As much as I love lasers.... when it comes to energy I am 100% for research using the SUN as a source. Not relying on something produced here on earth, when we started to use coal it seemed good idea for a moment, and look where it has take us, same with nuclear power... Just saying.

My mates and me (at the (TUe (in NL)) always laugh when this thing absorbs more power than an entire stare of the US.

Best thing is that the JET reactor already has a commercial efficiency over 100%, so the plasma fusion reactor is the only thing people. Not drenching power from a state but delivering power is the acctual goal, that's what the US has forgotten.

This fuel is so needed. Hopefully it can be sold at a cheap price for everyone once its completed. CERN and HIPER use dangerous techniques which risk the whole existence of human beings but something must be done.

Europe must build this if it want`s to keep up with the American National Ignition Facility. If ITER turns out to be far less economical than laser Fusion we need this to be ready to take over or Europe will lose out. Go HiPER!

Why do we want to keep up with US's nuclear weapons test facillity?

Whatever astrophysics and fusion energy applications come out of th 15% slice not allocated to nuclear weapons research will be available to Europe's scientiests. A commercially viable ICF reactor will look nothing like NIF.

No i understand the American system is mainly for nuclear research which i do not support either. But as history shows military projects often lead to civil projects/implications. And I saw an Arnold Schwarzenegger speech at the NIF and he was mainly talking about future energy generation using the knowledge gained at the NIF facility.

And by the way. I believe France already has something similar (but less advanced) as the NIF facility for nuclear weapon research. I don`t know what the French facility is called though.
