When Nottinghamshire balloted ,police stopped a lot of the notts lads who where striking from getting to their pits,my own pit Moorgreen voted to strike, the NCB immediatly said any miner at Moorgreen over 50 could finish immediatley with a pension, end of majority for strike at Moorgreen. However Notts Working Miners got their just deserts one pit left just! I have promised to piss on Thatchers grave if its the last thing I ever do.
My Case of stout is in the cellar ; hopefully God will allow the Devil to bite Thatchers Arse with Hubris very shortly and the Poor Bastards who were robbed by her and her cronie Banker Arselickers/ Nazi profiteers will celebrate the death of one of the most Vile Tories who ever lived.
@thevster1603 lol i see wat ur saying but i'm led to believe it's the tories who broke the unions' backs in the first place i've had dozens of jobs and never even had an opportunity to be a union member. perhaps it's because most were slave like temporary contracts which i believe the tories brought in to start with. anyway, i never defended the unions... or labour for that matter, we live in a country where exposing government corruption gets you assassinated so wat's the best we can hope for?
You don't have to work in a unionised work place to join a union, if you join like I did on my own, you can make a difference, you can call a rep to any hearing at work and have law on your side! as soon as I joined I was left alone, but within a year of me leaving, the place was unionised, because others saw you cannot be victimised if you stand together. Who says the Unions are beaten? One of the biggest stand offs with capital is on the cards for this winter? I know Polish workers will be there .Unionise! Organise! Workers Unite! Or be a scab with the bosses condemning us all to poverty and unemployment. Which side are you on? There's no middle way or perhaps Third Way!
if the pits were still open i'd have a secure well paying job and cheap heating bills instead of having to stitch together part time jobs and freezing my knackers off every winter.
@Welshman2008 It does not matter where they live.....they will be tarnished with the shameful name of scab until they die, and even after 26 years l cannot forget or forgive them
@Welshman2008 . Used to have a mate, Who worked at a pit in Kent, During the strike They were solid, And Would never go back. Kent Miners were the forgotten heroes.
KiIDS WITHOUT A FUTURE. If anyone honestly tell me that Thatcher had any feelings for the the kids of mining towns, then im all ears.T he simple fact remains. The tory government were on a course of establishing a new breed of society.A society, that had one goal.GREED.As a result ,a part of the UK was exploited and fattened, its now called ESXXXXX .the parts thathcher destroyed are now becoming a cultural part of this country.LET ME INTRODUCE LIVERPOOL.MANCHESTER,WIGAN BOLTON THE NORTH
@crazyboyxx Yet I have to watch my hard earned tax money propping up defunct Banks and then watch their incompetent employees grant themselves millions in bonuses, for what, nearly bankrupting the entire Western World? In the long term, as the Germans have proved, subsidising the energy (and therefore COAL) industry does pay off. Imported coal now costs the same as we could've been producing it for ourselves, so we've actually lost as we are now bankrupting ourselves with the welfare costs.
she was happy to do it , revenge for the miners strikes of 1970s . she was not going to lose votes in strong labour areas . same with the ship yards . burn in hell bitch .
I will always support our hard-working British workers. There aren't many people prepared to go down the mines and do that dangerous and dirty job, and Thatcher took away their livelihoods and forced them onto the dole or re-train for the service industries like catering or retail.
@crazyboyxx The miners back then could sell their coal but couldn't compete with cheap subsidised imports. Much of the cheap imports was coming from Poland where ironically the Tori government was supporting their Trade Unions (remember Lech Walesa) whilst at the same time destroying the Trade Unions in the UK. Many mines that were closed were profitable such as the one I worked at. The week before our closure was announced we broke productivity records and were front page of the local newspaper

