  • Love the IM Corona Old Boy, I am a proud owner of one. I got the one with the briar wood body and gold plated finish at a local tobacco shop for about $72. Not bad for an old boy, they were 33% off at the time. Good video and I am a believer in a good lighter for a pipe. You are right, Corona's are the most reliable in my opinion. Love the Corona you have though, looks like you said very James Bond like. Thanks, Greg

  • Great video! Thanks

  • totaly agree with you that second lighter - i have had two different models and both don't work all the time - maybe it will light once out of 9 attempts - so I got a lighter like your first one and it's great....

  • Just ordered one of the Peterson Zippo sets as my first nice pipe. Been smoking a cheap drug store one my Mom had gotten my for my Birthday a long time ago. I only smoke it very occasionally but have been wanting to get a nice one for a while and figured for the price a Peterson would be by itself you get a nice Zippo as well which is a great deal. Got a can of the new Zippo fuel too but will at some point get a Butane insert for it.

  • For the money I've been using a soft butane insert for Zippo style lighter by Vector. They make both normal and pipe style lighter. I really like the classic look, but not having to fill it up every week. They use a reliable flint and wheel system.

    tobacco-barn(dot)com/s-190-lighter-inserts.aspx

  • @Shrikex357 Top tip, do they do the pipe insert for Butane also?

  • @dubinthedam yes

  • @dubinthedam its a 3rd party device (meaning it isnt zippo brand) but you can buy the insert for a few bucks on amazon

  • @dubinthedam Yes they do!

  • What, you've not heard the joke? OK, ask me if I've got a match. (waits patiently..) A match? Why yes, your face and my arse! Get it? Told you it was juvenile. Of course, the teller of the joke may have a handsome arse (e.g., JLo) in which case it may be a compliment (and with my face, an insult to her arse.) Signing off now, time for my meds!

  • Nice vid Dub. I have a Zippo but the flippin' thing lights every 4th try if I'm lucky. I love me Old Boy but it sprang (has sprung?) a leak and off to Corona hospital in Morrisville NC it goes with a check for $8 (2 pints!). So now I'm using matches. Work great. Plus, I get a chance to use my juvenile match joke.

  • I have both a dunhill and a st dupont, I suggest dunhill anyday of the week. You can a nice one for about £60-£90 on ebay whether thats a gold rollagas one with a barley effect or something, they really look top notch. A good working dunhill will light every time guaranteed and they are reliable. Personally i think st dupont arent as good, in price terms there about the same or more. Also its known the st duponts are more likely to break and i dont think they look as good.

  • @Th3MasTaaH good to get the confirmation, my Dunhill never fails and it gets some serious abuse and use. Dupont seem to be the lighter for people who like 'bling', the limited editions go for thousands....!

  • @Th3MasTaaH I have owned two St dupont's in my life the chinese lacqure and the 007 palledium one...both take seriuos abuse and never failed to work with me. I personally feel the quality of st D is better than dunhill, but that's me I suppose. :)

  • @vandegevel1 Have you ever owned a dunhill?

  • @Th3MasTaaH I currently own 3 dunhill lighters a Dunhill Rollagas Lighter 18k Gold Hobnail limted edition, Alligator Leather Turbo Sport and a very old Table lighter made of glass with fishes in them.

  • Ye course you do :/ 18k dunhills aren't limited, they where massly produced and them "Table lighter made of glass with fishes in them" have a name.

  • @Th3MasTaaH I'm not sure wither your looking for an argument or something like that but not with me. I had clearly stated on my first comment I PERSONALY think S.t Dunpont is a better lighter..that's called an opinion and personal taste. The Dunhill Hobnail was an icon lighter in the early days of Dunhill later brought out as a limted edition to mark this event, it was a gift to me from a dear friend. The Turbo I bought myself when I use to smoke cigars.

  • @Th3MasTaaH As for the table lighter it is from the line of Aquarium and was handed down to me and doesn't work but makes a very good paper weight in my office. Please do not go looking for arguments with people you don't know anything about, speacily when one was only tasting there own taste in items. I have nothing against Dunhill but I'm entitled to choose my own taste in lighters and pipes and what ever I may own.

