Ha! I friend of mine had this and I played it loads back in 1987 - graphics looked a lot sharper because of the small screen. We played Bruce Lee, Commando, Ghosts N Goblins.... ah good times....
reminds me of an oscilloscope, just about as heavy too, although i think the screen takes up a good 1/3 of the unit if its anything like the mini CRT's of that era
I had the Commodore 16 with a cassette player for games, I think it was basically the equivalent of a ViC- 20 for the European market. Some of the titles I still remember include Zzap!, Monkey Magic, Purpule Turtles and Kickstart..
The ,8 is telling it which device to load from, the first floppy is 8. I can't remember what the ,1 is for. I think it may have something to do with loading directly into memory bypassing basic but I'm not sure.
@Gooberslot The ,1 at the end tells the machine to load the program into memory, beginning at an address stated in the beginning of the program file (two first bytes in the file, "little-endian" first. Omitting the ,1 (or putting in ,0 instead) would load the program into a default area of memory (the 38K chunk for BASIC programs). Easy and straight forward to remember, eh? :-P
WoW!! at 1st i thought it looked like an oscilloscope!! how cool is that with a mini screen and the speech sample sounds really smooth!
mMy freind had a C64 and i always remember how great the games were and especially how good the music sounded.Recently learned it was all down to the SID chip and am now really interested in getting one with the music program which had the piano keyboard overlay thingy..
BTW<has anyone ever said how much you look like Tom Morrello (RATM)?
These things were awesome. I saw one run through an Auction in my town that I was the computer tech for. I was hoping to bid on it myself but another vintage computer collector got wind of the auction having one and he put a crazy bid on it that was out of my range. I had fun with it during the week we had it. I used my Skate or Die disk to demo it. That little screen is insanely sharp and the speaker isn't too shabby, though it doesn't compare to the 4.5 incher in the 1702.
If you zoom in on the monitor, so that it fills the entire frame, the exposure will automatically adjust, and you will get a much better picture. In this video, there is more darkness than there is light, so the camera is adjusting the exposure for the darkness.
I had one of those.I kind of miss those days: the OS was built in, and you did exactly one thing at a time. I know there are still some diehard C= 64 owners out there. They still program for it, including a C= 64 web browser.