@crazyboyxx So lets get rid of all non profitable sections of society....the Police....NHS...Social Services...Armed Forces....ect ect . after all these people are sucking the life out of tax payers like yourself .
hey 69salford,the fight at orgreave was with the army, the police were there to police a demonstration. We fought with trained commandoes, royal scots and irish guards. We never once threw an indiscrimate fire extinguisher nor a punch at anyone that never had it coming. That prick that threw it could have killed the very person he was protesting for.Get a grip dickhead
@grettoz possibly....but dont forget , some years before the strike there had been a national ballot seeking a yes or no for a production bonus......the national ballot carried a no vote,,, ..Notts was the only area to vote yes ...so they said sod you to the rest...ignored the national vote... and made a seperate deal with the NCB......Notts may not have come out on strike even if a national ballet had carried a vote for strike
"I wonder when the brits will start lopping heads"
- Some kid is about to be sent to jail for throwing a fire extinguisher off a building at riot police....it's a fuckin disgrace - he didn't even hit anyone
I wonder when the brits will start lopping heads. I mean what does it take? The French did and they have rights and power and work although I think Sarcozy is about to sell them out like Thatcher did. Miners should reopen those mines themselves - just walk in and take them back
im at school learning bout miners strike, omg means i dint know owt abart it till we started learnin bout it, my dad is an ex miner who was on the picket lines n i live in an ex mining town. my mum n dad say wot maggie thatcher did was kill their community n my dad hates nottingham. my mum says maggie thatcher was a self-serving bitch who hated the workin class n the tories like 2 keep the workin class in their so-called place. i wont vote tory wen im 18 after wot ive read on miners strike.:(
@kayzi17 Well done. lts good that you are learning about the 1984/85 strike at school.........all children of school age should learn about the struggle and what Thatcher did to our industry, communuties and people.
l was a miner during the 1984 strike...South Wales Area NUM...Thatcher had made it clear that she would attempt to break the trade union movement in this country. She knew that to do this then she would have to destroy the NUM, and if it meant destroying the British coal mining industry, then so be it. lt was a battle that had to be....with Scargill or without. We lost...Thatcher won. The coal industry was closed down. If those sad Notts men.pushing trolleys in Tescos had come out, who knows

