The main reason Van Halen's solo sounds so awful here is because he doesn't seem to know exactly when he should be taking the lead. Michael is yelling out "Take it Eddie, Eddie! Take it!" and there is a big air hole where Eddie should be shredding, but he's not. My guess would be there was lack of rehearsal time.
