Charlie Brown's New Year's resolution should be "taking others advice" sometime sense his own always end up in failure. If he would of went to the party, etc. he would of got a chance to dance with the red head. Also his other New Year's resolution should be no more "procrastination", if he would of done his book reading and report ahead of time and marked it on his calender he would of beeen able to go to the party, etc.
Why are they not wearing coats if it's cold enough for there to be snow on the ground--are they trying to catch the flu? And what's with leaving the door open? I guess power heat wasn't so expensive back then, huh?
@TheJonMastu1011 We all know how smart Linus is and how advanced his knowledge of things is for his age, and he doesn't seem to be the smartest kid in the whole school either.
Yes, in that order. Another musical, you might wonder? What can I say? If that's the only way ta get them to grow, so be it. Admittedly, I don't know how ta treat those other songs, but I digress.
The songs also indicate that the producers still had a bit more of promotional tidbits to include in the cartoon like Flashbeagle before it. So was this supposed to be a sequel? If so, why not toss in some more developmental moments while yer at it (musical or otherwise)? Maybe give that horrible MV fer Don't Give Up, CB the proper ending it deserves. You could go like this:
Let's Have A Party; Some Day, CB; Foxtrot; Don't Give Up, CB...
@U1986NuclearGrounds And yet even more reasons to why Don't Give Up CB was much better on the Flashbeagle album than on the show the MV was on. I portrayed the music video for the special completely different, since I heard the Flashbeagle version of the song first.
Wait, I remember a slide show where a blond girl (whom I assume to be Sally, but bears more semblance to Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls) got to sing some of Linus' lines early on?
Then the producers got to do just that. With its cancellation, I think this special came about because someone really enjoyed working on the show and was mad that this arc never made it in. Flashbeagle may not have been very structurally written, but I found it to be more of a New Year's special than what we got here.
"To the loving memory of Bernie Gruver." Some dedication. That poor man and his loved ones.
As we'll see much later, the story arc itself seems more fitting as an ep of The CB And Snoopy Show, rather than its own half-hour special. Too bad low ratings killed the show the year prior. Before the show, the specials were getting more implausible and rushed, hinting a desire to make a running TV series.
And Linus...ooooh. "They wrote this book using minimal resources. You should show appreciation by reading it." The little sleaze bucket emotionally manipulates his friend, enforces him selectively, and steals his girl AGAIN. Why, I bet when Charlie got his hand caught in that mail slot, Linus just left 'im there ta suffer. Linus, you DESERVE ta have Lucy beat you up and ruin yer horrible blanket after this.
Every time I see that gag, I can't help mentally screaming fer the unwilling bowling pins to just step outta the way; jump over it; or kick it back. It's the late 1980s, darn it! And they're not infants!
I see the LRHG's back to her Lila phase. Guess the producers must've thought Lila was prettier than Mary Jo. But if I had my picks this time as to who I hated most, they'd hafta be PP and Linus. Same as the third and fourth movies, PP's just too pushy and dumb, and I can't tolerate it.
(B) This cartoon premiered - on New Year's Day, no less - in 1986. My birth year. I mean, yes, there were the Challenger and Chernobyl, but...didn't they think ANY good would come out of 1986? Does this one now come off as some omen of all the things wrong with that year?
How fitting that that snowball gag, which I hate even more than the one where a baseball knocks off most of Charlie's clothes, oughta complete the opening.
You and Sally just leave him alone! (calms down) Okay. Okay. I'm cool now. Pardon the tantrum. Does it sound like I've snapped? If so, you'd be correct. And here's why:
(A) Not only is the plot cruel and unusual, but this was my first Peanuts cartoon ever. Seriously. All the better-written ones that already existed, and THIS train wreck found its way ta me first. It doesn't help that it's nestled between the two Broadway specials, both being worth far more time and effort.
Stupid jerks! I asked you before, I'm asking again: Why can't you see you're hurting him?! Why?! WHY?! And what's this junk about Linus not enjoying himself with Sally, or Schroeder to Lucy? Or about Schroeder not dancing, or Charlie not knowing how ta dance? What about Flashbeagle? What about You're A Good Man, CB, which only aired two months prior?! And PP, if yer looking fer Charlie, why don't you check the bench where you last left 'im?!
Okay, jerks! What'd you do to Gulliver's Travels?! Yes, I read the corresponding story arc of the comics. Charlie (and fer that matter, THE WHOLE CLASS) had to do book reports on Gulliver's Travels, and he got a bad grade due to his own procrastination. But here? He has to do one of the harshest books possible fer someone his age; everybody keeps holding him back and won't let 'im explain; and the teacher...don't get me started.
@U1986NuclearGrounds I have that Gulliver's Travels comic in "You're not for Real, Snoopy". Maybe you have the same book? I like that how he thought he could read a 254-page book in the afternoon & write a report on it that evening. This was clearly a spin-off from the GT comic
@U1986NuclearGrounds I can't say I like it much either. Yeah, Linus is supposedly CB's best friend. This isn't the only time I've seen him do this to CB.... So, gocomics.com is where you saw all the CB comics? Very good to know, I'll have to check that out
Unbelievable. You'd think the people giving us this junk would actually watch it themselves before releasing it. Maybe then they'd realize the damage they're causing us! Ah, but I wouldn't count on it.
War And Peace? Yer joking, right? A book that long and hard to read fer young kids (generally speaking; no offense), full of illegitimacy, seduction, attempted suicide, and all that junk...assigned to an elementary schooler? And then Crime And Punishment, which is similar in nature?
Im so glad charles had a bad new year,he was so annoying in the 50s strips, this was changed in the 60s but believe it,he was like a male version of lucy
@TTBurger88 funny enough, i recently found out that sparky almost ended peanuts in the 70s. If that had happened, Linus and Heather would have been a couple and Charlie Brown would have ended up with Marcie