i was a notts miner during the strike a young lad but followed the others , thatcher did ruin the coal industry i agree and the fact we spend millions importing coal now is a joke ...my family still live in an old mining village and its never recovered i moved many yrs ago but to go bk and see old miners now pushing trolleys in tesco or on the till at the local off licence not good to see....
good riddance to coal a filthy polluting fuel,Mrs. Thatcher was a green pioneer! Who would of thought?Fantastic woman, greatest modern day prime minister.
@Mynameisaw Funny I do,nt remember Mrs.Thatcher calling the miners strike I thought Mr.Scargill called the miners strike.Actually the Nottinghamshire miners voted not to strike but the other other miners tried to picket them out of work and the police were caught between the two.Actually the NUM felled the Tory Heath governmen in 1974,but in round 2 in 1984 Thatcher won thereby defending democracy. The electorate decides who governs the country, not the unions.
democracy to defend youre job, if you was living in a mining area you would have known that there was plenty of coal, doncaster, rjb mining, these miners bought there mines back, and guess wot you ingnorant bastard, they made them profitable, then we wouldnt be using foreghn coal and there would still be sustainable communitys, twatcher called us the enemy within, dont suppose you even know wot a bevvin boy is do you. the whole country was supported and looked after by our mines.no one worked harder.
@oorgary I worked down the pits at this time. I've got to say the fall of the coal industry was down to Scargill. He. would have won a ballot to strike and made it official. Instead he left the miners to fight it out amongst themselves. He and he alone is responsible. He tried to bring Thatcher down and played into her hands
@votan1340 Your so right, i was working in the Staffordshire coalfield. Scargill betrayed us. Kinnock brokered a deal with Thatcher to get us back to work and Scargill never even gave us the option to vote on it, he turned it down flat.
It was a personal vendetta with Scargill & proved that unions should never be allowed to bring a country to it's knees the way he tried to do.
@alunhughes147 yeh course i was a scab out for the full strike as a 16 year old & pinching coal from landsales to provide for miners who had kids and needed to heat the house and water.
Of course i was a scab standing on street corners with buckets collecting money to provide food for miners with families.
The fact that Scargill betrayed the miners has fuck all to do with any man going back to work.
what the fuck did you do during the strike asshole?
@markyboy1704 First....l didnt scab.....l was a member of the NUM South Wales Area and had worked underground for 25 years...so l do not need a 16 year old to ask me what l did in the strike, !...l was present at Orgreave and stood on many picket lines throughout the Midland coalfields during the conflict. This strike could not have been avoided....with or without Scargill...Thatcher wanted to destroy the NUM by any means.. lf l offended you and you were'nt a scab then l am really sorry
1st: Close the Pits, 2nd: Fight the war for oil in the Middle East. Doesn't take a genius or a politician to figure out the direction in which we are headed.
As someone said: "You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows."
Why dont you just fuck off and read The S*n "newspaper" you cunt. Or the Daily Mail, Buncha fuckin Nazi's. Daily Mail tribute to the british Armed Forces. Buy the sunday Mail and you get a free DVD etc etc these are the cunts that SUPPORTED Hitler. You read that i can fucking tell. Infact your so narrow minded you didnt even fucking kno that.
And as for deathtotheunions@freddiemercfull. Your a fucking knob head. Yeh you carry on being told what to do by people "more important than the rest". Thats how you see it dont you? A politicion is more important than me. lmao. They arnt. They serve me, just as the police do. I question them and not the other way round.
Does anybody here honestly believe the pits are empty? bullshit. They flooded them out for a start, and they keep the coal back for a "rainy" day. Tons and tons of coal in the UK, but these cunts are only intrested in the super rich. Vote Tory and your nothing but a stuck up cunt. There called Conservatives for a reason. Look the word up. SHUD come under the word cunt.
Men get laid off who have worked for 20 even 30 years down the pit. Its ok for politicions with there flash houses and luxury cars and luxury PENSIONS. Not to mention luxury wages, paid for by US. They are so out of touch with reality that they claim back money that they used to buy a Poppy for the war dead. Fucking scumbags.
@prodandproud You should make a soap box and stand somewhere on it. Preferably in the middle of a forest. Then perhaps you might find someone to listen who cares. A red squirrel perhaps. 'Bout time you got over it old chap, it's history, now go and live your life and stop thinking it's cutting you and your comrades a raw deal.
Thatcher was a cunt! She broke her arm hahaha daft cow! State funeral?? MY ARSE!! il crack open the beer when that cows dies, and have a party! I kno plenty of people who think like that too. Even now the pits are full of coal plenty of them full of coal. They asin, well, the Government i suppose or British Coal Industry who both piss in the same pot so its the Government. They flooded the pits, even only a few year ago they where fluding the pits, saying, "no more coal here" which is bullshit.
hey death to unions is she dead can she talk? She is rotting isn't she? I am waiting I got some good ale saved for the moment when I hear she lies rotting and stinking in the ground!
@freddiemercerful - yea like unions never stop people going to work or questioning the executive do they - ha ha ha ha ha lovl lovl - rememember how the people stood up to the scum unions in the late 70s and early 80s by thrusting by the pickets and going to work - crazy I know but there you go.
@vivascargill - are you really saying that scargill was a moderate - I think you will find that he was seriously left - hence the rise of Thatch and the massive defeat of labour in the 80s - ps as for 2010 the Tories are crap - Labour are crap - Vote Liberal they cant be any worse. Byeeeeee.
@deathtotheunions by no means! 'MODERATE"is a word that puzzles me--no he is "seriously" left as Enoch Powell was "seriously" right.I have no use for moderates--they are extremists and cowards. The most dogmatic people I know call themselves moderates--Graham Greene said "you take your side once and for all" he was right--and Arthur has done that. I have a respect for Powell though he was my enemy. Arthur Scargill should be considered a great man by serious people.
@vivascargill Whilst I agree with you on gayboy moderates - at least Weggie Benn respected Thatch for having hard core opinions - Scargill was a failure becuase he didnt see which way the wind was blowing - to call a big strike right after Labour`s 1983 thrashing was stupid - if he`d of got top redundancy pay and big investment in forming mining areas then he would have been a hero - after all why do you think Thatch told the miners to Fuck Off - she had real power.
