To be honest, it just came natural to him. What you must not do is put your dog in too early. He could get hurt and put off. Put him after less dangerous prey first. I would not put him to rats until at the earliest a year old.
100% hunting dogs them Patterdale's i have one and it loves rabbets and birds ?? i hope one day it brings back a bird with blond hair and big tits lol haha
Ratting is so much more humane than traps or poison. It's quick, efficient and natrual. One of the businesses I liase with is a recycling firm and they have constant problems with rats, (it goes with the territory) I want to suggest using ratting terriers, though I don't know if anybody does it professionally.
hehe great video. we recently got mice and i was shocked when our English Staff caught one! i didnt even know dogs caught rats and mice before ours done it. its caught 5 so far...lol 5 mice! i think they enjoy it, everytime we go into the kitchen now i can see his hunting instincts kick in...ready for another kill :D
typical patterdale mate good job. do you use him for rabbits?iv got 2 use them for rats squirrels and rabbits, should have a vid to upload this week,i take them trapping squirrel there usefull tools!! good vid
i didnt know at that time that patterdales allready have bulldog blood ^^ many breeders in the 19th century have crossed bulldog with a variety of terriers to make them stronger, bigger and more courage (i mean for hunting and not for dog fighting!)... today every terrier have a little bit bulldog dna not only bullterriers like pit bull!
@liljames2k yes they do bt a lot ov the time they tryed to breed it bk owt ov them like the did with plummer terriers cos they just end up to big, i no ov a few ppl breeding patterdales with pitbull gud dogs just to big, but in irland iv erd theat they breed staffis with jack russels then bk to jack russels for the jaw strenth 4 hunting fox
I THINK it would have been about this time, mate. It was after the shooting season had finished. The farmer had left the maize in over winter so that's maybe why it's a bit unusual. It was a rat magnet!
He's given up on rabbits a bit now cos he knows they're too fast! But he goes after anything he gets the scent of. Moles, water hens, phesants, weasels, mink..........LOL
gr8 catch...i was gutted wen my wee pup died he would hav been a wee cracker..my ex bf took the pup out b4 he got his jags behind my bak..out in the rain n shit n he died a few weeks later..how dumb was he....is any1 breedin any patterdales in scotland as i would like another xxxx
Recently bought a Patterdale at 7 weeks, she's 8 weeks now but is a strong feisty little bugger..can't wait til she's had all her jabs and I can take her out.
No, I'd never dream of takin her out yet, just looking forward to getting her out and about you know...she's absolutley fearless though, for a dog this age I've never seen anything like her - I've normally had Borders and they've been brilliant but thought I'd go for a Patty this time, love her to bits but sometimes she like to use her teeth a little too much...haha
Did the rat taste nice ?

DON'T put her to rats yet!!!!! They are vicious and have big teeth!!!
I'd wait until she's a year old. If she gets bitten young, it could put her off for life.

anyway my dog is a patterdale and he cant rat for shit! how do u teach him!
maskon94 4 years ago
Didn't have to teach him, he just did it. He's been a natural born killer from day one. Guess it's in the breeding.
