It depends on you! Dance ability may be over-rated. It's like many physical skills, get a good teacher, go slow to start, build the required muscle memory, listen, watch, refine/correct and practice. Keep moving to the music, and you will develop your dance ability .
I could tell just you I do not want to add to the confusion out about step counts. The fact is we dance in 3-beat segments!!! So ALL STEPS & WEIGHT changes have to be within 3-beats of music. So, the count that can be applied easily & be on time with a random stepping partner is 8/6/3 =[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] / [1&2, 3&4, 5,6] / [1,2,3]. Who counts in social dancing [what I do] once they have trained themselves to dance to the music in 3-beats? Counting beginning is most helpful in learning the dance.
I'll bet that most Asians don't know that either... then, I have not seen a billion or so of them. What have noticed in the Chicago metro areas is that "better dancers" work at being better dancers! Also, I have seen the good, the bad, the OK, the professional dancers and I have no evidence or proof that ANY ethnic group has a lock on ANY category of dance ability. What I do know for sure is you can always find a small sample of people to match any behavior. But it proves nothing gobally.
