Variangi were elite Venetic military units - also in war with old Julios Cesar. Julius Cesar called them "sea people" - Veneti (not italians, but old Vends - Venedas or old Slavs & Balts) "Varangiti" - to sail
???!!! Variangians (Varyags) were germanic (swedish) Vikings too, more tradesmen than robbers. They have created russian statement (Truwor, Askold, Dir, Ruric dynasty etc.). Caesar's Venetians were a celtic tribe living in present Normandy (Bretony?) territory. OMG!!!

@Penguincracker and were do you find them? i cant recall seeing wild horses in scandinavia they would buy them from the peaple from the steppes and those would be small ponys. and vikings never made mutch use of horses
@maarhoefe Well they started to use horses and "cavalry chock" in battle around1000 AD. They were smaller than today - look at icelandic horses to see the type. Scandinavias had use horses since before christ but hadn't used stirrups that wich ease fighting. Swedes had very good trade relations with stepp nomads (their kind of armor has been found in Birka - 850AD), Novgorod and Kiev etc. Also almost every one had, or knew someone that had, been to Bysans as a "Väring" or on a trade jurney.
@Penguincracker No actually Vikings used horses all the time. Espacially if you talk about the more upper class. Vikings was not as poor alot of people seems to think. Why Vikings didn't use horses in raids is most of all a "space/maintanice" koncern - and that they didnt really need them. Swedes also used smaller boats then Danes and norweigans as result of more often travel on rivers - wich gave even smaller space.
@nazisucksass how much time must i repeat that Vikings were not Variagians... Vikings were Jarl tribes, sea robbers, when Variagians were elite warriors... this is something if you have talibans on one hand and afganistan military on the other side...
@VendPrekmurec I said that Variagians and Vikings are not the same. In all of the sources i read Variagians are described as people from today's Sweden who conquered the East of Europe by land and not by sea.
Mano-a-mano is a Spanish and Italian construction meaning "hand to hand" . It was used originally for bullfights where two matadors alternate competing for the admiration of the audience.[1]
Current Spanish usage describes any kind of competition between two people where they both compete trying to outdo each other.
öööm if u saw the film than you know that they find those horses in Poland. 2 the vikings usually wear helmets. 3 The viking helmets rarely (very very very rarely and for rituals only ) have horns.
@Snorriseidr Well most helmets found is form the "vendel" period (500-750AD) but only one has been found from viking age. Alot of pictures show vikings with helmets though so sicentist actually dont know. The same with chain mail. They might have been inherited dow to the medival age and there for not found in viking context. One can belive but we dont know! And I would like you to show me any case where vikings did use horn on there helmets.
they didn't, this movie very wrongly portrays them. 1) Vikings didn't have horns. 2) Vikings rarely even had HELMETS. 3) Scandinavian horses are quite small. 4) Vikings weren't dumb enough to use those very small horses for much combat. :)
The ritual suicide is doubtfull indeed, only explaination is that it was the royal bodyguard of the warlord, letting him die ment a live full of shame for a bodyguard, it probably did existed, though like this I'm not sure.
then they should fight with a so great rage and make a big truble for them to catch the last remaining so they prefer to kill them on the spot were they are
Some major errors in how they picture the Vikings here...
First: Horses did not fit onboard the ships and they weren't used in battle during this era.
Second: Most Vikings did not have any helmet. Only one helmet is found in scandinavia from this era. The Jarls "horns" is pure "1800 romantic era" fiction.
Third: Chainmail was not that common. Only one is found in iron age scandinavia and it is from 200 AD. The Jarls shoulder armour are of roman legion model and not used at all by Vikings.
In a ritual battle man to man to solve any matter as is shown here in the end was regulated by law (holmgång, envig etc). It was custom to have a break at will and the right to change shield 3 times. Somtimes the combatans even had to give one strike at the time. But some times the fights wasn't as regulated and called "free fights". This seems to be that kind of fight - even though it was considered less honorable.
Still they have only find one **ONE** helmet in whole scandinavia from this area. Only one! But swords and axes and shields there are plenty of. The conclution is that helms made by iron was very rare. And the horns are even more wrong as that myth was invented during the "1700th century romantic era".
@Noahwig Well is't still wrong and consider as suicied in battle (an axe or sword blow on then will seriusly hurt the neack -may even break it. But yes all the others has ordinay helmets and chainmails.
@sirseigan I agree with all of your points apart from the horses one, if you have watched the movie you would of known that horses were given to the vikings by the polish king once they landed on the polish soil.
@eldiabllo1989 if so it could be regarded as correct - IF it was in 1050-1100. Before 1000 AD scandinavians did not use "cavalry chock" on horses in battle.
@sirseigan And also swords were really rare, but this guys are swedish vikings - varyags as the slavs called them and they conquered by dry land. It is possible that they had horses. Vikings were quite aware of the importance of a cavalry - for example the first thing the danes did before they started conquering England was to get horses.
@sirseigan One more thing - i just saw the whole movie and it is about internal slavonic wars and these vikings were just paid to fight and they were given horses by the slavi Knjaz
WTF??!?!?!?!?! i have never heard anything about the vikings killing each other in that way. i have always been told from people who knows alot about vikings and from books that if they had to die in battle it was against the enemy and not the comrads
And yes there are NO evidence thet Vikings used cavalry in battle - it became popular 100-200 years later in sweden. But of course they used horses for movement some times.
Viking battle in "Fylking" ( a close battle formation shaped as a triangle) on fot most of the time.
If you read about the sea battle at svolder King Olav Tryggvesson and his closest warriors jumped overboard and was never seen again asa last result when all hope was out. The jarl had given his word and a honsest word was suppose to be more worth then life. I don't know what kind of deal the got here but if it was be taken as slaves or executed this could be considerd a better fate if the had promised not to attack.
haha just like in '99 when NATO attacked Serbia...bravery,tactic and intelligence made fool out of stinking USA! Of course latter they started bombing hospitals, schools, bridges and market districts and called that a victory!6 years old Milica with a avio-bomb shrapnel in her head is they greatest bombing campaign achievement!!!Bravo western warriors, bravo NATO!!!
and blocking yourself and your comrade to your left side with the shield, have spearmen behind the shieldwall and follow the orders the commander is giving you. Now you get more of it...
No - they are speaking some sort of finnish-swedish with terrible accent (but I can understand them). So it's not Norwegian. Andthat is mor historical correct. Norweigan and Danes went west, Swedish went east - at least most of the times.
Just show you how much vikings did'nt give a fuck and how tuff they where.. Because at the end when they killed each other that should have been a big fuck you to those slavs..
no no your all wrong, he must be a serb... if he was famous and from anywhere in europe then he must have been a serb... oh and sorry when spelling serb it must always be capitalized "SERB".... *sarcasim*

