@Bavgirls Scotty was my Mothers fiance at the time he died they live in Long Island. He was also to be the love of her life, although thankfully she met and married my dad. Gloria's step he wrote for my Mom Gloria Gabriel she was a broadway dancer, and is still a dancer. She has some memorabillia, but mostly just memories
Just finished reading "Jade Visions....the life and music of Scott LaFaro".......a tremendous read for anyone interested in this amazing man.....a must for any bass player or anyone who needs to see what determination is required to reach that level........also for the comments from fellow bass players and those who met or worked with him. He was a "one off"..........he knew it too !!!............Seems he knew also that his life would be short.!!
Damn, I wish the camera guy would have just moved the camera down a little, so I could see his righthand technique better, because I'm really curious about it... His lefthand is kinda awkward though, it moves so much... you should say that at the speed at which he plays, one would actually want it to make only the necessery movement, instead of letting it fly all around, especially in the lower positions... Interesting clip :)
He used to play piano, i think thats the explanmation why his left hand technique is so "awkward". I think he switched during his college years, so thats impressive to pickup an instrument so quickly and be good at it. I just wish I could have listened to him playing piano.
he majored in clarinet in college and switched over to bass because it was a requirement to learn a string instrument. check out the biography written about him. "jade visions: the life and music of scott lafaro." you can start to break him down as a player when you hear first hand accounts from other players. he was playin stuff that no one else was playin, so maybe his technique isnt ackward but better.
This is absolutely amazing. Scott LaFaro is so wonderful on "Sunday At The Village Vanguard". His solos are absolutely beautiful. Easily my most favorite jazz bassist.
Thank you for this awesome clip! I agree it's too short, but thanks for letting me know something showing his talent in action exists. I've heard so much about his genius. BRAVO Scott!!! Groove on keeping the Angels happy in heaven!!!
This is very cool to see Lafaro playing, truely one of the greatest. Hope to see more. This is one of the cool things about this site, being able to share stuff like this.
(I cannot insert the link here) In Google : scott lafaro beacon for jazz bassists ... there you can find another very short excerpt of his playing in the Richie Kamuca Quintet. I learned there is a one hour VHS tape of that session, but I guess it's extremely difficult to find.
Would not have known of him if had it not been for Jack Bruce turning me on to his music.

I owe my sanity to your mother. I love Gloria's Step. I calms me when I'm upset and lifts
me up when I'm down. I have to hear it everyday. God bless and thank God for your Mom...

One of the saddest stories in music history. Given a few more years, LaFaro could have been a household name.

Yeah, it's a shame his life was cut way short by a car accident too. He never had a chance to really get off the ground, sad to say...
