  • no gameplay? bullshit

  • I wanted an ST for Christmas the year this came out. Imagine my pissed off face when I opened the present to find an XE :-(

I gave it a go and got bored very quickly. And I struggled to find any games for it. Ended up buying the commodore 64 hollywood pack with platoon and the great escape games.

  • My first system. I won it in a competition. It was great. But not amazing.

  • So god dam gentle.......

  • SHOW GAMEPLAY!

  • Kids kids, back in the day game consoles were really sturdy, they could handle some real damage, and they still do.

  • Comment removed

  • Why do you handle all of your stuff so roughly?

  • i have this system hooked up to my tv right now lol

  • The color of the buttons look like candy.

  • I know you collect like every system in the world and all, but the atari xe is one of the most rare game consoles ever. you would make a fortune off of it.

  • @coolman1437 are u serious? i have one of those

  • @glove8888 :O dude u could make sooo much money! probably around 300 to 500$

  • @coolman1437 your bull shitting me right

  • @glove8888 No, its really worth it to collectors.

  • damn that space bar is huge

  • this is the atari i had as a kid! found memories. i never knew what model it was because we just called it "atari". thanks gamester!

  • @Gamester81 I was looking to buy a 8 bit atari system and was wondering if the XE or the 800 would be better to get? I'm also planning to get the Atarimax cart for it also. It has one of my fav games of all time Blue Max and now that you talked about the full ver of DK on it I'm really looking forward to getting this system. Did you do a review of DK for this and how close to the arcade is it? Thanks for all the great Videos I'm a big fan of your channel.

  • do you really have to bang s*** around......

  • @zoopop22 grown men aren't gingerly like with equipment

  • @zoopop22 do you really have to censor your own words...

  • If Atari released another game system today they'd swear it was better than Xbox and Playstation because it can play arcade classics like Pac man and Defender. And they'd have an inovative gimmick like a plug in fax machine, or a port to which you could attach an analog clock. It would play some kind of disc, but there would be no cover to the disc tray. And they would have drink holders built in to the controlers...

  • OMG, I have not seen one of those in ages, my friend and I used to play on that all the time!

  • Will the XEGS work with all the classic Atari 400 cartridges like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Parker Brothers stuff like Frogger?

  • I had this thing as a kid. Rescue on Fractalus ftw!

  • Wow. John is it true that every single major Electronics company had a game console in their history?

  • @Nedspodos Pretty much. A number of toy companies and computer manufacturers have as well. I've been researching this for years, and I'm still finding things I'd not heard of. I'd recommend searching the console libraries. I've not found a 100%-complete list yet, but there are some pretty comprehensive ones there. It can get pretty interesting. And actually YouTube is a great resource. This channel is legitimately one of the best. Good luck! Hope you find what you're looking for.

  • This was my first ever computer / games machine. Man I was like 5 when my parents got me it for christmas. Can remember hearing my dad playing Ms Pac Man as I lay in bed after my bed time! I still have this machine in working condition in a box in my loft :)

  • I'm 13 and iwas thinking about when i have kids the ps3 and xbox360 are gunna be retro consoles :)

  • I bid on one of those on ebay once....

  • I always thought this was a more powerful version of the 7800? Am I rite or is it older than the 7800?

  • @fireheartis1 It's less advanced than the 7800. It's based on the 5200/400/800/XL.

  • @fireheartis1

I think that the 7800 is more powerfull, since this XE Game System is in fact based on The Atari 8bit home computer line which started end 1978 / early 1979. There are some slight differences between the original Atari 400, and this XE system (the original Atari 400 came with the CTIA chip in stead of the newer and better GTIA chip; and this computer has some more memory and a newer OS version). But that's all the improvement. The 7800 is newer (and better)

  • @fireheartis1 u have d best name

  • @TheMeteorMonkey Thanks my name is actually from when I was a Pro Wrestler on the indie seen. Unfortunately I was injured by a careless new comer. It was fun while it lasted though. DFTBA

  • i remember my dad had one, great old machine

  • rofl i love the subtitles :D @ 6:46 "for scheming yasir arafat so it looks like delicate role stock "

  • What's funny are that the colors of those buttons make me crave Sweet Tarts.

  • I still have that system and a bunch of games for it! :-)

  • @PeromyscusLeucopus Really? Can I have it? I love atari!

  • @ClOuDsTaR159

Unfortunately I'm not planning on selling mine, but I often see Atari XE systems and games pop up for sale on eBay, some at very good prices when people are just trying to clear out their collections. =^.-=

  • Fight Simulator? trolololo

  • you are the biggest and most awesome video game collector nerd I have ever seen. You have so many items that any collector would kill to get for, A thousand Internets to your sir!

