It's AMAZING how Salonga has grown into the role of Fantine: from this moment before she started her stint on Broadway and had just started studying Hugo's book thoroughly, to her spectacular and very informed performance in Les Miz's 25th anniversary in October 2010 where she showed her ACTING AND VOCAL SUPERIORITY over the great Patti Lupone and the much-overrated Ruthie Henshall. It's no surprise that critics have dubbed Salonga as THE Legendary Fantine!

This was NOT Lea's best by far and still it's was outstanding. For those who yearn for a more 'earthy' version of Fantine, I suggest viewing a clip of Lea's actual onstage performance or perhaps her appearance at the 'Broadway in Bryant Park' where she sang with only a piano accompaniment. IMHO Lea sings this song better than anyone else.....she is actually acting as well as singing when she performs. BRAVO; we are all blessed to have heard her.

I don't know so much about the "roughness" you speak of. This is fantastic. the softness of those notes means so much. the feeling we get with the thought of a young girl being left with a child from a love of the summer. I like it. i like Patti. i like Ruthie. I love Debbie Byrne. I love Evelyn Falconer. this is different. this is lea's version. she's allowed that.

There are many reasons why millions view her video. BGT can't be watched at the same time in other countries so when they heard about SB, they go to YouTube. Her age and looks made her voice and singing seem so extraordinary as it wasn't expected. That now diverts people from thinking of economic woes and talk about her, watch and listen to her instead. YouTube wasn't ready for the other singers during their time but they have their CDs or albums which fans can buy. May Susan last like them.

I think she sang it better in Bryant Park than in concert halls or even in the play. For me that is the test of a great singer, to sing beautifully in an open space without the orchestra, no back up, and with all the distractions around and still hold the audience captive.