@deathtotheunions fair answer--but you have read Seaumus Milne? Benn and Powell were friends--serious people on the left and right can respect each other--the serious right here are paleoconservatives-- Rush Limbaugh is a fool--compare him to Peter Hitchens (last I heard) but I think there is another narrative- --the strike was defensive. Arthur was willing to risk his life and that is quite different from liberal scum - kill your libs I'll kill mine --more later good post!
We now import thousands of tons of coal from as far away as S America when we have pits with plenty of coal left in them standing idle. Communities that used to be thriving, full of tax paying workers now dead with 80% of the population claiming benefits. Thatcher wrecked this industry and those communities.
Once you factor in the social costs of benefits it probably didn't save any money at all. Plus it adds even more environmental costs and the miners in those countries we import from have terrible working conditions and low pay.
@jdclover what a stupid comment thatcher did not wreck this industry, the unions wrecked the coal mining industry with their outdated demands, just like they will wreck the post office and probably destroy BA as well.........unions fuck up big business its what they do best!
@jamesjnr67 It's normally management error that destroys big business. look at the fines levied on BA for price fixing, the lack of inovation in the car industry, the channel tunnel fiasco, private railways, banking. The finger gets pointed at the unions when management on hugely inflated wages are incompetent. Unions represent normal working people. Is it a coincidence that the decline in unionism has coincided with the uk's move to a low-paid service economy?
So it was okay for the NUM to go on strike 25% of the time between 1965-1985 then. What moron would be dependent on their heating and power on a union run by hard left scum ?????
@vivascargill - there were plenty of supplies at the power stations in spring 1984 and then that moron scargill calls a fuel strike on the 1st of may - what a total arse - oh yea what`s the point of going to slp headquarters (a phone box in worsborough) when you are just a bunch of thugs who dont care about debate but who were given a good smacking by the coppers and army boys back in 1984/85 ha ha ha ha ha ha.
@deathtotheunions i just wanted to tell you again what a slimy fuck you are!! and a fuckin coward. Like I said fuckhead go up to arthur and tell him your filth and when you die the souls of joe and davy will rip you apart forever!
@jdclover When she came to power it was something like 1 in 15 British workers were connected to the arms industry, by the time she left it was something like 1 in 6.
Evil old cunt, they can't stoke the flames of hell hot enough for her when she eventually croaks.
@jdclover it fucking stupid. i may not like the britih as a irish republican but i do not see the working class english as my enemy. we have a common enemy. maggie thatcher is a fucking cunt who needs to hurry up and die. does she not no that britain is sitting on top of huge masses of coal and oil? she took away your jobs and sold you out for cheap foriegn imports. the cow needs to die. working class of the world unite!
@iradan64 well said that man,you too are not our enemy,i met a republican in the bogside inn as i would in,! derry,i told him i was from a republic ,and it was surrounded by england, yorkshire!,we used to sing YRA then, the yorkshire republican army cos of that bitch, she will die soon and there is going to be one big party!woohoo,i think i,ll miss hating her though!
@jdclover yeah the tories introduced 'incapacity benefit" to hide the real jobless figures and are now taking that away, as recent history recedes, and they can blame the victims of their polices. Capitalism makes money from 'murdering the dead'.
@webcamerontellslies - I take it you always buy British - Buy a British car with luck it may last 20 000 miles. Also Dave `The Twat` Cameron is a twat. He doesnt tell lies because he doesnt say anything - he is tooooo scared to have an opnion.
The comments made by Tories reveal that they are very uncomfortable with this issue now that they want votes again. Basically they cannot face the truth about what they did, because the truth says they will turn the violent state institutions on British workers rather than protect British jobs.
People Dont Need Unions to order them about and enslave them - people can sort their own problems out unless of course they are layabout fat smokers who dont know what day of the week it is.
Pissing on the miners - brilliant and now the people are free - just look at the affluence in society - loads of cars many holidays - for the poeple who work that is.
the miners were hated by most of the people of britain during those strikes.they distroyed there own industry along with the help of the trade unions of the day.we could import coal from OZ £5 per ton cheaper deliverd to your door than you could buy it from your local coal merchant at the time.the unions wipped up the hatred in the mines and the miners followed like sheep.a moderate union leader told me that who was involved at the time the rest is history.
i was the first generation of my family not to be a miner lived through the whole thing remember tossing bricks at the pigs with all the other kids proud of my mining heratage hope thatcher dies a slow horrible death
Hello I am writting an essay about the miners strike for my degree. I want to focus on the battle of Orgreave from the miners points of view. If anyone was a miner at the battle of Ogreave or you had family, friends there I would really appreciate if you could tell me about it.
a mate of mine travelled to orgreave from another coalfield, so he was a 'flying picket' and in breach of an employment law established under thatcher.
he told me that police behaviour resembled that which you would expect to witness in an oppressive dictator state.
in today's multi-media world the police wouldn't dream of repeating their actions at orgreave, but back then - without 1000 camcorders/camphones pointing at them - they were free to incite riot. and did.
great vid. fantastic music. The miners stood up against the whole of the establishment. They were true heroes, as were their families. Miners were not against change, they wanted it negotiated, and they wanted to save the industry. What is left of coalmining, where is our manufacturing!
The miners had honour and truth on their side. The bosses only profit and a zeal to smash the unions.
For any ex-miners watching. Hold your head with pride. You fought for community and your class!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Marxist NUM thugs stopping people going to work - sod the lot of em - why dont you commie layabouts buy the mines yourself - how can you slag of Thatch for closing the mines on the grounds that they are uneconomic and not pay the subsides yourself - commie vermin layabouts.
you have no brain capacity to understand wot was going on.miners ..layabouts...wot do you do for aliving..commies?have you ever been down a mine, have you ever worked i wonder..you wouldnt last ten minits .ohand another thing,if you was part of a work force that were part of a mine that had 10 years coal, then told youd 1 month left to work, youd be pissed off.,your obviously aunhappy in youre life.go get some councelling.(thats a special doctor by the way)notthe council offices.bye bye.