Actually with SX-64 you don't have to write LOAD"*",8,1 and then hit RUN; because it doesn't have a tape connections at all, the basic tape load (SHIFT + RUN/STOP) will load and run the first program from floppy. It's a little modification to kernal, as the more contrast colours are.
Haha, I didn't know made this video and I wasn't paying attention and I was glad it was you! Not a lot of people are really good at reviewing like you are :)
Nice review. I know you probably have a lot of requests, but when are you going to review that Commodore Vic-20? I'd love to see your take on it. Thanks for the great videos man.
lol "pretty heavy... 15 pounds" it's actually not that bad. And that's coming from a fairly weak 16 year old. At least not that heavy to where it's too much to take it out of your house and into your car
@Emillister not at all! many enterprise businesses still use large tape libraries to archive huge amounts of data due to their quick read and write speeds.
@TalksWithDirt Why didn't you buy an amiga instead? I'm not entirely sure why you'd live with 5 year old tech when the only advantage was a crappy unreadable midget screen.
@richardmaudsley77 Well I grew up with a 64, and had a huge library of pirated software. Also, like I said I had to carry it from college to the East Coast so the crappy small screen made this easy. I did not get another personal computer until 1990 when I got an AMD 386 40. By '87 I was doing all my serious computer development on the University VAX/VMS machines. I did not get back into home computers in a big way until 1992 when I could run Linux on my 386 and 486.
How freaking cool is that...I have the exact same SX-64 model AND the same Star Wars floppy that I was using for testing.
My builtin disk drive is shot, I think it's one of the soldered chips on the FDD board. Sucks. I'm going to donate mine to the AVGN as soon as I get it fixed.
@Torgoable hi man is not easy to found people that repair your sx i had the same problem and noone wonted repair it after one year i meet a guy that worked for a commodore point and after i pray him for one mounth him repair it to me. the better thing is to try doing your self and read a lot repair book
@StickPeopleAndPuff u know a good guide about alignment of the 1541 head ? i can't found one with illustartion. and to put of the drive from sx is a problem u have to take cpu card and maybe to crt monitor
Man, if i were you i would be really carefull with that Star Wars floppy!.. Great video. Commodore 64, the comp of me and my friends childhood. What more is there to say. Great system! Awsome games. Just beat the hell out of PC's at the time! A system that was so perfectly designed that it dug its own grave so to speak. Then Amiga came.. was not the same... Thank you for this video! Hey "Law Of The West" anyhone? :)
Ah - LOAD"*",8,1 I remember that. Amazing looking machine, must have been cool for the time. I remember that but I just had the usual 64 setup, great video - enthusiasm comes through well to any retro-gamer/collector.
Omg, I remember when I was about 3-4 my brothers who were about 10-12 years older than me, had one of these. The thought of me playing it recently popped into my head about a week ago and I was dieing to know what it was, I now remember thanks to you. I just remember playing a basketball game on it and that was it haha
AAHHHH!! Gamester81! Thanks for bringing the Amiga to light! I grew up demolishing games on this thing; drove my parents crazy. I actually have 2 (Amiga Commodore 64) with about 800+ games. Complete collections with manuals for about 80% of the 800 games. Out of this World!? Zack McCracken?! Better Dead than Alien!? Silk Worm!? And not to forget the original "Prince of Persia". What a classic console.
I always remember it sounded like a woodpecker was in the floppy drive. I'm so glad you showed Congo Bongo because I never would have remembered that game from when I was young. I'm sure there are tons I will remember once I look around for them. Great video!
I think the prompt is required due to piracy reasons, since those floppies were fairly common at the time. It was the same with some DOS games, but most of them just put a place in the middle, which you can't pass without the game manual, like "I forgot the formula for this potion" and then it gives you a codename like yarzek (I just made that up), and it would be in the manual, and next to that would be the formula. So, kind of creative way to deal with piracy at the time, eh?
wow $595 I had the 128 got one of these for a friend when they wer discontinued was around $25-$30 was insainly cheap when the poularity was gone stores couldent get rid of them
on the 128 when I moved to hell-A.Z i hade in in storage thing got rained on and exsposed to 100 + heat still worked good even the flopy disks lol cant kill it
Well, the one i have uses a regular Commodore 64 power supply, and since newer tv's are compatible with both pal, and ntsc, i don't see the problem? :) I don't know if the commodore has region coding, but i very much doubt it, hehe.. :)
It's just a commodore 64 with the cartridge slot pointed up instead of back, and no keyboard built in.. it even has all the connector's for disk drive, tape and so on, there's just no holes in the case. :)
Very obscure console, hope you get one someday. :)
Nice vid, i don't understand why you didn't adjust the brightness on the thing to suit your camera, before you recorded the review, you can see it clear as day when you adjust it during the review.. :)
you should really do the Commodore 64 Game System, if you have one.. Quite rare, only released in europe i think, and only sold in the area of 20000 units, most of wich is no longer operating.. :)
Yeah the brightness is weird because what is clear through the camera I can't see crap in real life.
As for the C64 Game System, I don't own one of those. Main problem is that they are all PAL and not compatible here in the states. It looks like a really cool system though. I know Steve Benway owns one of these.
The reason c64 doesn't 'auto load' is because is has the DOS on chips on every drive itself. It also had BASIC program language built into the machine. Often you could store more than one program or game on one disk, so you would usually turn on the system, and load up the game you wanted, or pull up a directory (catalog in apple terms). No wait time is necessary. The apple on the other hand, must load DOS off the disk and then load a program or basic. Either system has +/-.
The SX-64 is cool. I had one with rca jacks to hook up a vcr and one with a cd Player. The screen is to small is cool how it only takes one plug to plug in. I had one where the monitor would flicker and make it look like the game don't work but I would lightly tape the top of the unit and the flicker would repair it self unitl you move it out of place if you carry it to another room then you have to lightly tap the top part again. They weigh around 27 to 34 pounds. I want in original Box NEW
Does the SX 64 let you you feed the picture to a regular size monitor? That screen is tiny! It actually got really clear when you started messing with the brightness.
Yeah there is an AV jack in the back. I noticed the same thing about the picture quality after I posted it. Funny thing is that in real life when I turned it down to make it clear on the camera, it was too dark for me to see what I was doing.
Nice, Now that's pretty cool XD. Green with envy! I loved the sound on that bad boy as well. I'll see what I can find in the future here! great job man
I love Star Wars, it's my favorite series of movies of all time. As for the new movies Episode I give a C because of Jar Jar, Episode II a B, and Episode III I love and would give an A.

No wait time is necessary. The apple on the other hand, must load DOS off the disk and then load a program or basic. Either system has +/-.

SX-64 is a great computer. Be careful with it, treat it with care, and don't sell it.

I love Star Wars, it's my favorite series of movies of all time. As for the new movies Episode I give a C because of Jar Jar, Episode II a B, and Episode III I love and would give an A.
