replace the power it just used. If it used less light it can recycle faster because it replaces a smaller amount of power. I hope that clears that up for you -Peace

  • yah Samy's hooking it up again :) Still loving the classes but I was wondering if you could do me a favour. I already own a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 but I think I'm having some buyers remorse for not spending the bit extra on the Canon 70-200mm. Any chance the boys at Samy's could lend you the sigma for a comparison?

  • you never told us what camera you are using...

    is that a 5D Mark 2?

    Great video as always

  • I use a 5D and Samy is letting me use his 5D mark II for now =o)

  • Fifty changed my photography, I agree, everyone should have one.

  • awesome tutorial! keep it up...

  • hi there!thanks for all the info, now im planning to buy a telephoto lense, i was thinking to buy the sigma 70-300mm or the 28-300mm... which is better?

  • Hey, i would love to see a similar tutorial about cameras too. I'm thinking to buy a SLR camera but don't have any idea.

    Thank you!!

  • I am currently editing my Camera one of these. It only goes over a couple of Canon models though. I will be doing a Nikon one soon as well.

  • I'm finally starting to an idea how the whole thing works. I hope i'll be able to choose the camara and lens i want and buy them.

Thank you very much for this tutorial.

  • I bought my 50mm 1.8 lens from Samys because of their support for you......Ken

  • Thanks Ken, I appreciate it.

  • This sucks, I have the Nikon D5000 and the 50mm prime you described does not Auto focus with my camera, I need the newer $400 version. : (
