  • Send me your beats!

  • my song just went a few notches up, sounds a lot more professional thanks!! XD

  • when i try and select a sidechain on the fruity limiter it doesnt come up with channels to select why is this it only seems to work on the master but that doesnt really seem to have any effect on the track itself ARGHHH

  • @relentlessaddict98jm It's because you have the limiter on the wrong track.

  • finally someone who got to the point!! thank you.

  • i love this guy

  • how do you keep effects on the sound uve used with out it interfering with kick?

  • 2:20 !

"... now we are pumping... "

Best phrase in this video :D

  • @lighthunter235 LOL HAAAA

I just heard him I'm still LMAO 3AM!

  • I did this on a couple beats on my channel check em out

  • is it not overkill putting a compressor on every channel you want to put sidechaining on? In Because in some electronic music you might need to sidechain 5-10 synths. Is this still better then using a peak controller and linking it to the volume fader, or even the gain?

  • i love these videos

  • I want it as a automation clip but it doesnt work! If i use sidechain it will sidechain the whole song and i just want to use i at some parts. how do i do??

  • Thanks for this, really helpful.

  • LOL AT 0:00 EPIC VOCODER

    "EF EHL SHTUDEEO GOOROO" HAAHAHA

  • NOW WE'RE PUMPING

  • Check out my tutorial on 3 methods of sidechaining

    /watch?v=ev5HtCpB_7o

  • Excellent tutorial.

  • lol' now were pumping"

if this way is too hard for some of you guys you can just do this.

hook up whatever you want to side chain to a mixer channel. then add the effect gross beat. once on gross beat there will be two sections. leave the top one on empty and on the bottom one, click the one that says side chain.

  • I had a problem understanding how sidechaining the kick to a different channel effects the pad sound, and its not too clear that you have to route the pad audio to the sidechain channel for it to have an effect, or have I done something wrong?.

  • Back again with another question! haha XD When i do sidechain my drums to my pads/synths, the effects on those pads/synths (delay, reverb, filters, etc.) are applied to my snares/kicks causing a mass amount of chaos especially when mixing down tracks. Any advice on how to fix/adjust things at all?

  • Tudai

  • i can i make a reverse sidechain? When the peak controll sound the compressor not sound and viceversa? is possible?

  • Awesome!

  • Wait, i dont understand, what are the benefits of using sidechaining as opposed to just using an LFO?

  • @thukon - Perfect synchronization with your percussion, and percussion waveform following. LFO is a blunt effect in comparison.

  • @imageline for some reason the when i try and select a channel to sidechain it doesnt com up with sidechain to this track only. Also when i tell the channel to sidechain (in my case the kick to the synth) and then try and select the channel in the fruity limiter as you did at 2:00 theres nothing there to select and i have no idea why can you help me?

  • @thukon once you try both, sidechaining will always sound more authentic. the sidechain isnt a perfectly consistent modulation, which is what makes it so cool.

  • Is it possible to link as many tracks as you want to the track you're sidechaining? I was going to try it but I'm nervous I might butcher my entire track eh. I want to link up to 10 synth channels to a kick and snare drum if that helps explain my issue a bit better? haha

  • @cudi1is3god - You can't hurt anything permanently. Yes you can link as many sidechain tracks as you want.

  • @cudi1is3god Just save a new version mate and you are fine :)

  • Yes, fruity limiter is also a compressor... *yay!* And a gate, bonus! *BONUS GATE!*

    LOL

  • that chord progression could be used perfectly with Edge of Glory by Lagy Gaga.

  • Miles Diego - Disaster Original mix

  • Watch My Video For 3 Easy Methods On How To Sidechain

    /watch?v=ev5HtCpB_7o

  • AHH! YES! I got it now.

  • can you sidechain with Maximus?

  • Gracias uuffff q buen video

  • thanks for the tutorial :) and yeah u should continue on that tune, has a good vibe to it ;)

  • I came here because Benn Jordan from The Flashbulb liked and favorited this video... now I'm asking, it's The Flashbulb using FL Studio?

  • hey can you make a tutorial for mixing and mastering ? that would be great!!

  • @jmarquies agree :)

  • thanks pal!!! all my tunes done on fl9 have sounded a bit basic but ive just watched your vid an made a beautiful sidechain within 10 minutes ! nice one

  • lol bonus gate

  • Thank you so much! All the user-created videos are very misleading an unclear. This is so easy, it makes me feel stupid for not catching on sooner!!