  • I swear by Zippo lighters. I prefer the new type of fuel over the old, simply because the old fuel tastes a little bit like car exhaust. And they offer free repair or replacement for life. You can't beat that. Of course, I may just be biased towards Zippos because their factory/retail store is half an hour's drive from my house. haha

  • I agree with your analysis on lighters, In 48 years of smoking and collecting the Old Boy is my favorite lighter and you can hear the differance on your video's from the cheap ones. I used to like the pen type with a clip and its a natural tamper made by Colibrae but they don't work well for long-have a drawer full and are expensive to fix. IN Corona's made by Savinelli is really a limited life time guarantee--read it. Jason-USA-California

  • I wanted to buy a lighter like yours, but I wasn't shure which model yours was. I would like to know exactly what model of IM corona the lighter in your video is, a pipe Magie chrome or a roller chrome Barley pipe lighter or different model. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks

  • @kornbread069 It's a IM corona pipe magie, but the Old Boy is even more recommended, but a little more expensive.

  • @dubinthedam

Thank you very much for the info.

  • Get a zippo pipe lighter

  • So, the one lighter you have that is junk and made in china, is that called the Visol?

  • @paulwilliamsd don't think so....but when you see a china made lighter you'll know it.

  • its my opinion that matches are the best for pipe smokers, one box with 200 (if i re call correctly) matches for one dollar plus tax. does seem better in the long run without buying flints, fuel, and etc. maybe i'm wrong or just old fashioned, whatever you like best works.

  • @moojoomokney mojo, I love using matches, they just fit with the whole ritual of lighting a pipe. But I just find lighters handier for smoking outdoors. When I do smoke indoors I use matches whenever I can.

  • Been smoking over a year now, following you quite a bit. Just picked up an Old Boy from your recommendation and I love it. Style and performance. Thanks!

  • QUEER!!!

  • WHY DONT YOU JUST GIVE UP SMOKING

  • @pucklechurchio Why don't you let people make decisions for themselves? Everyone is aware of the dangers of smoking which is why personally I only smoke every once in a while. I find smoking pipes and cigars to be rather rewarding. I have a group of people who on random occasion just enjoy each other's company and our cigars/pipes, and we're not harming anyone!

  • u look like hal from malcom in the middle lol

  • damn ur rich

  • What is better to use as a windproof for bowls. Torch lighters or an ordinary zippo?

  • Since when does zippo charge for fixing? If they ever have then there's some false advertising about their guarantee(having never charged a penny).

  • I use a Zippo with the pipe insert, and the flavourless petrol. I find it very good, not bad in the wind, and cool to flip open and muck about with. I like the look of your Corona though, that might be on my shopping list!

  • Hey Dub! I am looking into a Corona like yours. How long do they last until you need to refill the butane?

  • not so long, about a week or two at most, lighting pipes tends to use much more gas than say ciggies.

  • lighting with a zippo out doors is amazing.

  • Good stuff for sure. Thanks for posting this. A lot of good info especially for a new pipe smoker like me.

  • I have a vintage old boy and it's absurdly reliable.

  • Cheap, disposable Bics rule! And they always work!

  • Speaking from experience, buying estate pipes is risky, as seen here!

  • I totally agree, you can save cost, but many pipes are on ebay because they didn't pass the pipe cleaner pass test in a shop or collectors find they gurgle excessively.

  • it's a pain in the ass! Love it!

  • 'acquisition' haha, i like it. nicely put!

  • As always, excellent video. I use a variety of lighters myself, including vintage lighters like a sterling silver Dunhill service lighter and a trench lighter. I have an SP Dupont as well. Don't waste your money on one of those!

  • isnt that first shape called a "zulu"

  • Yep...it's a zulu, not a horn or a cutty...oops

  • Hello Dub,

the single flame torch is (in my opinion) the perfect lighter if being outside in windy weather. But it needs some experience to lit the pipe without damaging it.

Your introduction is very good. I am still afraid of buying a special pipe lighter because the opinions are so different. Generally I prefered the "Piezo" lighter. But others say that these lighters are not that good. On the other hand I don't like to get lighters that always need new flintstones...

    Cheers

    Lars

  • Great video. Thanks.

I also use the Imco clippers. I will also add that they have the largest gas capacity, very reliable and last a long time. Here they cost 5 euros.

