The one around the 0:30 mark is painful. That's when Yoshida broke his arm at the Olympics. Never put your arm out to protect from getting thrown!!!!!
No it's not. The judo created by Jigorō Kanō was a martial art.
Today's Judo is a Combat sport, adjusted to competitive fights, not a martial art like Karate, Aikido or Wushu, which in fact comes out in necessity of self-defense.

@Mr22nugget Belts don't really mean much when you think about it. I've seen little kids getting black belts in judo with one teacher and others that have had green belts and below and are more experienced in judo. I Don't think belts are accurate representation of skill level, but they are still pretty ballpark accurate.
@ismaeljaf i agree to you, i am wearing a green belt and i have won against several black belts already, some of them weren't as much of a challenge as some other people who had a lower belt than me.
it is only about experience and skills.a belt won't throw your opponent.
@ismaeljaf Technically little kids CAN'T have black belts, the highest one can get before they are an adult is purple. Judo, unlike most martial arts makes it slow to progress. I agree with what you are saying mostly though, I got second place in my state tournament as an Orange, but under normal circumstances I would probably be a green or blue... I change dojos allot becuase I move often.
@ismaeljaf yeah, that's true. Our teacher only examinates, those who win in championships. Like for the yellow belt you have to win 2 times 1-3th place in a year. For orange i'm not sure, but i think 3 times, green is 5 and ect. You can be examinated once per year. So i think every1 deserves their belts in our club :)
@Mr22nugget In my club I guarantee that our green belts would flatten your brown belts! We require our students to not just know the theory as laid out by the Kodokan but also must fight competitively & before we allow one of our students to change their belt they must first beat 10 people of that belt in a COMPETITION, not club fights but actual competition. Thats in addition to gradings. Before my coach let me wear a brown belt I had to complete a lineup of 7 brown belts one after the other.
@bizkitninja My club is in Edinburgh, Scotland. George Kerr is the owner of my club.. he is a 10th Dan and is currently the President of the British Judo Association.
@BoxingBadBoy77 honestly your best bet is to do everything lol. i was in taekwondo for 10 years, and then started judo and jujitsu, and like you can go wrong. TKD stand up. Judo to take them down, Jujitsu to wreck them once they are down. Gotta get a good mix if you really want to be able to defend yourself with everyone who trains in martial arts nowadays.
There are many scenarios that could happen in a street fight but the worst thing you could do to an experienced bjj practitioner is throw him to the ground. And if you know what you are doing you don't need much time. Traditional bjj is very practical for a street fight. Competition focused bjj schools have taking a lot away from the art I feel. Always look for the sub. Points are for pussies...
I am sorry for going off on you but i HATE when people lie and make a sport sound bad. When you do that your being rude to everyone who actually has studied judo. NOW @MerugopXXL U cant say one is better than the other they are both branches of the same thing. I think that if it really came down to the fight could very easily go any way, btw im not callin u a liar @MerugopXXL i beleive you u didnt say anything about being a champion fighter or try to make your self sound like a war god lol =)
@Bryankoenig52 no i'm not a war god but i am small for my age and do not look like a bodybuilder but i am still a good fighter and very hard to beat. Porb because all my classmates fight like dumbasses by trying to push me and hit me in my stomach, that's really dumb to do. I know school fighting is diffirent then on street but the same tactics could be as good.
weight and age category so that you would be uncontested and take home easy 1st place medals then ur studio could place higher on the ranking system. Last but not least most people that study judo consider it an art and would NEVER brag about being best in class and intimidating people at school like a bully. When you know u can defend urself u dont need to prove it. also Sutemi is rolls and falls so i dont know how u plan on scaring anyone with a cartwheel sutemi waza is wat ur tryin to say -->
@takidabossen You are full of crap to start off with the brown belt (its a belt not a band) But you cant be registered with USJF because they don't use brown belts for the junior divisions (17 and below), and the USJA requires that you have to be 14 to be promoted to a brown belt so please explain that one to me. And if for some crazy reason you have been promoted to brown belt it would have to be because your professor or coach bumped you up so you would have no competitors in your CONT--->
Judo is no doubt good , however Judo by its self is useless and won't save your ass on the street, but Judo mixed with a punching and kicking art like muay thai kickboxing will or at least gives you a better chance of survival.
@CKYguy1213 yeah you are right but on the street you can not piss about trying to get a good grip as you will get chinned . I have been doing judo for 15 years but before that was a professional light middle boxer and I know just how effective a heavy throw on concrete can be
agree! however if a judoka get thrown on the street, what do you do? show your back so i can smash it with my knees? my own opinion is that judo can be effective on the street if you take away some things from it like rather showing the back then pulling the enemy in guard! ( a bjj fighter)
@takidabossen Jodu is extremely effictive if yur good at it you can almost win fro m everyone, me in example am not very tall for my age but am tebest fighter in my class and none wants to fight me a second time, but at school it's all about impression and a simple shoulder or Sutemi can scare the other dudes. btw im 13 and i ahve brown band.
@MerugopXXL yes it is effective! i never said it wasn't but it is not as effective as bjj in a street fight. I am sure you are very good but lets face it what is the first thing you do if i would take you down on the ground?
@MerugopXXL a flying submission from the ground? maybee you could win over me at the ground or maybee you can not. I don't know. What i do know is that bjj is better than Judo in a street fight beacuse you learn how to apply the techniques in a street fight in bjj. However it is the fighter with the most experience who will win. So therefore i don't know if you can beat me at the ground, but if you can then you would be very good in ne-waza. mostley beacuse im good in all aspects in ne-waza.
@takidabossen BJJ sucks in a street fight, because of the amount of time spent on the ground. You spend that much time on the ground in a street fight, and yiou'll get your head kicked in.
you know, a lot of times people hear a music track on a video like this and ask what the track is and then buy the track. Yes, they BUY the track with money. So, WMG is actually hurting the artist here. I don't think someone would NOT buy the track and instead go to this video to listen to the music. That's just stupid. Thanks WMG for ruining it for both the videos watchers and the musicians and artists.
agreed with drmonkeybut. although fantastic as this video is it doesnt give any idea of the full scale of judo as a whole. this is a demonstration of the sport side, but as an art it is far more intense than you would imagine and those who say it wouldn't help with weapons again have probably never defended against them using judo, there are intricate sections laid out in the kodokan on how to deal with weapons. as a sport you never deal with them, as an art it is part of essential training.
El judo es el mejor deporte como defensa personal, es mas los policias, vigilantes, escoltas y militares, son enseñados, como base del judo, y subiendo.
@hellobitch1000 i'm a former bar bouncer and doorman and while I wouldn't grapple as a first choice in "situation" the clinch skills in judo have kept me safe because of the value of defensive grappling - by keeping me on my feet and in control of situations - without resorting to legally shaky strikes before absolutely needed. The clinch is probably the one range that is most neglected in most methods and it's super key - it restricts access to sophisticated ground games and can stop striking.
@simpson4563 Yes, I am a 5th dan and I have have been attacked with a knife on the street once, and judo saved my life. Those other who say no, they dont even do judo. They dont know.
I'd say you shouldn't focus on one martial art if you really WANT TO protect your life.Instead try to find some time and combine 3 martial arts like me for 1/2year,and then choose one or continue all of them(if you have time).I'm making Karate(brown belt),Krav Maga and Judo (wich I started 2 weeks ago).I think I'll continue karate because I do that since I'm 8 but anyways,if you have much time you can do more than one.sorry if I spelled something wrong,my english isn't very good!

