@keepitacrime : Origanally done with a juno 106 , split oscillation between thirds and fifiths stick that through part stereo chorus and flanger and u have the mighty haunting sound.

@testacorsa150 well you must have lived in a cave for the last 29 years because this song is probably the most sampled song ever by dj all over the world and it came 5 years before the brazilian lol this is years ahead of its time !!
Yeah I've had the pleasure of being 2 metres from the stage just over 4 years ago, while they did this song on the B&W Tour! Was pretty much exactly the same as this one: Incredible doesn't begin to describe it!
Both were good versions, but you really need to check out the original album version to hear something special...
Eddy Duffy's a supreme bassist - But NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING compared to the mighty Derek Forbes on the original!! He remains the bass player to end all bass players!
@JohnoEAL yes yes totally agree...derek is ...up there!!!but j have to say it eddie duffy is an awesome bass player....pity ,he's no longer in the band!!!
Bass and Keyboards were Instrumental in giving Simple Minds there brilliant sound...Bass is okay but keyboards will never be anywhere near the standards you would come to hear when Mick was at the realm...
spot on, session musician version, the lead synth sound is pants, needs layering as sounds like a cheap kareoke version in parts. like the new wah guitar bit though in the verses though.
at first I was like, well the keyboards are not that predominate in this song, but then I listened to it and realized he needs alot of work, you're right.
Agree on both of these comments to an extent. Especially hearing Mick MacNeil playing this with Four Good Men. I'd like the synth lead to be stronger and have an up to date sound.
But to give Andy Gillespie credit, its's probably down to him that this track finally got played live. Although Mick Macneil seems to think all the songs from S&F/SFC were played live.
Even though I prefer the original, was this version ever released on an album, or was it live only?

Uhhh they nearly lost it after the break at 2:40 :)
I have completely fallen in love with this theme - it´s so beautiful!
I heard this for the first time yeasterday, when i finally got around to digging around in the early Simple minds stuff - and what a treasure i found.
It reminds me of the Brazilian by Genesis
Maybe we should start a list of great instrumentals, by great bands?
1. Simple Minds - Theme for great cities
2. Genesis - The Brazilian
Who´s got the next one?? :)

The keyboard player looks like a bored barman and Mel looks like he is just going through the motions. As for the bass - no comment required.

Its not a casio, but a juno106, wth a nice analog sound,
just a great delat fx reverb miss...

The keyboard is wack. Really lets it down. Sounds like he just swictched on the Casio and played an awful preset.
Otherwise excellent.
