Vincent Price becomes the perfect voice of Poe's poetry! Makes one wish he recorded everything written by Edgar Allen in auditory form! Likewise for Terence Stamp! If Shakespeare had this voice on the stage, it would still compete well with any "modern" entertainment currently being made!
More than a movie. This creates true cinematic horror, revealing the artists' personal fears within the genre! Fellini's weirdest imagery. Terence Stamp portraying an angst ridden Christlike man. Role of a lifetime! And the devil presented as a playful child temptress, reveals brilliance beyond almost any contrived "classic". No this is undoubtedly cinema's greatest horror montage. This cuts to the bone, wrapping fiction with the artists' own necessity to work out their personal demons. Epitomy.
Never f***ing mind the distended French version with dubbing, subtitles. Jane Fonda, a talented spoiled bitch, introduces a revealing gothic envy of her authentically altruistic brother, Peter, suggesting incest and bestiality. Alain Delon presents himself(!) as an egotistical mercenary, who can get any woman he wants, yet looses his conscience. Terence Stamp broadcasts himself as a great Shakespearean actor, and outdoes himself reciting Macbeth! Vincent Price reads Poe as no one else ever did.
Last night, I managed at last to see Toby Dammit in full. It was the French dubbed version, but the brilliance of Fellini/Stamp/Rota transcended that. A real treat!
Thanks so much for posting these clips. Now, when I watch my French dub DVD, I can imagine Stamp's sneery and yet vulnerable voice instead.
funny no one ever asks about the other films on that disc....
That combo of Poe, Felini,Shakespere,Stamp (Toby) and that amazing soundtrack ( I actually bought the CD!!) makes this film by far the best one on the disc!! Just skip the other 2!!!.
@Ralbert123 Bluray players are relatively cheap now. I've seen them as low as $60. If you have a newer Playstation, they have Blu-ray players in them. I bought one just so I could play Toby Dammit!
@Ralbert123 The correctly restored version is now available on DVD Blu-ray! I bought mine through Amazon UK. It is a region free dvd. I don't know if it is available through Amazon.com US. You can still buy it from the UK version. Just have to pay the extra shipping.
Thank you so very much for posting this. I have been to every video store looking for this, with no avail. Yet you have put this on here and im viewing it in it's entirity! Oh it's gorgeousity like silvery wine in space, gravety all nonsense now. May good come to you always for having done this good deed!
Toby Dammit is every actor in its nucleatic form. Hurah and bravo!
ATTENTION!!!!: This is finally being released on Region Free DVD and Blu Ray November 15th. The most important detail: "- Alternative English language version of Metzengerstein, English dubbed version of William Wilson and English & Italian audio versions of Toby Dammit as well as the French dubbed version of Spirits of the Dead."
@KrillinGoku It's about time! I've had this deteriorating VHS copy recorded off TV for years. That's something that it has been viewed almost 10,000 times now!
The French version is just plain weak. It will be nice to have a nice restored version. Is that dvd going to be a US release or UK?
@KrillinGoku I just pre-ordered a copy! I didn't see anything about it being region free. Hopefully it is. Otherwise I'll have to pick up a region-free player.
Fellini, Ray Charles, Poe, Ferrari. And that woman! Shakespeare never done so well. A little girl torments and tempts Toby Dammit away from a dull world of hype, greed and fools. Loss of his head (reason): "I'm going to get across!". But it's Terence Stamp in a perfect performance that stands out. Never been equalled: an angst-ridden drugged-up alcoholic losing grip on reality partly by choice because the world offers nothing anymore but predictability. "What rubbish!" Vincent Price reads Poems!
Toby Dammit may not have been a great actor but Terence Stamp most definitely is!
Fellini tore this out of the subconscious ether and created a marvelous piece of cinema that lives in a very special place of horror history. Perhaps that's why it's so cloudy and hard to get a hold of as all great things are. For years I've believed this to be at the very peak of cinema excellence and it would be a loss if it wasn't given it's ultimate designation as the greatest short horror film of all time!
This is amazing! I've seen the French version hundreds of times, but I MUCH prefer this one! Terence Stamp is my all-time favorite actor, and this is probably my favorite performance of his. Fabulous!
all of fellini is dubbed even if terence stamp is english and here speaks english, Fellini worked without sync sound, thus shooting everything silent and then dubbing all of his actor's voices
Thanks for posting this. I have the French language DVD, which is nice, but, the English language was how I remembered the film from all the late shows. Must be Fellini's finest work, or near the top!
you're right juniorredds, the original has a cosmopolitic atmosphere, the different languages spoken one on the other give the image of the "Cinema Babilonia".
Vetta dell'arte cinematografica. La battuta, riferita a Shakespeare, "...secondo soltanto al nostro sommo Dante" non è stata prudenzialmente tradotta in inglese nei sottotitoli.
Wow this is the first time I've ever seen this in english, I only own the french version. Beautiful speech. Is this the one that is narrated by Vincent Price?
Amazing performance by Terence Stamp. (Terribly undrated actor). Fellini was a genius, this film is real art. Wish they would get the audio right in a proper DVD!
Could you please tell me where you got this with the original audio track, english spoken by Stamp and the italians speaking italian? All the versions I have have been ruined with french or all english audio
I recorded off a local TV channel. It was a late night movie. It was badly edited and was missing big parts. The video tape has degraded significantly over the years :( I too bought the dvd's with the lame French dubbing. I did see a restored Toby Dammit at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood a few years ago with all the correct English dubbing so it does exist. Maybe one day it will make it to DVD in it's proper form!
I also caught The Egyptian Theater screening. FANTASTIC! Laserdisc offerings feature the English language dialogue. I've included some notes on a 2nd post.
IMDB Notes: The first pressings had a mastering problem: On side 1 the French soundtrack was on the digital tracks and the English on the analog track. On side 2 it was reversed, i.e. English on digital and French on analog. The disc was recalled and a new pressing issued.
Очень. Очень сильно. Это мой герой, очень часто чувствую себя Тоби Дэммитом Феллини. Не слезает с обоев на рабочем столе. Он-я. (Конечно, сравнил, кто я такой... но правда, очень-очень)
It's best film ever (Tobby Dammit, not whole Histories).

My taped version is also edited I don't know why they did that back then.
So when I bought the DVD I was surprised to see the extra stuff. To have both the english and the uncut together would be pretty nice!!!!!

Absolute best!!! Terence Stamp should have gotten an Oscar. His entire perfamance just rocks. Only Brando could be at this same level.