lol, go to a training session pay for ure 2hrs then say that to one of the guys there. afterwards if u last 2hrs without crying come back and make the appropriate adjustments to ure comment.
i do mma and sanshou and while some of these throws usualy dont do a whole lot of damage on a mat it usualy gives you good position to ground n pound your oponent(or sub him ofc). However if you throw someone on a hard surface(lets say a curb or a rock) they are going to get hurt. And ofcourse the submissionholds are usefull, try not tapping out and see what happens.
All you have to do is trip and fall on the sidewalk in order to get an idea of what it would feel to be thrown down on it. I'm thinking broken bones, concussion perhaps. I don't know much about judo, but I'd like to learn it. Are leg-locks used in judo, like in sambo?
I'm pretty sure leg-locks are forbidden in Judo. It used to be allowed tho. And in some dojo's they train it, but not with the purpose for it to be used in competitions/matches, just for fun really. :)
Good luck learning judo, you'll find out it's a great sport! I've been doing it for 9 years myself now :)
but that doesn't even amount to how hard you can be thrown in judo . If you fall and not stop the fall obviously it will hurt but depend on strength, body weight and speed the damage created in the throw can be multipied many times!
not sure about the leg locks but we learn a great deal of arm locks, head locks and hold downs
Yep and it also depends on how you throw the person and how they land in my experience many people who dont do a martial art or body contact type of sport are really easy to floor you can literally pull em over with one hand and most of the times theyll do something stupid like stick an arm behind or infront of them to lessen the fall anyway i try to keep control of the head when i throw people and use throws with lots of body control as to not hurt the person.
BJJ is a derivitave of kodokan judo. "The art began with Mitsuyo Maeda (aka Conde Koma, or Count Combat in English), a Japanese expert judoka" he brought it to brazil and they made more emphasis on the ground aspects of judo. jiu jitsu -> judo -> BJJ.
This is true. That being said, there is much more emphasis on ground fighting in BJJ. As a result, there are certain throws in Judo which would result in an ippon, but could also allow an opponent to get into a decent position following the throw (or take your back during the attempt). As a result, take downs are emphasized in a different way in BJJ. It's less important how you get to the ground, as long as, you do.
Guys i just started Judo tonight and i love it, my inspirations...Fedor Emelianenko...Karo Parisyan.... and Kazuhiro Nakamura for that haircut he had when he fought Lyoto Machida...I want that haircut.

