Richy, try Wondertouch Illusion 3. I think there is older free version. The first illusion was about 5Mb with basic effect library. Very easy to use particle effects app, looking great.

you can get effects footage from detonationfilms. Some are free and others you have to pay for. Also videocopilot and fxhome do sets of HD footage but you do have to pay.

the 'explode' anything tutorial is one way to blow things up in Vegas if you don't have software like After effects. Just a bit time consuming but effective for a very quick explosion. I used it in the 'Stop the Bills' vid to blow the postman up hehehehe :)