  • love your video's man, keep doing what your doing!

  • @bengativo6 I remember typing in all those codes in the manual as well.I was so annoyed with the big bang code, took me nearly 30 mins to type it all in (always checking you didn't make a mistake) and it was over in about 5 secs.

  • 1981 A GREAT YEAR TO BE BORN WE GOT TO GROW UP IN THE OLD DAYS BEFORE ALL THIS NEW CRAP TOOK OVER ALL THESE SPOILED YOUNGSTERS HAVE NEVER EVEN PLAYED NINTENDO FROM 1985 AND WHEN I SAY ATARI I MIGHT AS WELL BE TALKING CHINESE

  • @DREQON2005 i have an atari 2600. i dont have a nintendo, but i love playing the 8-16 bit games. DONT CAPS LOCK IT IS AWKWARD WHEN YOU READ IT.

  • @DREQON2005 i was born in 96 and i know what an atari 2600 was and i have played it i also have a NES hooked up in my room

  • I remember seeing this about for a very short while. Were there any games that made practical use of the keyboard?

  • i love that console,i had that instead of the 2600,very cool console.

  • You should invest in a try pod for showing the console, it would make it a lot easier for you, and make the videos seem more professional. Great review.

  • i dont like the pink and blue and yellow buttons

  • OH SHIT BUG HUNT !!! DAMN THAT CARTRiDGE BROUGHT ME A NEW MEANING OF LiFE !

  • i had one of thoose atari xe machines.. i sold it 12 years ago for 100NOK.. that is 12 euros today..

    i regret it :(

  • I'm assuming this system doesn't work by the way u r treating it throwing the components around etc

  • For any females willing to fork over their vagianas...please press 666 =

  • This system was a stupid, STUPID thing to do in 1987. Jack Tramiel, you douche. You killed Atari!

  • wow, that is one straaaaaaaaaaaaange looking system!

  • The Bug Hunt cartridge will work in the older ones. It deffo works in the 800XL.

  • @wisteela It will work even on 400 with 64kb ram.

  • Looks like this game is pretty advanced in looks for it's time. It could easily be like an 1990 system.

  • how do i save programs to floppy disk form basic i try save "d1kevin.bas" but does nt work

  • The expansion port on the back looks like an Atari 5200 controller port.

  • The way you handle your systems and games, it gives me goosebumps. It's miracle that they even work anymore! :O

  • nice intro there bro

  • You never show game play. XD

  • i used to have the atari xe....loved it

  • Does it work with a standard ATARI 400/800 power supply?

  • Does this one have four controller ports like the Atari 800? How's the OS? Is there one built in?

  • 8 Capcom accounts

  • Man that is one ugly console.. sorry ;D

  • That console is F-Ugly!

  • UHH UHH UHH UHH UHH UHH UHH UHH UHH UHH

  • hey quick Q.. where do u plug in the controllers into ? same port as the keyboard?

btw im addicted to ur videos.. lol

ive been an avid gamer myself ever since i can rmr but i never held onto my systems, since they would just attract alot of dust so donated em... wish i had em whenever i see ur vidz though!

  • the keyboard plug looks like a 5200 plug would it work than again who would do that

  • Thanks for putting this up! It was so great to see my old friend the XE again with its candy-colored buttons and weird diagonal design. I really hope it's still in my mom's basement somewhere...

  • The most advanced system in North-Korea

  • You're like the Vin Diesel of video games :)

  • what didn't atari try to compete with nintendo?

  • Yeah, my first system! Still got it, along with a box full of games.

  • omg thanks gamester THAT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES OF MY MOM BUYING THAT FOR ME BACK IN I THINK 1987? but dude i remember playing Allot of missile command

  • Hook it up bro! lets play some DK!

  • I have one of these along with 2 atari floppy drives and a Atari modem!!

  • I wanted an NES and got an XE, so imagine my disappointment. All the stores were out of the NES so my dad bought me this. It was so outdated, and the games available weren't up to snuff compared to Super Mario Bros. and Zelda. Luckily I got my NES the next year and the XE was quickly put in the closet.

  • My first computer, at twelve year old

  • Can i play World of Warcraft on it? :D

  • love your vid intro :)

  • dude, you are so helpful to me. ive never heard of most of the systems you show!!! SUBBED!!!

  • how do you play missile command on it ?

  • 3.08 i cant believe you just THREW that gem LOL. like the guy from everyone loves raymonds brother

  • I love your reviews man! You just make my day better to just sit back and watch one of your retro console reviews. Thank you so much for the great work and i will be looking out for more videos.

  • I would like to see this game in action ? do you have any video of this system ?

