No mate listen to Labi Siffre "The Vulture" and thats where that piggy-eyed ponce got his sound from. Someone has even posted the song toa Jamiroquai video! Listen and reap...I know what you mean about Roy Ayers though - very close not no cigar...
@BallentineChen Yeah, that is one example but I can hear the chorus in my head so there must be another that I am thinking of. Interesting tho that it appears that Description of a Fool ALSO used a song of the same title by Sly Stone.
Zachary was an amazing human ... my first european trip was with roy, zachary and dennis davis, steveie wonder's drummer .... what an amazing group of musicians. just saw roy here in atlanta last night (7/117/10) in a tribute to FELA ! What a show! ROY AYERS will allways help me LOVE THE SUNSHINE and keep RUNNING AWAY from the POO POO LA LA!
Good Damn!!! I Almost Love This Live Version As Much As The 12" Version! Love The Enthusiasm, The Vibe And The Melody of This Song! Mad Props To You Sir Ayers!!!
Man my uncle Zach was killing it like he always did man I miss him so much his music is running through my veins so the music lives on...... RIP Uncle Zach
technical ability = 100%, fit with the song = 100%, feel for the music = 100%. Still one of my favourite solos of all time. Why did God take you from us, Zachary?
Converted the sound track from this 'Live at Ronnie Scott's' video to cassette years ago, still my favourite guitar solo, Zachary was amazing - so sad what happened to him
Sorry to walk in late here, but I've gotta now ask...who was Zachary, who was he to Roy Ayers and what happened to him and this woman? Thanks much....Joel
Zachary died on February 20, 1997 at the age of 36 while on holiday in Miami Beach. He was trying to save the life of another swimmer, Eugenia Poleyeff, 66 of Brooklyn, N.Y.
If I remember rightly he had saved someone else in similar circumstances previously, tragically his unselfish act this time cost him his life.
He was a very close friend of Roy Ayers and an amazing musician, check out Groovin', Laid Back & Uptown Groove.
I can honestly say that this is a groovin sound and my uncle zac the guitarist was always jamming like this even when he was not on tour with roy ayers he was jazzfunk.
Zachary Breaux on the guitar, a old friend of mine, very brave man lost his life in 1997 saving someone elses, a guitarist of distinction, rest in peace bro...
Yes, it was the second time he tried to save a person drowning, that time he was succesfull , just a very good soul, and one hell of a guitarist, came out of the Donald bird school of excellence ... By the way the percussionist died a while back too...Heart attack. Peace and love ....
yup..he openly admits that roy ayers is a big influence..even jammed on stage with roy at montreux 2003.
not to mention the song 'runaway' by jamiroquai is an interpretation of this classic..just listen to the bass line. slightly diff groove, but very similar.
I believe that's Dwight Gassaway on percussion, William Allen (Puncho and the Latin All-Stars) on bass - I saw this whole concert on video and I remember Roy saying the drummer had been "borrowed from Mr Stevie Wonder" but I can't recall his name, sorry.
True that's the late great Dwight Gassaway on percussion - but the bass player's name is Roy Louis. The drummer "that's been borrowed from Stevie Wonder" would be my dear friend Dennis Davis - but the guy that's playing on this clip is Ben Perowsky. Dennis re-joined Roy Ayers right around that time. On guitar is the late great Zachary Breaux.
I moved to NYC around that time (1988) and used to hang and jam with these guys,,,, great memories! - Kaspar Galli
@kasponya I thought the bass player on this gig was William Allen (of Pucho and the Latin All Stars) - I'm sure his name was on the credits at the end of the video. I got confused about the drummers, I have a couple of Roy Ayers live gigs on tape and Dennis Davis played on the other one (the Prestatyn Soul Weekender) - thanks for correcting that. You were very lucky to play with these guys - great musicians although, I have to say, Roy's regular bass man Dave Metzcen was better than this guy.
Sorry to say he is - he was vacationing with his family in Florida a few years ago and saw a woman being pulled out to sea by a rip current. He went in and saved her, but collapsed and died on the beach. Usually thought of as a "smooth jazz" artist, but this track really shows his skill.
The lady in question Eugenia Poleyeff, also died I'm afraid, this was the second time that Zachary had gone to someones rescue, he saved a guy in Italy a few years previously.
Holy Shazoo that's a rippin' guitar solo!! Man, that brother is one mean dude and he's even got that pissed off look like "Yeah, I know this shit is badass!" Solid. Thx for uploadin' this gem tmuddimer. I dig it.
