Have some respect for the guy.. he is a decent enough drummer and enjoys what he is doing so screw you haters.. get on your own drumkit instead of criticising what others do with theirs.. Nick showed up to drum so it obviously means a lot for him just because he isn't same calibre as some of the others.. why even say that hateful shit imagine if someone said it about you
I'm just gonna take a gander and guess that Nick is one of those kids where his family and money and fame, and because of that, he payed his way to do anything he wanted to do. It's not like he made this thing because he's got talent (such as Blackwell, Toro, and Erskine). He made it because he's got Rich in his name. Which pisses me off because the kid is extremely disrespectful (and honestly, quite crappy too!) in his performance.
Peart's commitment to keeping Buddy's name alive is great, but his performances at these tributes always make me cringe. Year after year he's the worst player at these things. He's just not cut out for jazz, and his own material is just too boringly repetitive to pay homage to Buddy's improvisational and all around musical genius in my opinion. I see Peart on the billing and my stomach goes into knots for the man out of the embarrassment I feel for him.
although i like this idea and video ,in my opinion it would be better to select some living jazz drums legends to play this....it's buddy rich tribute we are talking about here.....i'm just saying.
Not a huge fan of Nick Rich's style but I personally love how he didn't try to just be a cheap imitation of his famous relative... *cough* Jason Bonham *cough*
listen if you were buddy riches grandson you would hate it to be compared to the great buddy rich so just let nick just grow into his own and he was just having fun isnt that wat drummings all about
Everyone gives Nick a lot of shit. Don't look at him, close your eyes and listen to what he plays. Its fine. Sure its not AS good as some others, but when I had this playing in the background and not watching it, I had nothing against his little part.
I don't understand the lack of respect for Nick Rich. You saw one clip of him playing, you might not agree with his approach, but hey they want the drummers their to be themselves, that's why they were asked to play. That is just Nick's style, and if you don't agree with it say it with respect, no need to call him a 'spaz' or 'jackass'. It looks like he's having fun playing his grandpa's old tunes to me.
@AnorimoS2008 I'm actually not an idiot, I do know when a drummer is swinging with warmth and feel. Neil himself has expressed his lack of jazz ability in many an interview (and he's not just being humble) Neil is a true rock drummer, and in fact if you watch his solo during the concert he holds a jazz solo for all of 40 seconds before turning it into a rock solo "The Rhythm method" In fact, he even flips his stick around and starts using match grip along with his "straight 8ths)
@christraven Nick is Buddys grandson? lmao!! The apple has fallen far from the tree. And for the rare few running to Nick's defence - he DOES deserve criticism because: Any meat head on the planet can bash out rock beats, it's Drums Grade 0. He was ONLY chosen to play at the concert because Cathy (Buddy's daughter) is his mum, which is completely unfair to the more deserving and more talented players. Nick Rich = Fail.
I have an issue with drummers showing up to a Buddy Rich tribute concert with a million bass drums and cymbals... I think they should strip down their kits jazz style. A drummer shoudn't be working a double bass pedal during a jazz number...
@DanLetts97 Maybe.. I think it's not that bad because they put they own style to the show. except for nick that well, i don't know why the hell is he there..
@AnorimoS2008 I'm a huge Peart fan, but if you have seen or heard anything from these concerts Peart doesn't exactly swing much... so really, playing YYZ?? I think he actually gave up trying to play jazz.
Only Terry Bozo would show up with a double kit and those stupid cymbals. What a sap! Everybody else had a 4 or 5 piece kit but not him, Double bass drums and a million cymbals that sounded like dustbin lids.
Chad's strength is groove drumming and that's what he did here. Quite frankly, I thought that while blackwell is amazing talent, he was so busy twirling his sticks that he threw himself off time. He ought to listen to Steve Smith's version of "Nutville". That was the best version I've heard of it.
so many drummers think Peart is god amongst drummers and whilst he is undoubtably better than me he is not in the same class as these other guys, well he's a rock drummer you might say but I bet these other guys can play rock much better than Peart plays jazz and I know that Peart has studied and practiced his jazz chops for a long time but he's so stiff, sorry to be so negative but i expected more from someone with his reputation
@ditto372 I played for fifteen years, in a variety of styles, and the only thing that stopped me was a blown ACL and five pins in my right arm and wrist. Yep, I don't know anything about the art of drumming.
The thing I think is funny about all of the comments bashing my opinion is that none of you seem to get the fact that I made note of Chad's talent. He's an excellent drummer, but I don't think this venue is the proper one for him. That's all.
@christraven Well, Buddy Rich WAS a Jazz drummer, right? So naturally, drummers who specialize in Jazz would do a better job. Chad is one of my favourite drummers, and he certainly admires Rich, though I do agree with you a bit.
