Irobot is an classic hard science fiction written by Sir Issac Aismov in the 50s. The movie bearing the same name deviated a lot from the book (in the crappy way), but still has nothing to do with ghost in the shell.

You know, there's lots of anime movies I like, and a few that I love.

That being said, nothing approaches this movie. Ghost in the Shell 2 is artistic, profoundly intellectual, thematically sophisticated, and in general, EPIC.

This movie lays waste to all that is mediocre; if you haven't seen, set aside 2 hours, or so, ASAP. It is mandatory viewing.

The only thing I hated was that it was a bit pretentious by shoving quote after quote in your face. It was a bit too much.

I suppose.....but I don't think it was, at any point, blatantly bad. Rather, it was just a central theme; speculation on the state, progression, and nature of humankind. As such, lots of quotes were made.

Well there you go, that's why you didn't like it that much. Watch the first one and the two series THEN watch the second movie. It gives you a lot of hints and, believe me, the story makes a lot more sense when you see them in order.
