Yes, her voice is "heavenly." This early Tibaldi is among the greats in opera. If you want feeling and emotion beyond this pure vocal beauty, listen to Callas. They are, at their prime, the two greatest sopranos, in my opinion.
This is Tebaldi at her best vocally and artistically. If you listen to her 1959 recording of same the voice is diminished. This recording and the best of Callas are the two best of this aria. Here we can see why Toscanini said "She has the voice of an angel."
Tebaldi is one of my favourite singers-have seen her and many of the "greats" live at Covent Garden-saw her though ay the Royal Albert Hall in a recitall with Franco Corelli in1973-she is AWESOME -BUT in this aria there is only one Diva ---Callas
@kennetti76 i agree with you completely. on a technical level, this version surpasses callas on dynamics alone and the ease at which she sings; but her histrionics are as though she's singing, not from the heart; but from her head which works for some arias, but not as tosca singing into vacuous oblivion asking why her lord has forsaken her. it needs that extra something that is lacking here; though both singers are legendary in their own right
That she couldn't sing Puccini but sings it like Mozart,, is a misconception of what this aria is about. It shouldn't be sung dramatically or dripping with sentimentality, but pure, she sings it the way Puccini wanted it sung.
Tebaldi can sometimes let out a flat note BUT 100 times more important: She knew how to interpret music. Most singers don't.
Renata's diction (eg.1:10) is perfect here, in the 1961 version the mature Renata expresses this feeling with colour and warmth and understanding-Tosca-she now knows what it feels like to be spurned by men, rejected and how little men understand how a woman will sacrifice anything to be loved and wanted, even if she has become a product of the man's desires and casts her own needs aside.
During her debut in the early fifties at the SF Opera, I believe that Tebaldi was granted the last encore allowed in that house for this aria. Personally heard the story from Mr. Robert Weede, the Scarpia in that performance. Was a magical moment to hear him describe it.

As good as Renata sings, I personally don't think this is the best rendition of "Vissi d'arte", and although I'm a Callas fan, I think this is one for Caballe.
If that's the only thing you can hear from Tebaldi at her glorious best, then you can't know very much about beautiful singing. You're in the tiny minority of people who are imbecilic enough to even mention pitch. Go spend some time at La Scala, and mention that idiotic remark, and see what you get. They'll eat you alive. Move on asshole.
Absolutely sublime.

The only thing that's flat here is your brain-that's if it's operating on a significant level, which I highly doubt.