you dont answer a single question do you ???? - if the mines are so great why dont you buy them - do you use electricity - you just dont get why the vast majority of people in this country lothe trade unions -
some pits were shut too early.some needed shutting ,scargil was disillusioned by making himself president for life...big mistake,as for electric yes, were getting solar power and selling it to the grid,in the long run, less coal gives cleaner emmisions to a point, however we do use large amounts of coal, but like gas pipelines(which i work on)the gas comes from russia, when the price goes up,well be in the hands of other countrys, not ideal really,as for unions the vast majority isnt you,
as for the comment ,why dont you buy the mines, most are closed if you havnt totaly already missed the oint, and also miners in doncaster bought their local mines and guess wot, there still going, there called rjb mining, and they were made economical. Not answering a single question?
I accept a few mines were reopen by workers but most wern`t which shows that Thatch was right to close them and not be dependent on commie union coal.
Whata mount the rise in suicides in 1983-1984 because of the amount of people who couldn't cope because they lived on nothing because Thatcher stopped their benefits.
Those people who killed that taxi driver were thugs, but why did they accidently kill him? Because they were trying to harm the "scab" in the back on his cab. Even if miners didn't want to strike they had to if they didn't want to be called a scab and be abused.
Anyone who tried to stop someone going to work is fascist scum. And if you think the people of this country would subsidies an industry that allows this then you are mad - I know poeple who took on the NUM thugs and went to work - God Bless Them and stuff scargill and co.
@1878EFC2008 - nice to see you answering questions - yea as if - so it`s okay for people to pay huge taxes to subsides a coal industry where the workers go on strike 25% of the time is it ??? - oh yes and if you have no time for me why did you slag me off last time ??? - also do you really love yourself and wank into mirrors - just asking loverboy - yea like socialism is going to win the next election knobhead.
we could get into a pissing match--not worth the time. No one likes the fact those people died, But it really was an accident--but it does not make them any less dead. I think you have to talk about Joe and Dave--deliberate murder. You can't pick and choose
my dad was a miner(coal getter)and my brother was working on the face(mainenance).......get down pit,get more money my old man would say(R.I.P.)...i never got a chance....ende up a painter and decorator(3 year apprenticeship).
where the fuck are you livin mars? have you been addin up the sums of money being stolen from the people 4 da banks & nuclear industry as well as privatised resources which belonged to us get a brain!!!!!!!
And how do you reconcile your belief that working class people should have fought fire with fire against the police, whilst supporting the state's military?
No consistency there, sunshine. Either all state power is deplorable or it isn't.
I will say you're spot on, and when the police attack, we should respond in kind and up the stakes everytime. Let these bastards work for their pay.
i wept like a child as i watched the miners marching back to work, heads held high after 12 months of poverty and attack by thatchers private army god bless each and every one of them and to thatcher i say not long now before you get yours you old bitch.
you stupid unintelligent tit , to take on this superior goddess in the vain hope they were going to beat her like they did heath was ridiculous , there was only one outcome and it wasn't going to result in a win for those violent thugs having to admit defeat in the end
Baroness Thatcher to you . I don't read the Mirror ,. tacky little smutty paper , or am i just being sarcastic .Of course i love the lady , she smashed the most dangerous subversive threat to our country since nazi Germany ,if the repulsive scargill had won (not that he ever had a chance he was WAY out of his depth against Her ) then outdated socialism would've reared it's very ugly head again , he didn't give a flying fuck for his men ,he sold them all down the river in the hope of power.
Right honourable Baroness call the cow what you like, she was the worst thing in my life time to so call lead this country. You are quick to say scargill did not give a damb i think you should open your eyes all be it to late to the fact thatcher did not give a damb about miners or any working class . I remember one of the first things she did was to stop school milk for the kids, THAT SAYS IT ALL
It's a pity that i don't know you or live near you because i would happily offer you a bet of , five, ten , 50 or a hundred pounds that MrsThatcher was the only one in the cabinet to OPPOSE free milk being stopped and she was voted down. She had just been put in charge of schools and she didn't want to get on the wrong side of the educational bodies of the day . You , or other blinkered Thatcher haters either don't know or don't want to admit this but i can assure you it's true
Thatcher was as you say in charge of schools so end of. I expect it was someone else who thought up the poll tax and all the trouble that came with it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nobody is perfect , not even the great lady , even so the poll tax in theory was fairer , why should someone living alone pay the same as a house with 6 or more occupants , it was due to Labour councils spending WAY above their means and not using the money sensibly , safe in the knowledge that when the shit hit the fan they could then blame it all on Thatcher , i accept her main fault was that she did'nt see this coming , she should've known how irresponsible Labour councils were and still are.
In theory yes in practise she stole nearly athird more from this house hold to the old rated system but it cost the country a few more pounds to get it through the courts due to her greed. labour tory to opposite ends of a pole ,both no good but tory and thatcher in particular i found to be repugnant
Pity ,no matter what she did ,certain people would hate her with their ancient philosophies first she was a woman and many resented being governed by one back in the late 70's and 80's in many communities men were the head of the house and drank in men only clubs , women were there for family rearing ,sex , cooking and cleaning , she belonged to a party that wasn't subservient to the unions unlike labour ,love or hate her for me she had balls and wasn't afraid of making unpopular decisions.
i to think there is a place for a womon and a man for no other reason than respect for both male and female but thats another mater. As for her decisions they were just that ,hers she was a bully who would not listen and ended up her own worst enemy
what I admired most about the miners was their sheer dogged determination. I know this is going to piss some people off but scargill wasn't the man to pull it off.
I was - and still am - a member of ASLEF and refused to cross NUM picket lines by bringing my train to a halt at banners hung over a railway bridge.
God bless the miners -the last mass dispute that actually mattered.
@RichardElden you're glad we became less self sufficient?
ok......

