The fact that Michael practiced more than 10 hours a day for more than 40 years also helps lol. And he's left-handed, which means very small movement in his left hand (notice his pinky never leaves the fretboard like a normal right-hander).

I think what they are getting at is that shredding often feels pre-planned and over-rehearsed. In short, there doesn't seem to be much impov going on. Another problem is that these players don't mix it up enough (not necessarily this guy, though). It's just an avalanche of notes with no variety of phrasing.
