today is her birthday and this clip is making me happy.oh WHY wasn't she in more movies . .. .People remember now as an old battle-ax. But HERE is the performer who was the biggest Broadway musical star -- dare I say, ever?
The film is "Kid Millions" that starred Eddie Cantor, Ann Sothern, Ethel Merman, Block & Sully, and the Gorgeous Goldwyn Girls haha, I just got the 1934 sheet music for this song from the film today. The song is called "An Earful of Music" (lyrics by Gus Kahn & Melody by Walter Donaldson). Glad I found this clip!
I only knew Ethel from the 1970s, by which time she had pretty much become a caricature of herself. It's wonderful to see what made her so rightly a legend.
Sir(s): Just so U know, my Grandmother used to sing as does Ethel "Mermaid" Merman in this 1934 rendition of "Anti-Blues" and very much "Pro-Blueheads." The last term, here, comes from a small boy running around the house "fixing things his way" with his battery operated toy drill, back in the Municipality of Germantown, Tennessee. As Lawrence Welk would say, "Thank U so Very Much, Ladies & Gentlemen." Like the Country song also, Kids Say the Darnest Things. And now, Have a Nice Day. Godspeed.
Had a great figure and face, always very animated and bright-eyed except on the sad songs when she established that kind of mood beautifully. No one like her ever.
So all those pianists can play the same song in unison without any sheet music? And all those girls are on the payroll of this small music store just to occasionally provide a backup chorus for Ethel? And where's the full orchestra coming from?
Well, as they say - that's Hollywood. And a good thing, too.
god, she was so gorgeous! i don't think she got enough credit for being a great beauty. needless to say, her voice is flawless. and thank you so much for posting this song. i've loved it for years.
It really doesn't get any better than this!

Ethel swings another great song but this never went on in my local music shop, what a pity.

In her younger days, Ethel Merman was not unpleasant looking. But a beauty? Well, there's no accounting for taste.
She sure could belt out those tunes, though.

My goodness--a find! And Merman's voice is already formed here so young.