Over the years I have collected lighters of all types and I find that most of them do not last the heavy use from pipe smoking. I have a drawfull of dysfunctional expensive lighters. Electric ones are the worst. Irrespective of price, the piezoelectric crystal soon deteriorates and the ignition success drops to 1 in 10.

  • Justy struck me how much u look like Andy Cap!? ;)

  • i should smoke weed

  • Thank you. That was very informative.

I generally use wooden matches but have the Corona Old Boy with all the pipe shapes engravings, out of a pure adolescent need to own it! It works pretty infallibly and has a neat-o pipe tamper/poker worked into the bottom.

PIPEFRIENDCH has an interesting video about the JOBON double-flame number, with choice of side-showing pipe light AND high-intensity torch, spouting from the top. It includes a built-in cigar puncher.

  • Very helpful and descriptive video on pipe lighters. I'm looking into to a brass zippo pipe lighter atm. thou I'm still a bit concerned about the fluid aspect of it. have u heard about using alcohol in a zippo?

  • Hi proof alcohol should work in a Zippo, Everclear would probably work and give off less of a petrol smell. Zippo do have a new non-smelling fuel, it can be hard to find though.

  • Thanx for the feed back Dub. I look forward to more of your pipe vids! FC~

  • I don't know about the torch but the other lighters are great and matches are good if your an indoor smoker like me. Good video on lighters very informative thank you.

  • I know about the torch/burner, because I do use it when being outside in windy weather. It needs some experience to use it without damaging your pipe. But if you really know how to use it... you don't want to miss ist any more. ;)

Please, just leave me a message if you need to know more about it. I will explain everything that you may need to know.

    Cheers

    Lars

  • Zippo uses naptha as their liquid fuel. If you light the lighter and wait a few seconds (2 or 3 is long enough) before lighting your pipe you will taste no naptha. Fire it up and light without waiting that two or three seconds sometimes you do sometimes you don't taste it. This is my finding after using one for about 12 years.

  • I'm always scared to use a Zippo for litting a pipe. The flame is bright and hot... and the taste and smell are terrible. Don't you think that using a match or a small lighter would be more advisable? How do your pipe rims look like? Are they still okay?

    All the best

    Lars

  • No damage from using the Zippo. I don't use the Zippo pipe lighter. Just the plain ole original lighter. Rims of the bowls are not scorched, no taste (may depend on brand of fuel?) and the flame reaches the bottom of the bowl. I use either Ronsonol or Zippo fuel.

  • thepipesmokerslounge.yuku . com

  • Are Sarome lighters good? They are supposed to be Japanese?

  • Axbent, I've no ideed, but generally japanese products are, I've seen them in the shops, they look like good quality...dub

  • Great video, Dub! You covered a lot of ground here and offered some useful advice and food for thought.

    Warm regards,

    David

  • I always use matches but I don't think there is any right way to light a pipe- what works principle.. That's a bloody shame about that pipe. I've been kicked in the nuts a couple of times on ebay. The 'Gatsby' suits you very well.. Cheers Tim

  • THE DUB IS BACK !!!

  • great to see you back dub! another really good video, have been thinking about a pipe lighter so your advice was great! Steve

  • That might be the greatest cap/hat I've ever seen.

Thanks for sharing your ebay story. Sorry you got a bum pipe.

    Great Video!

  • All right good to see you back.

  • greatly informative n convincing toward the final choice a smoker should tk to purchase his lighter

    thanks for sharing n enlighting

welcome bk plz do keep posting

    cheers

    ahmad

  • Thanks all for the quick comments, I guess my main point is there are lots of options when it comes to lighters, the only real rule is buy what suits your budget....dub

  • indeed it is i vary btn the butane to zippo n matches indoors n they all work well,,u always speak to a pro level and a decent conversational discussion ,,again thnx for posting

    cheers

    ahmad

  • thanks again Ahmed...which is your preferable choice of lighter?

  • i normally go with the zippo and keep match using indoors only

  • do zippos work well for lighing the bowl when its smoked allmost down, ie for the last relight

  • probably not or as well as a match or a gas pipe lighter...don't pull it too hard and it should be fine...dub

  • and if they r fueled properly and they r zippo pipe ighters then they should hv a side opening chiminy tht allow the flame to go easily down but if u r using a very big tall bowl then u might wanna use the matches

    cheers

    ahmad

  • Nice pipes!