KiIDS WITHOUT A FUTURE. If anyone honestly tell me that Thatcher had any feelings for the the kids of mining towns, then im all ears.T he simple fact remains. The tory government were on a course of establishing a new breed of society.A society, that had one goal.GREED.As a result ,a part of the UK was exploited and fattened, its now called ESXXXXX .the parts thathcher destroyed are now becoming a cultural part of this country.LET ME INTRODUCE LIVERPOOL.MANCHESTER,WIGAN BOLTON THE NORTH

sharonb314 10 months ago
@crazyboyxx Yet I have to watch my hard earned tax money propping up defunct Banks and then watch their incompetent employees grant themselves millions in bonuses, for what, nearly bankrupting the entire Western World? In the long term, as the Germans have proved, subsidising the energy (and therefore COAL) industry does pay off. Imported coal now costs the same as we could've been producing it for ourselves, so we've actually lost as we are now bankrupting ourselves with the welfare costs.

Mynameisaw 1 year ago
@Mynameisaw Funny I do,nt remember Mrs.Thatcher calling the miners strike I thought Mr.Scargill called the miners strike.Actually the Nottinghamshire miners voted not to strike but the other other miners tried to picket them out of work and the police were caught between the two.Actually the NUM felled the Tory Heath governmen in 1974,but in round 2 in 1984 Thatcher won thereby defending democracy. The electorate decides who governs the country, not the unions.

