  • Wah kya baat hai,

  • Excellent stuff1 Your strokes are very clear, and an inspiration. Thanks.

  • love..........

  • how much u practise daily

  • @utsavmohanlakhera

not enough! i practice too much on furniture

  • Hello Gurdain. This is an amazing clip. I would especially like to point out the dhera dhera. I'm still working on making that stroke better. Any tipis?

  • @marx99

    i need some tips myself

i have to say it is probably the hardest stroke to maintain

if you haven't practiced a while, it is usually the dheredhere that starts to show the evidence

best idea is to play small practice pieces using different types of the dheredhere that you have learnt

so any composition you have with dheredhere, try taking 4 beats of it with the dheredhere in and looping it at a slow tempo and speeding up until the quality goes down

  • yaar....bahot hi TAGADA bajate ho.... I must say.. you have done a lot of practice espcially on Dhere Dhere...

  • your playing is amazing. can you help me to understand one bol. I heard it from Pt. Samta Prasad's playing.

Dhere Dhere kitatak thathirikita dhera dhera dhera kitathak thathirikitathak + ulta

  • @wannakuwatta69 I've heard this bol before but never learnt it. I think the dhere dhere dhere is actually played gere tere tere when this composition is played in fast tempo.

  • Superb!!! Gurdain, I have been following tabla for the last 20 years. I learnt to some extent as well. Now I am in a different field. advertising. But Tabla is my inspiration. From my little knowledge I can see that you have a great carrier in front of you. I would like to see you play this bol. It's Pt.Samta Prasad's.

Dhera Dhera kitatak thathirigida Dhera Dhera Dhera kitatak thathirikitatak -Ulta

please correct if it is not complete. I heard it from an old recording.

  • @wannakuwatta69

yes that is correct - in single speed I have heard people play it like this

but when played double the last dhere dhere dhere becomes gere tere tere because it is physically illogical to go from the end of terekete (thirigida) to dhere as they use the same side of the hand

its the same reason we never play terekete terekete in normal style - we always have to change it to 3 finger style

  • Hey gurdain amazing tabla playing!!!

just wanted to ask how often should one practice to become a professional?

  • I don't know about when one becomes a professional, but tabla is a never-ending journey. You set yourself goals and you work at them, and you do start to see results pretty quickly. Often it is the journey that is more rewarding than you think!

  • I dont know much about tabla theory but the Shankar Ghosh compositions are superb. It appears to me that he adds a stylish touch to the original old stuff. At least it sounds that way.

  • yeah, he is bored with hearing the same compositions being played and likes to alter them

he's well known for sitting in tabla solos and spontaneously shouting at the main artist to play something new or to change the taal and because he's so well respected, it keeps the main artist not only worried but prepared to play the best

  • hi gurdain amazing tabla playing!!!!

Just wanted to ask how often should one practice to become professional?

  • @gsingh93

not sure about professional, but as long as you practice because you are enjoying it and have patience to see improvements, then you will one day become much better. it is not always about speed or clarity, but making the tabla speak and give it your own personality - something i am trying to do. it is a never ending journey. practice a few hours a day if you can, but make it meaningful - play all the things you are struggling with but make sure you practice all kinds of compositions.

  • Hi Gurdain how often in a year do you get lessons from Pt Shankar Ghosh?

  • He comes over for my parent's Chakardar Summer School every year in the summer, so yeah I guess once a year

  • Hi Gurdain how often in a year do you get lessons from Pt Shankar Ghosh?

  • thanks for the advice. kann you give some small combination bol to practice dhere dhere.thks

  • simplest phrase to keep playing is:

    dheredhere ketetaka

    again and again

    or a harder one is:

    dheredhere dheredhere ketetaka

    another one is:

    dheredhere ketetaka TAKAtere ketetaka

the capital letters indicates you play with 4 fingers on ink of tabla on right hand

ketetaka is played ke, te with 3 fingers on right hand on ink, ta with first finger on right hand on ink and ka is the same as ke

  • How do you play dhere-dhere?

  • DhereDhere is probably the most difficult phrase to maintain when playing tabla and takes time to develop.

The dhe section is played with the right side of the palm from your little finger to the bottom of your hand and the Re section is played with the section between the thumb and the wrist. Put these two together and played twice you have dhere dhere!

Try and develop a swinging motion with your wrist, practise slowly.

Your wrist should be meeting the hand at the edge of the tabla.

  • Thanks!

  • @misteratoz

for dheredhere I swing the palm so that the area under my thumb strikes the left side of the tabla and then the right side of my palm swings in to the right side of the tabla

the dhe portion is the right side of the palm and the re portion is from the left side of the palm
