This was always one of my favorite monologues in a movie, it's just Charlie speaking to whomever would listen. Unfortunate at the time no one understood what he was trying to say in this film. So common place now to speak out about world issues, very risky then. Charlie was a legend.
His message is indeed still needed. It's needed more than ever in times such as these. And if the love and goodness that he speaks of is truly absent from human hearts, let it be inserted. I believe in humanity, I love humanity. I pray that this love is warranted, and that my faith in my species is not the musing of a naive fool.
This is needed from us MORE THAN EVER!!!! 2011 now & we are still not waking up to the Corruption!! The Greed!!! The Killing!! The Lying!!!! The Cheating!! The Criminal System that you & I live in. It belongs to all of us not just the few. Especially not just for the global business corporations that control our governments for their own profit & rapage of us & of the earth!! What a guy Mr Chaplin Legend!!!
Amen. If I ever had the right to agree to something, let it be used on you sir. I agree. This video shows of compassion in a great monologue that everyone should hear rather than the trash of the world today. All we know of "great" poetry or passion comes from some guy in a booth speaking about how bad he wants money and women. I'm 19, I'm not really intelligent. But I love a good, passionate speech. It inspires me, if I'm one in a generation of idiots then one is enough.
ever since man was separated due to building the tower of babel - we have yet to come back together as one. perhaps that was the purpose (a test to see if we could) or perhaps even more sadly it was not. Respect where respect is due. My respect to you Mr. Chaplin
That was brilliant and very moving. Love the music. Even if you take out a beleif in god you'd still be left with all the noble sentiment. The morality of western secular society evolved from christian morality and john lennons Imagine is very much like charlies speach.
What the fuck is with the soundtrack? Despite what other viewers seem to think, in my opinion it totally takes away from the scene, if anything as a result of too high a volume. This is one of the most fucking obnoxious trends on Youtube.
A truly astonishing and inspirational speech and moving music! What a Dynamic Duo! The entire monologue (as found in the 4:55 video in the suggestions column) is is even more profound and contains a reference from Luke 17:21 where Jesus states that 'the Kingdom of God is within you' and further makes reference to creating a world where science and progress can lead to everyone's happiness! Amen, the day when Heaven will truly be on Earth!
it's an awesome message, but you didn't have to focus on religion on the description. that's not what chaplin was talking about, he was talking about general love and stuff.
lasse gjertsen. if you go to his channel and find his channel, lassegg, and find 'amateur', he has a link to his blog. there should be a music player of all his music. it's truly brilli!
If only all could understand, and do something about our world. It can easily be worse than it already is, so therefore we must fight to make this world a better place. Not only for yourself, or your closest, but for all. All of us.
Anyone can think these thoughts. But a thought is not enough, not always. So we must act. Quickly.
-Sorry for terrible english, and my excuse is that I am Norwegian, and not so good in English. I have just many thoughts, which is normal.. for a girl, age 14.
I like the music. But, I don't see the point in smothering a good, well written, monologue with it. Creativity is originality. Taking, (stealing) from someone's good, if not great work, is far from creativity. It's a sign of very little talent. It's a sign of cheapness.
You are a nice example of hatefull person. You can see only someone stealing video. Why dont you see Charlie Chaplins art work instead? Answer that yourself.
oh be quiet already. no one really cares if you didn't like the song. make your own video if you know talent and whats "not cheap". its a three minute youtube video for goodness sake. why not take this and go view the whole Chaplin movie now? instead you'd rather pick on the guy showcasing this awesome clip. broaden your mind and stop nagging so much.
If no one cares what I think, fine. But obviously you care enough to reply to my comment. Just like TV. If you don't like what your watching or hearing, change the channel. The whole point of making comments on videos is to express our opinions, whether we agree with each other or not. To cut someone down for their freedom to speak IS FACIST. I don't agree with you, and you don't agree with me. That, my friend is freedom. Maybe you need to broaden your mind.
the really sad thing is, things are only getting worse. everyone who knows has no way of speaking out and doing something about it. unless we all unite!
Forget Ism's. Ism's are what got us into this mess. Capitalism. Socialism. Fascism. Communism. You missed the message. It was a call to the hearts of men. It was a plea to their reason. Not to governments. They are Ism's. Built upon power, by those hungry for power. Covetous and greedy. But to individuals. The power belongs to us, as individuals, you and me, not to a bureaucracy. Not to greedy, covetous men drunk upon power and control and blood. That was the message.
Ok, mixed market then- Pure Capitalism is no good - Pure Socialism is no good- but a mix seems to encourage a stable economy. weapons and war are the chief consumer of taxes. It would be a different world without them.
Meh, wouldn't really work that way. Socialism has its pros and cons, but in the end, you'd have to implement such a program, and to do so would require someone to be doing the implementing. I'm no lasse faire capitalist (that's just ridiculous) but I do believe that the system works a lot better if we don't end up unintentionally racking up the transaction costs for everything left and right.
terga1: by means of the world proletariat we will triumph and will create the Wordly Soviet Socialist Republic with capital in Jerusalem and we will own all the riches of the nations so that the prophecies of our holy prophets of Talmud be fulfilled. Karl Marx
Meh, Communism has failed throughout the 20th century. Even China has basically ceased to be communist (and now is just a totalitarian government that is adding more and more free market enterprise without managing to increase the freedom of the people). That's not to say capitalism isn't perfect, and that some of the things Marx said didn't have merit, but the way of going about doing it has basically been proven wholely incorrect-at least when done on such a large scale.
its about god damn time someone said that!!! im not a communist in any way but it has good points i just think people are so brainwashed they don't understand it in canada we learn about it and its not in a positive nor a negative light its neutral all political structures are flawed and some dont work for certain countries for example, canada isn't completely democratic it's a mixture of everything really not a lot of ppl know that its got bits and pieces of socialism in there
A truly great monologue. Chaplin finally opens his mouth, and pure poetry comes out. The background music you added makes it even more inspirational. Great stuff.
@wheeljak Chaplin was an ACTOR! He spoke what he was told to speak! He did not make up his mind on these things as shown. It was the script writer! Do not glorify single individuals! Otherwise you become sheep.

@DJRapthor Sorry DJ, but Chaplin , not only acted in this movie, not only did he write the music and perform it, not only did he direct it, Charlie Chaplin wrote it. His words, he deserves the praise.

We who was brought up and are young now who is brought up in the 70s 80s and 90s.. we are old enough to change things! We can make thing to change for our children to come.... LOL! no if you look back in history it shows that the german people loved hitler HE promised them all money and to make germany powerful, while in Chaplin saw through his lies and made fun of hitler while everyone ostrisized Chaplin and about 1940 Chaplins message became clear that Chaplin was right all along.
