i prefer khachatryan's. the approach is softer, more meditative, and although certainly not period playing, goes in that direction. the modern approach of ehnes, and many others, is less suited to bach, in my opinion.
Ehnes plays with such a rich tone it's pure pleasure to listen to his playing Bach. His interpretation and playing of Bach's Partita No. 2 in D minor, Ciaconna is especially beautiful.
such clarity of ideas, fugal line, perfect technical control, he makes it sound plausible to perform a four part fugue on a violin with one bow and four fingers. the best. not doubt about it. look out for a cd called homage where this violinist performs on many different strads ..
I am worried about the legality of a lot of videos on youtube. Don't you think that these may be recordings which James Ehnes could be selling to fund his career? Do you think he is ok with these recordings being posted here?
I don't mean to question you specifically, but I have been wondering about this a lot lately, and would appreciate some feedback on the issue.
Certainly, I very much enjoy the recordings you post here. What do you think?
@mareoraft I post things also and wonder if posting only excerpts rather than whole movements/pieces, with links to where there can be bought/downloaded legit might be a way to introduce music and musicians to lots of people without so much damage to the motivation companies I believe they must have to produce recordings.
@mareoraft I can tell you I just went to amazon and bought the 2 cd set of Ehnes' Bach. I bought the Homage DVD but never really explored anything else Ehnes has done. This video post is a mind blowing beautiful Bach interpretation and I wanted more, so I got the 2 cd set. So I think it goes both ways, yes, it technically isn't legal but on the other hand, it gives millions a taste of something that can be had for $20 in convenient, high quality cd or MP3 form.
@tolljames whoa! you must be really good then! i always wanted to hear a perfect version of this. can you upload yours? that'd be great =] i'm so excited for this thanks a lot.
The fact I can hear VERY minor squeaks and other "mistakes" tells me that if the audio is edited at all, it's very very little.
Also excellent delicate handling of the open E string that violinists typically blast into, causing that unpleasant blaring sound. His open E sounds quite mellow and nice.
To fully appreciate him, you have to see him live. He still returns to his home to put on free master classes for students. To see a violinist of his caliber in such a small city is a real treat. His recordings of Mozart are amazing too...
to respond to the notes from rareviolintreasures, i agree the Ehnes is a wonderful fiddler, and you certainly have the right to put him on top of your all time list. i just think that's a rather sweeping statement. his Bach is better than Szeryng and Hahn? Paganini caprices better than Rabin and Kavakos? Heifetz is my overall fav, but there's plenty of music where i prefer other violinists to Heifetz.
Guys did you ever heard Rondeu Capriccioso by James? The last page (capriccio) is so fast that it seems doubtful if the performer is an human being or some kind of super-robot))))) He's just amazing, i love this performance too
I don't know if you take requests, but if you happen to have a recording of Ehnes playing the Bach chaconne i would love to hear it. If not, thank you anyways for all of the amazing music. i had not heard ehnes before, but i love his bach interpretations
Thanks! Haven't heard much of him,but what I have didn't impress me that much. Of course, an outstanding performer. Not sure, something really special.
Superb sound!!!

Ironically, just the opposite could be happening. New fans who would never have been exposed to Mr. Ehnes now have a chance through YouTube videos.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
He does succeed in making it a boring exercise.

I quite agree. It is such a shame he has absolutely no idea of how to make the musical language of Bach speak the reams that it can.

THIS is wonderful modernized Bach.

I have only Paganini Capricci with Ehnes and I love that recording. I think one of the best Capricci recordings.
I like his tone, musicality, taste, intonation, technique.