dude stuff on wikipedia can be posted there by anyone, if you'd believe everything it says must mean that you apparantly arn't the brightest one .wikipedia is not a reliable resource
They are not Vikings. Read the book "Stara Basn" (The Old Story) by J.I. Kraszewski. They're Germans and Pomorans ;) But movie was great (in my opinion).
That video is not fact. Vikings never had horn on theyre helmets. And they barely even had horses. They djust ran berserk. It was us Scandinavians that invented berserk.
only one has celtic style horns on his helmet the use of horses was common but not on such a scale saying that they all ran berserk is just a retarded thing to say
and yes congatulations the word and term berserk is from scandinavia ...
macadonians alexander the great ive heard he was half serb his mother was raped by serb war party after her father was talkin shit phillip the great was not his actual father his mom was just so hot that phillip dident care why you think he was so bad ass

There is a little difference between slavs and Vikings, I prefer you call vikings for scandinavians or northmen though since scandinavians and northmen are the modern vikings, or their heritage. In this scene there are swedish vikings of course, they even speak swedish:P Polish actors though, you can hear that on their swedish accent lol
We are differnt baranches of the same tree !!! Slavs , Germans its a same thing.. On ruussian lenguage odin means number one, for a lighting ruussian say molnaja (which is equal with mjollnir we Serb say munja) etc.. after all this is a movie and i belive 99,9 % of these actors are Polish, and its hard to make some huge differnces between vikings and Slavs they look same, and they are same..In holywood movie 13-th warrior the actor who play a viking king Bulvaj is the SERB (Vladimir Kulic)..