democracy to defend youre job, if you was living in a mining area you would have known that there was plenty of coal, doncaster, rjb mining, these miners bought there mines back, and guess wot you ingnorant bastard, they made them profitable, then we wouldnt be using foreghn coal and there would still be sustainable communitys, twatcher called us the enemy within, dont suppose you even know wot a bevvin boy is do you. the whole country was supported and looked after by our mines.no one worked harder.
oorgary 1 year ago
@oorgary I worked down the pits at this time. I've got to say the fall of the coal industry was down to Scargill. He. would have won a ballot to strike and made it official. Instead he left the miners to fight it out amongst themselves. He and he alone is responsible. He tried to bring Thatcher down and played into her hands
votan1340 1 year ago
@votan1340 Your so right, i was working in the Staffordshire coalfield. Scargill betrayed us. Kinnock brokered a deal with Thatcher to get us back to work and Scargill never even gave us the option to vote on it, he turned it down flat.
It was a personal vendetta with Scargill & proved that unions should never be allowed to bring a country to it's knees the way he tried to do.

deathtotheunions 1 year ago
@deathtotheunions by no means! 'MODERATE"is a word that puzzles me--no he is "seriously" left as Enoch Powell was "seriously" right.I have no use for moderates--they are extremists and cowards. The most dogmatic people I know call themselves moderates--Graham Greene said "you take your side once and for all" he was right--and Arthur has done that. I have a respect for Powell though he was my enemy. Arthur Scargill should be considered a great man by serious people.
vivascargill 1 year ago
@vivascargill Whilst I agree with you on gayboy moderates - at least Weggie Benn respected Thatch for having hard core opinions - Scargill was a failure becuase he didnt see which way the wind was blowing - to call a big strike right after Labour`s 1983 thrashing was stupid - if he`d of got top redundancy pay and big investment in forming mining areas then he would have been a hero - after all why do you think Thatch told the miners to Fuck Off - she had real power.
deathtotheunions 1 year ago

Thatcher wrecked this industry and those communities.
jdclover 1 year ago 21
Cheaper to import the coal, made the country plenty richer, of course Labour destroyed that as usual.
Jacada123 1 year ago
Once you factor in the social costs of benefits it probably didn't save any money at all. Plus it adds even more environmental costs and the miners in those countries we import from have terrible working conditions and low pay.
jdclover 1 year ago
@jdclover what a stupid comment thatcher did not wreck this industry, the unions wrecked the coal mining industry with their outdated demands, just like they will wreck the post office and probably destroy BA as well.........unions fuck up big business its what they do best!
jamesjnr67 1 year ago
@jamesjnr67 It's normally management error that destroys big business. look at the fines levied on BA for price fixing, the lack of inovation in the car industry, the channel tunnel fiasco, private railways, banking. The finger gets pointed at the unions when management on hugely inflated wages are incompetent. Unions represent normal working people. Is it a coincidence that the decline in unionism has coincided with the uk's move to a low-paid service economy?

Basically the miners stopped people going to work and if you now go to the local railway station you can see the damaged that they caused.
deathtotheunions 2 years ago
a mate of mine travelled to orgreave from another coalfield, so he was a 'flying picket' and in breach of an employment law established under thatcher.
he told me that police behaviour resembled that which you would expect to witness in an oppressive dictator state.
in today's multi-media world the police wouldn't dream of repeating their actions at orgreave, but back then - without 1000 camcorders/camphones pointing at them - they were free to incite riot. and did.

great vid. fantastic music. The miners stood up against the whole of the establishment. They were true heroes, as were their families. Miners were not against change, they wanted it negotiated, and they wanted to save the industry. What is left of coalmining, where is our manufacturing!

deathtotheunions 2 years ago
some pits were shut too early.some needed shutting ,scargil was disillusioned by making himself president for life...big mistake,as for electric yes, were getting solar power and selling it to the grid,in the long run, less coal gives cleaner emmisions to a point, however we do use large amounts of coal, but like gas pipelines(which i work on)the gas comes from russia, when the price goes up,well be in the hands of other countrys, not ideal really,as for unions the vast majority isnt you,

Those people who killed that taxi driver were thugs, but why did they accidently kill him? Because they were trying to harm the "scab" in the back on his cab. Even if miners didn't want to strike they had to if they didn't want to be called a scab and be abused.