Boxing, you punch one part of the body at a time. Muay Tai you punch or kick one part or 2 at the same time. BJJ is can be brutal no doubt.
But, with Judo Nage Waza you punch the whole body at one time.

A martial art is only as good as the artist who puts the time and dedication into it

hahahahaha Judo with disturbed hahahahaha Judo is cool but it doesn't fit at all.
Karascool 3 years ago
It kind of does. It seems like it wouldn't with the whole "gentle way" thing but in practice it does. Judo can be a very brutal experience.
Quixotic311 3 years ago
the gentle way refers more to life off of the matt as a whole
danjack17 2 years ago
lol, go to a training session pay for ure 2hrs then say that to one of the guys there. afterwards if u last 2hrs without crying come back and make the appropriate adjustments to ure comment.
danjack17 2 years ago
Trust me I've practiced more than 2 hours of judo and have been thrown from mat to mat many times. It is not disturbing so shut your trap idiot

i do mma and sanshou and while some of these throws usualy dont do a whole lot of damage on a mat it usualy gives you good position to ground n pound your oponent(or sub him ofc). However if you throw someone on a hard surface(lets say a curb or a rock) they are going to get hurt. And ofcourse the submissionholds are usefull, try not tapping out and see what happens.
jogra028 2 years ago
Tapping out to a choke that is... not tapping to a jointlock is a very bad idea...
jogra028 2 years ago
by throwing someone on a hard surface you can easily knock out the oppoent because of the force created in the throw . .
I try to go gentle on people in a fight for this reason
kisukes221 2 years ago
All you have to do is trip and fall on the sidewalk in order to get an idea of what it would feel to be thrown down on it. I'm thinking broken bones, concussion perhaps. I don't know much about judo, but I'd like to learn it. Are leg-locks used in judo, like in sambo?
blackrussian9 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure leg-locks are forbidden in Judo. It used to be allowed tho. And in some dojo's they train it, but not with the purpose for it to be used in competitions/matches, just for fun really. :)
Good luck learning judo, you'll find out it's a great sport! I've been doing it for 9 years myself now :)
BurtIsTheWord 2 years ago
but that doesn't even amount to how hard you can be thrown in judo . If you fall and not stop the fall obviously it will hurt but depend on strength, body weight and speed the damage created in the throw can be multipied many times!
not sure about the leg locks but we learn a great deal of arm locks, head locks and hold downs
kisukes221 2 years ago
yeah you can do leglocks
JcnoProductions 2 years ago
erm, nope!
der1mit2den3haaren 2 years ago
actually no. one of the first things they teach you in judo is how to fall :)
griefer1 2 years ago
no...they were forbidden for being too dangerous...
judoka713 2 years ago
yeah leg locks are allowed

The best is in subway's stairs.
zqewkl 2 years ago
Yep and it also depends on how you throw the person and how they land in my experience many people who dont do a martial art or body contact type of sport are really easy to floor you can literally pull em over with one hand and most of the times theyll do something stupid like stick an arm behind or infront of them to lessen the fall anyway i try to keep control of the head when i throw people and use throws with lots of body control as to not hurt the person.

waterballer420 3 years ago
If it wasn't for judo, there would be no gracie jiu-jitsu or bjj. Judo is the deadlist art for sport or mma when modified.
aquin520 3 years ago 4
judo came from jiu jitsu. BJJ came from jiu jitsu.. they just emphasise different aspects of wrestling.
irai1984 3 years ago
BJJ is a derivitave of kodokan judo. "The art began with Mitsuyo Maeda (aka Conde Koma, or Count Combat in English), a Japanese expert judoka" he brought it to brazil and they made more emphasis on the ground aspects of judo. jiu jitsu -> judo -> BJJ.
havedeath 3 years ago 3
This is true. That being said, there is much more emphasis on ground fighting in BJJ. As a result, there are certain throws in Judo which would result in an ippon, but could also allow an opponent to get into a decent position following the throw (or take your back during the attempt). As a result, take downs are emphasized in a different way in BJJ. It's less important how you get to the ground, as long as, you do.
