HI, I have a 14 yr old Paint that may have Shivers and what I have learned to do is Functional Centering, a body work that includes light touch and release, tapping his hind leg from thigh down, one hand on the inside and one hand on the outside of hte leg, tapping gently all the way down, then I tap in the indent along the thigh bone before i ask him to pick up his leg. Seems to get his body aware of where I am, that he has hindquarters and can lift each hind leg normally without shivering.
PS: if you are able to, get a good muscle biospy and don't hesiate, so there is no wondering or misdiagnosis. I went for some time with my percheron with vets thinking it was epsm. I had her at new bolton too. Muscle biospsy definitively diagnosed her with EMND with no signs of epsm in the biospy. High fat diets help, but don't really slow down the progression of EMND.
Im hoping to share some information about EMND, and horses misdiagnosed with shivers and epsm. I lost my first horse last spring to EMND. One thing that is commonly misunderstood especially in america is proper nutrition for draft horses. High fat will compensate for lack of nutrients and help but is not the root cause. Nor is this just a problem innate in draft horses. I'm not a vet but had extensive experience with this condition with my horse and want to help in anyway I can. Pls messege me.
I am currently treating a Belgian mare with EPSM symptoms with a high-fat low-sugar/carb diet. It usually takes 4 to 6 months of the new diet to make a notable diffence in the recovery of the horse. I wish you and your filly all the best. Perserverence and patience are the key to a disease like this. Stay positive.
We are currently dealing with a gelding that is having severe problems in the hindquarters and was diagnosed with stringhalt. However after countless hours of research, I believe the horse has stringhalt in the left rear, and seems to be suffering from shivers in the right rear. This geldings case of shivers seems to be very severe and advanced, compared to your filly and others I have seen. I wish you and your filly the best, and Thank You for sharing. Please keep us posted on her progress.
Thank you,seems to be worse still this morning! Will persevere with the low carb diet as i know it will take a while to start working.All the reports i have read say that is a slow progressive disease but it seems to be getting worse by the day in this case

In Australia I think we call that wobbles, or a horse with this problem is called a wobbler.

ummmm my horse has both EPSM and EMND.,, EMND requiers increased vitamin E and the EPSM requiers the increased fat and lowered carbohydrates...
I hope she improves as well as my horse is.

does this horse have HYPP? i own a couple horses that are HYPP postive and have the same symptoms.

@tellago I had only heard of HYPP in QH's. Specifically only in horses that trace back to Impressive. Has it been identified in other breeds as well?
