The name "leopard" comes from lion (leo) and panther (pardus), both in Greek. And since leopards and jaguars are different species (cannot produce viable offspring), how then are there black leopards unless they can occur naturally? Black jaguars are just much more common than black leopards.

It's a jaguar, there are markings inside the rosettes. That's not a true panther either. It's just a melanistic jaguar or leopard, most likely another jaguar.

Those are both Jaguars. Some are black like the one in this video but most have the spotted pattern.

It's a jaguar, there are markings inside the rosettes. That's not a true panther either. It's just a melanistic jaguar or leopard, most likely another jaguar.

Disculpa mi sinceridad pero tus conocimientos de animales son pobres, no se trata de un leopardo y una pantera, sino de dos jaguares, uno negro y otro moteado, la pantera como especie no existe, no es sino un jaguar negro, y el leopardo vive en Africa y tiene otro tipo de piel y es mas esbelto. El jaguar vive en America. saludos.

No actually its you who needs to read.Go to any zoo and ask or any expert on big cats infact any web site.For some strange reason you WANT black leopard or Black Jaguar to be different than the regular spotted but they are not.
The "big" black jaguar that killed the snake was simply a big male no bigger no stronger than another male his age with spots. If you want to think that Black leopards/Jaguars are bigger and stronger by all means go ahead but they are not its SAME EXACT cat just black.

No they are not. Perhaps if bred in captivity over yrs to bigger parents but all things being equal in the wild color means NOTHING and they are same size. ONLY if they come from different areas are they different Asian Lions are smaller than African Lions thus Asian white lions are smaller than African lions but NOT smaller than regular Asian lion.

Some of these animals are becoming so rare due to poaching tht the only safe place for them is in a Zoo, it wud be crueler to let them out into the wild after they hav been brought up in there. They wudnt last long x

A panther merely refers to any big cat and any black cat is either a black leopard or a black jaguar. there is no panther species.

Those are both jaguars, Panthera onca. The black one (panther) is a melanistic phase, while the normal looking one has normal melanin content in its fur. The title is wrong. A puma is Puma concolor.

A spotted jaguar and a black jaguar. I think it is ignorant to call the black jaguar a black panther because a black panther could mean ANY melanistic cat with the scientific name "Panthera".

I really don't believe they're fighting, nor do I believe they intend to kill eachother. It looks like, perhaps, a first meeting of a possible breeding pair. You can expect a little hostility when there's a new comer, and I'm sure the zoo staff was on hand to make sure it didn't get out of control.
Or, perhaps, 2 cage mates are just having an unfriendly day. It happens. They are felines, after all.

2 jaguars... leopard and jaguar both can have melanism, but I don't think they will put a Panther with a Jaguar, and the yellow is a jaguar, because these pigments are too big to be a leopard ;)