WTF??!?!?!?!?! i have never heard anything about the vikings killing each other in that way. i have always been told from people who knows alot about vikings and from books that if they had to die in battle it was against the enemy and not the comrads
FreakyGremlinDK 2 years ago
That because Vikings hardly used Cavalry in battle.
WolfWotN 2 years ago 2
And yes there are NO evidence thet Vikings used cavalry in battle - it became popular 100-200 years later in sweden. But of course they used horses for movement some times.
Viking battle in "Fylking" ( a close battle formation shaped as a triangle) on fot most of the time.
sirseigan 2 years ago 2
If you read about the sea battle at svolder King Olav Tryggvesson and his closest warriors jumped overboard and was never seen again asa last result when all hope was out. The jarl had given his word and a honsest word was suppose to be more worth then life. I don't know what kind of deal the got here but if it was be taken as slaves or executed this could be considerd a better fate if the had promised not to attack.

Isnt it Norwegian that they speak?
Graldosharpfang2 3 years ago
No - they are speaking some sort of finnish-swedish with terrible accent (but I can understand them). So it's not Norwegian. Andthat is mor historical correct. Norweigan and Danes went west, Swedish went east - at least most of the times.

Just show you how much vikings did'nt give a fuck and how tuff they where.. Because at the end when they killed each other that should have been a big fuck you to those slavs..

DarkLordOfSweden 1 year ago
@marenr4semper It's some kind of weird swedish. I hear:
1) "Ring" (means: Ring)
2) "Ge upp annars stupar ni allihopa" (give up otherwise you will all die) (finnish accsent).
(The important we recognised as [cant understand] for each one of us).
4) "Jaart - jorden av jora" (Jaart - the earch of jora).
5) "Svär vid solen att ni skall hålla ert löfte" (Swear on the sun that you shall keep your promise)
sirseigan 1 year ago
@sirseigan
6) "Svär vid oden" - "Vid oden" (Swear on odin - on Oden).
7) "Synd om dig" (Poor you)
8) "Jag lever fortfarande" (I'm still alive)
9) "Inte nu längre" (Not any more)
10) "In med dig / Din jävel" (in with you / you devil) - hard to hear the difference.
11) "Kom igen" "Döda honom" "Sigvard" (Come on! Kill him! Sigvard [a name])
All is said with a "finnsih" accent or polish/russian accent.

varangianguard01 3 years ago
Och deras yxor
Lucayen 3 years ago
varangianguard01 3 years ago
Allvarligt.

varangianguard01 3 years ago
I didnt check on wikipedia dumbass. Im from sweden and we read about our forefathers all the time.
Lucayen 3 years ago
ok that may be but why do you post nonsence about them ?
varangianguard01 3 years ago

God this movie is epic. Do they have it in english anywheres? And it's just my opinion, but I really think the viking could have killed that guy.
BelligerentAuthority 3 years ago
They are not Vikings. Read the book "Stara Basn" (The Old Story) by J.I. Kraszewski. They're Germans and Pomorans ;) But movie was great (in my opinion).

BULLSHIT !
do you have evidence ?
varangianguard01 3 years ago
That video is not fact. Vikings never had horn on theyre helmets. And they barely even had horses. They djust ran berserk. It was us Scandinavians that invented berserk.
Lucayen 3 years ago 2
only one has celtic style horns on his helmet the use of horses was common but not on such a scale saying that they all ran berserk is just a retarded thing to say
and yes congatulations the word and term berserk is from scandinavia ...

RUNALISTMANN 3 years ago
Vladimir Kulic, the Viking King in the 13th warrior is Czech not Serbian.