  • Doesn't this mean you can LFO anything. Holy fucking shit. I always wanted to do that.

  • I kind of want to do the opposite. When I do double kick (from the drums) It usually causes the drums and cymbals to duck in and out with the bass. What's the best way to eliminate this while keeping the kick now and thumpy sounding?

  • How do you do this with third party VSTs? For example, I'm using the Softube CL1B, which has a selector for external sidechaining. Doesn't seem to do anything in FL.

  • i finally get it! Taken me hours to figure it out. Before, I didn't understand the difference between an audio route and a side chain so i looked at Mr Special song which comes with FL and tried to find out what was used and realise now that the instruments are routed to the labelled sub groups and then those are routed to the master so it's clearly not a side chain and the fact you can adjust the send volume too whereas a side chain you can't (correct me if I'm wrong!), 100% confirms this :)

  • @Tozzywozzy - From the manual - In FL Studio, there are two independent audio paths initiated when one Mixer track is linked to another using the Track Send / Sidechain Enable Switch.

    1. A regular send path that responds to the send volume knob and is audible on the destination Mixer track.

    2. A sidechain path that is unaffected by the send volume knob and is NOT audible on the destination Mixer track UNLESS it is picked up by a plugin with (sidechain) input capabilities.

  • is it possible to create a side chain bus?

Like using a mixer track as an aux send and have a fruity limiter in that track alone and then send any instrument I needs sidechaining?

  • LOL at the end ''is this ducking ?'' nice Guru. your tutorials are always fun and easy to learn. thx a lot

  • is sidechaining the same as aux send?

  • @lyricalgza - no. Aux send is an audio path on a mixer and sidechaining is a concept.

  • @imageline Thanks, I kinda get it. FL Studio's mixer would be 100x better if it had aux send don't you think?

  • @lyricalgza - It has (the equivalent) of AUX sends already. Infact far superior, you can route any track to any other track.

  • @imageline Great! Thanks again Guru.

  • how to do something like the opposite of this? i mean lowering the volume whenever the kick hits.....

  • Is it normal im missing a bunch of knobs and I dont have the sidechain option, only two curve options

  • nice and funny video :)

anyway, i was having troubles time ago trying to sidechain stuff using Wavearts Trackplug. This plugin (eq+2 comps+gate+limiter) has an "external" ducking source selector, though i never managed to get the sidechaining sound affect the compressor. I looked for the pugin's documentation, only to find out that every DAW setup but the fl studio one is covered in it.

    What am i doing wrong?

  • how to choose multiple sidehain source?

  • I did exactly what you did in the vid, but the only thing that changed is now my kick sounds distorted.

  • 2:19 Now, we are pumpin! :-))

  • Yeah! thank you!

  • IS there a way to create the side chain sound

    without hearing the kick?

    Nice upload thoo

i didnt know Limiter could do that

  • @AdisaStrictlyBidness - Yes and it's explained/shown in the video. 1:30

  • @AdisaStrictlyBidness

u can do it with The Fruity Love Philter ! Search on YT : Sidechain Love Philter or something like that ! :D

  • I saw on zircon's "Just Hold On" a Sidechain sampler that triggers the effect on the song's chords without the kick's signal at the beggining of the song, how do I do that, how do I make that sampler?

  • @Angel090890 just set kick volume to 0% :)

  • fuck yea! no more messing with peak controller

  • yes pump it! lol! Im so excited

  • Now we'r pumpin'! :D

  • is this better then using peak controller and compressor?

  • @KINGxUxTUBE - It's the 'usual' way of doing it. Whatever sounds good is good :)

  • Is it possible to sidechain compress with other compressor insted of fruity limiter?

  • @sergiofrias25 - Sure, if it accepts multiple inputs.

  • @imageline ive'd tried with waves C1 but it only shows one input...

  • Comment removed

  • Hey man, nice tutorial

What recording program do you use?

  • . i recently just started making beats got em on my channel, checkem if you like :) any constructive advice or tips also appreciated, got that oldskool feeling

idno.. opinions keep me motivated & helps me craft and progress :)

  • Hello there nice tut just got a few questions:

    1. My kick is on Channel 1

2 My Bass is on Channel 2

I side chain my bass to the kick or kick to the bass what ever it was i forgot,

But All the Fx and EQ and Plugins i am using for my bass Route to my kick??