@ deat to aka fascist that was an accident-- it was meant to stop scabs--unlike the systemic murder of Joe and Dave
vivascargill 2 years ago 2
AN ACCIDENT - you fascist shit - stopping people who want to work and then complain about closed mines - up yours commie. NO SUBSIDIES for commies.
deathtotheunions 1 year ago
we could get into a pissing match--not worth the time. No one likes the fact those people died, But it really was an accident--but it does not make them any less dead. I think you have to talk about Joe and Dave--deliberate murder. You can't pick and choose

looking back we were wrong, we should have treated it like a war,and reacted accordingly,
unarmed civilians that we were attacked by the state
wiganjoe 2 years ago 3
And how do you reconcile your belief that working class people should have fought fire with fire against the police, whilst supporting the state's military?
No consistency there, sunshine. Either all state power is deplorable or it isn't.
I will say you're spot on, and when the police attack, we should respond in kind and up the stakes everytime. Let these bastards work for their pay.

you stupid unintelligent tit , to take on this superior goddess in the vain hope they were going to beat her like they did heath was ridiculous , there was only one outcome and it wasn't going to result in a win for those violent thugs having to admit defeat in the end
englishrover 2 years ago
you must be a tory and love thatcher. You call someone else unintelligent, LOOK IN THE MIRROR
escortmk112 2 years ago
Baroness Thatcher to you . I don't read the Mirror ,. tacky little smutty paper , or am i just being sarcastic .Of course i love the lady , she smashed the most dangerous subversive threat to our country since nazi Germany ,if the repulsive scargill had won (not that he ever had a chance he was WAY out of his depth against Her ) then outdated socialism would've reared it's very ugly head again , he didn't give a flying fuck for his men ,he sold them all down the river in the hope of power.
englishrover 2 years ago
Right honourable Baroness call the cow what you like, she was the worst thing in my life time to so call lead this country. You are quick to say scargill did not give a damb i think you should open your eyes all be it to late to the fact thatcher did not give a damb about miners or any working class . I remember one of the first things she did was to stop school milk for the kids, THAT SAYS IT ALL
escortmk112 2 years ago
It's a pity that i don't know you or live near you because i would happily offer you a bet of , five, ten , 50 or a hundred pounds that MrsThatcher was the only one in the cabinet to OPPOSE free milk being stopped and she was voted down. She had just been put in charge of schools and she didn't want to get on the wrong side of the educational bodies of the day . You , or other blinkered Thatcher haters either don't know or don't want to admit this but i can assure you it's true
englishrover 2 years ago
Thatcher was as you say in charge of schools so end of. I expect it was someone else who thought up the poll tax and all the trouble that came with it.
escortmk112 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Nobody is perfect , not even the great lady , even so the poll tax in theory was fairer , why should someone living alone pay the same as a house with 6 or more occupants , it was due to Labour councils spending WAY above their means and not using the money sensibly , safe in the knowledge that when the shit hit the fan they could then blame it all on Thatcher , i accept her main fault was that she did'nt see this coming , she should've known how irresponsible Labour councils were and still are.
englishrover 2 years ago
In theory yes in practise she stole nearly athird more from this house hold to the old rated system but it cost the country a few more pounds to get it through the courts due to her greed. labour tory to opposite ends of a pole ,both no good but tory and thatcher in particular i found to be repugnant
escortmk112 2 years ago
Pity ,no matter what she did ,certain people would hate her with their ancient philosophies first she was a woman and many resented being governed by one back in the late 70's and 80's in many communities men were the head of the house and drank in men only clubs , women were there for family rearing ,sex , cooking and cleaning , she belonged to a party that wasn't subservient to the unions unlike labour ,love or hate her for me she had balls and wasn't afraid of making unpopular decisions.
englishrover 2 years ago
i to think there is a place for a womon and a man for no other reason than respect for both male and female but thats another mater. As for her decisions they were just that ,hers she was a bully who would not listen and ended up her own worst enemy
escortmk112 2 years ago
I had a good laugh at this.
so the miners were 'violent thugs' eh?
not as I remember them: just workers trying to cling to their livelihoods and being goaded by the 'uniformed thugs'.
sounds like you're just another stupid unintelligent tit trying to rewrite history.
I hope thatcher's grave has got written 'licenced for dancing' written on it.
I can't wait to samba.

what I admired most about the miners was their sheer dogged determination.

Am I right in tinking scargill often defended Stalin and actually worked with Thatcher? I dont know, I just heard it.