the best yet worst thing bout this, is that none of the drummers really tried to make it sound like buddy, i cant decide if it makes it better or worse.
I'm afraid the most musical of that lot was Erskine by a country mile. in saying that I'd like to be able play like any of them with the exception of Nick Rich.
@ihatedjs It's called an opinion, son. Chad Smith is an incredible drummer - an incredible *funk* drummer, with groove and style. That's not at question. Swing and jazz, however, are not the same as funk. He did a fine job here, but like I said, this isn't the proper venue for him to demonstrate his skills, nor are his skills appropriate for true swing or jazz. Use the right tool for the job, so to speak.
@invaderharpie2112 Neil is obviously out of place here. I love Neil's rock drumming, but he's obviously out of his element in a jazz setting. He may have played in jazz band in high school, but I find it hard to believe that he played jazz professionally before going in to rock. The tune he's playing is Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump". If you REALLY want to see how it should be played, check out Sonny Payne on the video "Jazz Icons - Count Basie - Live In 62 Preview". Now THAT is how you swing!
@ChiTown7721 I do agree that jazz isn't his best genre to play. I'm just saying he grew up listening to a lot of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa and all those icons.
@invaderharpie2112 That I won't argue with. A lot of the great rock drummers did. Keith Moon was a HUGE Gene Krupa fan. I thought you were saying that he played jazz before rock. I have no doubt that he listened to jazz from a young age.
Do some basic drumming homework and youll find alot of better drummers like Neil Peart, Chad Smith, Tommy Igoe, John Blackwell, Terry Bozzio, Nick Rich, Peter Erskine ect...
question, istommy igoe sonny igoe's son, sonny was a famous jazz drummer and teacher from an earlier era, also, has nick rich bitten off his tounge yet?
Imo, these BR memorial concerts are organised somewhat badly. First of all, why invite all the rock drummers? Why not get some drummers who play jazz? Steve Smith, Dave Weckl? This just seems like a typical commercial project organised by some peeps who were paid to do it, much like everything else today.
And it almost seems like Nick's getting forced to be like Buddy (and people WANT another Buddy) and he has a great burden to carry, but a big band is not where he belongs
There a lot of harsh comments about Nick, but I think Buddy would just be proud that his grandson is playing drums and enjoying himself.. he may not be swinging but he is still playing alright lol
im sure Buddy was rolling in his grave seeing his grandosn Nick using matched grip............as Buddy called it, the useless nonsense rock drumming way of holding the sticks. you cant get nothing done.
I try to be very optimistic when it comes to anything relating to Buddy Rich; however I feel that this was just another way that cheapens Buddy’s name by promoting players like his grandson Nick. Buddy would be rolling over in his grave if he saw what his grandson looked like today and would have had a serious talk with Kathy too. Don't be fooled into buying this DVD as I did. There is absolutely no energy in this video what so ever! Very Disappointed!
@jodrasim - It's funny, I haven't heard of you, or seen your name in lights for the past 35+ years. Peart doesn't have to be impressive. He's going outside of his genre to have fun, and pay tribute to Buddy Rich.
YYZ, with the big band arrangement, is very different from the RUSH version. Perhaps that angle didn't impress you. So what?
All these guys sound great. Dom famularo plays on this DVD as well and he's also absolutely brilliant. Man these guys are all swinging hard.. Love it.
But why the hell is Nick Rich there. He's a low class version of Travis Barker, there's not an note of Buddy Rich in him. He needs a hell of a lot more practise.
This is a classic case of "Nepotism" and does nothing at all for the legacy of the Great Buddy Rich!!
@Barbosa123 .............too funny.................sorry, but he just looks like an arrogant douche................in the pics I have seen of him too he just seems like a tool........and we only know of him cause of his grandfather..........he's nothing special.
Really bad concert. There are a few really good drummers here but this is nothing like BR and it insults jazz artists. Or maybe they insult themselves i'm not sure
Nice to see Terry with a reasonable size set.

So what?

AHhhh He is a good kid. Since nobody will be like his grandfather lets cut him some slack. He's up there playing and we're not.
He will grow. Like Robert Plant always said,"Everything thats small...Has to Grow"
;p)

Wow, Nick guy is annoying to watch.
spacitydrummer4JC 1 year ago
All these guys sound great. Dom famularo plays on this DVD as well and he's also absolutely brilliant. Man these guys are all swinging hard.. Love it.
But why the hell is Nick Rich there. He's a low class version of Travis Barker, there's not an note of Buddy Rich in him. He needs a hell of a lot more practise.
This is a classic case of "Nepotism" and does nothing at all for the legacy of the Great Buddy Rich!!

Really bad concert. There are a few really good drummers here but this is nothing like BR and it insults jazz artists. Or maybe they insult themselves i'm not sure

lol the tight part on yyz is particularly suited to horn section, imho
dwilmer7 1 year ago
why did peart play a rush song, what could be a bigger compliment to buddy rich, than a song he's never even heard.
nick rich deserved no place here aside from his relation to buddy.