Say if i have some reverb on my bass (channel 2)

it will also go to my kick (channel 1) so my damn kick has reverb?!

    cheers

  • my fl studio keeps adding a crackling sound to my rendered track how do i stop this please help

  • i like the sound the gross beat gives me when i use the gate fade to sidechain. but when i export the sound it doesnt come out sidechained its all messed up. i dont know what to do about it. any help would be much appreciated?

  • @TonyCassette

    Free version of Gross Beat?

  • @DJApeCat no its bought. its weird when it does it cuz the only way i can get my project out without it messing up is record it into edison then save the edison sample. i just get tired of using peak controller and this method taught in this tut doesnt work for me for some reason.

  • @DJApeCat no its paid for. what i have to do is record into edison for it not to mess up. i can show u some examples if you wanna hear exactly what its doing.

  • @TonyCassette - Why not ask in Looptalk?

  • This a very useful tutorial, the method is great and it works...xD

  • Does this FL Studio Guru have a Producing Name for any of his music? I wanna check his stuff out =)

  • nop, no work , i try but... no get it :S

  • 2nd there will be more talents who will show their talent to world, 3rd, youll compensate your free copy expenses through advertising sponsors ;) Because price of fl studio makes me do not use it at all or use cracked program.... I talk from user position ;)THe number of FL studio USERS should increase FAST... And more sponsors would like to show their products in your advertising window ;)

  • Hey Image line guys... You made excelent program..... After newtone is going out it will be cool program ;) I would advice to add non electric samples and generators to it.. and it would be as universal as all other soft together... Now i would like to say my idea about how make your soft more popular ;) 1) Make free version and not free version 2) Make Advertisement window in free version, and show Advertisement... two things will hapen..... 1st there will be more users of fl. CONTINUED....

  • Bonus gate!!

  • IF I mute the kick on some parts of song,Fruty Limiter Sidechain do not work? How to mute a kick and sideshain do the same job with unmuted kick?

  • Hi Guys!

Want to listen to som music whit sidechain inside?

    check out my Song.

    Thanks!

  • Ahh nevermind had to change to Comp. Lol.

  • Why does my limiter not look like yours? :3

  • thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!!! <3

  • wher iits the peakcontroll????

  • You can't do this in FL 8 with the limiter , or am i wrong?

i mean exactly like the way in this vid.

  • @homerboy77 this sidechaining method was added in fl9 i think

  • @Lotheareon okey thanks :P

  • frickin awsome man!

  • best utube channel ever

  • omg gracias por el tutorial muy usado en la musica electronica general...saludos

  • thanks for the fast reaction!! checkout my new vid.. i used ur tip :P

  • instead of limiter i use 'peak controller'.. same result right?? or am i wrong

  • @djkoen15 - You can. It may not be exactly the same tho. Depends on the audio material. You can also use the filter envelopes in Love Philter synced to tempo.

  • @djkoen15 you`re right :-)

  • yeah right, good tut, thanks imageline :-)

  • and ive been running mad circles in fl 8 these couple years to get the same side chain / silent side chains that you just got in seconds :|

i guess i should spend some time actually reading up instead of experimenting all day

  • THIS SOUNDS REALY NICE. JUST NEED A REALY NICE KICK FOR IT! :)

  • Thank you sooo much

  • This makes the output crackle and pop all the time. changing the threshold/gain doesnt change anything.

  • @Elementerials - Try downloading the project linked in the video information and comparing it to your set-up. Something must be set incorrectly.

  • @Elementerials change your bitrate in ASIO. If it buffers to a low bitrate, make it higher. The buffer will take a fraction longer, but there will be no popping and crackling will be gone. It should default at 512 Samples, change it up to 768 and see how that works for you.

  • @Elementerials

    Thats your soundcard

  • HAHA! At 1:15, "Bonus Gate!" Lol!

  • @1one3three2two I know, this guy's pretty funny. He reminds me of Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords. Do you know is he a Kiwi or Aussie?

  • Goodbye X-Y Controller-sidechaining, hello easy mixer channel-sidechaining!

  • Hey, novice here. What genres is sidekicking generally used for besides Trance/Dance? Are there common or maybe even quirky but cool uses for sidechaining other than for making synths pump?

  • @Darkozl - Ducking music levels under a voice-over on videos. Subtle (non-pumping) sidechain can open up a mix. There is a point at which you can't hear it working but the mix sounds better. Also sidechaining is a generic term, it doesn't mean 'compression'. It can be any sidechain signal controlling any effect (that accepts sidechains). Possibilities are limitless.

  • @imageline Thanks for the quick and informative response. Very help tut as well.

  • @Darkozl I like to sidechain reeverb on a snare when I make house.

  • 1:14 tat was funny :D

  • Clear, simple & short tutorial as always :)! Good job, thanks alot!

  • HI I USED TO CONNECT MY CONTROLLER TO FL 9 BUT NOW I DOESNT MAKE ANY PITCH BENDINGS I TRIED EVERYTHING I EVEN RESETED FL STUDIO IN CASE I MESSED THINGS UP BUT IT DIDNT FIX IT , THE MIDI IN LIGHT SIGNAL FROM FL TURNS ON WHEN I MOVE THE PITCH WHEEL BUT THE KNOB IN THE WRAPPER WONT MOVE AT ALL ...

  • @HELLRAISER657 - Sounds like something you should ask in our techsupport forum - Google "Image-Line technical support"

  • @HELLRAISER657 It doesn't work when caps lock is on.

  • @SillyEagle1992 THANKS MAN IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY !!!

  • @HELLRAISER657 Always glad to help. :D

  • how do u record sidechaining when recording becuase the sidechain lasts for a couple of seconds then ends

  • @BeanieBeat - It sounds like you are in pattern mode, switch to song mode and lay out your patterns in the Playlist.

  • Ok. So what if i want to link the kick to a pad with effects such as reverb and delay, but i only want the kick to be sent through the compressor?

  • @yankees529 - Use several Mixer tracks.

  • If you need to sidechain many synths with only one kick, do you need to ad one limiter/compressor) on each mixer track? Isn't the peak controller easier in that case?

  • very informative. Helped me a lot.

    Thx

  • There is a problem! if you mute the kick, everything goes back to its normal position. unless there is a solution for that!

  • For some reason I don't have the option to sidechain to the track only...

I don't want to hear the kicks in my song....any help?

  • @babiinene - What version of FL Studio are you using? Sidechains were introduced in version 9.

  • @imageline

    I"m using version 9

  • Cool. But i just use Sidekick4 xD

  • Same thing here!

i also want the same thing that zirco had in his demo song, but i don't know how

but this tutorial has been really helpfull!

  • Hi Imageline ,

I just wondered is it not possible to mute the kick track but still hear the effect ive tried this and it doesn't work i tried muting the kick track and putting the volume of the kick track to 0db but the effect dissapears , this is so i have a sidechain kick track in my tracks which is not heard and a different kick to use so i can still have the ducking effect whilst a kick is not playing. Thanks

  • @Arnieuk1 I'm getting the same problem. zircon's demo song has the feature but it doesn't seem to work in my songs.

  • @Elementerials

    Hi Mate

Apparently you have to disable the kick send to the master and it will work , because the kick won't be heard

  • @Arnieuk1 wont work. the phase effect disappears

  • @Elementerials have you turned the send level down?

  • @Arnieuk1 - Deselect the send to master of the Kicks Mixer track. As noted in the video.

  • @Arnieuk1

It'd be SOOOO much easier if they had PreFader and PostFader effect sends... Really a shame they don't have pre and post sends... It's nice to send 100% of the effect with the click of a button. Ugh.

  • And this is why i chose FL studio.......

    I bloody love you Image-line !

  • i used the peak controller method to side-chain for at least two years, and in the past two or three months i've almost exclusively used this method. it's much more direct, precise, it has fewer latency issues -- and it is WAY MORE VISUAL, you can actually SEE the reduction caused by the side-chain, which i love.

i still use the peak controller, but mostly only to control delays and reverbs or any plugins aside from the fruity limiter.

    great tutorial.

i encourage you all to use this method!

  • very very well explained!! thanks bunch!

  • awesome, now i am use limiter for the sidechain more function :) and..

  • killer

  • and a gate bonus :))) Damn, that one was funny :D good work done here, Guru!

  • thankkk u sooo muchh

  • How's the use of it with VST's with sidechain?

  • How's the use of it with VST's with sidechain?

  • awesome this is great =)

  • can u make a video about the same but with compresor?

  • This is so helpful :D Keep`em coming :D

  • thnx

  • The peak controller is more easy.

  • It is easy and I use it a lot. Don't know about 'more' easy tho. However note the peak-controller may not catch the fastest transients while the Fruity Limiter (compressor section) always will. The compressor is faster and more flexible.

  • oh my, this is waaaaay easier than the way ive been doing it.