  • in this video it sais that XE had a biger collection than the NES ww w. youtube. com/watch?v=ws3PcFqBLdQ&feature=related

  • Reminds me of the movie Cloak & Dagger (1984)

  • i got this computer as a deal package just before they stopped selling them in the uk

it came with bug hunt centipede a flight sim type game and a huge computing manual which you could use the word processor to launch different commands

anyways it rocked back when i had it

it was a interesting peice of kit

  • you really took it back with this one

  • 2600-5200-7800 AND XEGS are ALL 8 bit game systems

  • Well, this system just shows Atari struggled to re-establish themselves in video games segment after Tramiel's "there's no more console market" switch. All Atari 80s video game consoles suffered from that desicion. Delayed Jr. and 7800. They were releasing all those old-technology consoles in the wrong time, too late. This system (surely better designed than 5200) should have been out in 1982 to have a chance.

  • What do you mean not "near the quality of a Nintendo or Sega Master system"? 4:45.

Also, older CRT style computer monitors work EXACTLY like older style *CRT* TVs.

  • I have one of these, They rock!!!

  • I bought this system back in summer 1994 at a flea market in germany. It came as a complete system with the original box, light gun, flight simulator II, Bug Hunt, Centipede, a controller. I bought it for approx. 8 US$.

  • I had a 65XE :)

  • man about how much money have you spent on these systems

  • You forgot to metion the lynx

  • No game play?

  • I found one of these at a garage sale once. But at the time the guy wanted $80.00 for the set up. If only i knew then what I know now. -_- He had about 20 carts for it, Monitor, gun & everything >_<

  • I counted you said "uhh" 99 times in the video

    No kidding

  • @Lufttygger306 I think you're the only person who would count how many times someone says "uhh" in a YouTube video

    No kidding

  • @rejectofsoul24 I was bored

    No kidding

  • is a Xegs all the hookups a controoler an gun and 2 games for 80 dollars and it works a good deal

  • im 23 and I think ill still appreciate vintage video game systems when im 40

  • HEY! I HAD THAT! :D

  • When you said Backwards compatible with most 8 bit software, is this because it's a game system version? Because there is a commodore 64 game system not compatible with all the software whereas the original does. Would the other 2 XE computers (65 & 130) work with all the software or is it still limited?

  • I live in Los Angeles, and in 1987 we bought this system straight from Federated Electronics (owned by Atari Corp at the time which was like a Best Buy or Circuit City).Pretty much all they sold was Atari in regards to video gaming department. I remember also having a modem for this computer that you could call other BBS's and Atari’s. It was neat because it also played almost every other 800 game.

  • Atari stopped production on it in 1990, but I remember Atari in Sunnyvale, Calif sending me game lists and computer hardware lists. An Atari employee told me that the mushy keyboard was to be a relax on the fingers compared to the clicky click keyboards of that area.

  • This is what the Atari 5200 should have been. Minus the pastels of course. Give it 1982 styling and it would be perfect.

Consolizing the A8 computer was a great idea in it's day, hell it was originally supposed to be a game console to begin with. It's a shame it took them until 1987 to do it properly.

  • gosh, I'm 33 years old but you look older...

If you claim to be 29 that would state in your mind non as an assumed fact

  • you kinda look like tom merello from rage against the machine

  • @Gamester81 I see that you have a cart labeled "Star Raider". I imagine that it's the same game as Star Raiders...could it be an earlier revision (the cart I have has the same product number)?

  • Informative yet boring as fuck.

  • Nice review! I remember playing a boxing game on the XE years ago at a friend's house. I think it may have been Fight Night, but am not sure.

  • you said uhh 5 times within the first 20 seconds lol

  • @brickman409 Yeah one of my earlier videos. I've improved a lot. I don't use scripts when I do my videos either.

  • @Gamester81 me neather

  • Interesting that you chose to review really obscure video game systems. It's a good thing. It allows me to relive the past. Ahhhhhhhhh..... The memories.

  • I used to own a XE. I remember owning Bug Hunt which was a light gun game, Missile Command and Battle Zone.

  • @arfank199 It's the shitty lighting when I filmed this. I'm 29.

  • @Gamester81

    29 my ass

  • @Gamester81 plus 11,, lol

  • @Gamester81 It doesn't matter how old you are. I don't care if you were 105 as long as you made this video. I think you did a great job! Thank you! keep up the good work!

  • @Gamester81 lol im 34 and i look like a damn 24 year old man ,but yea i had this xe system for my birthday back on 1987 or 1988 ,i was like between 11 and 12 , i remember the games such as baseball named hardball ,crosbow, flight simulator 2,bughunt ,and the one included mission command ,donkey kong jr.and manny other i used to type in the computer mode and did all the programs on the manual ,i really regret throwing it out like some 10 years ago ,i wish i could go back in time and save it

  • @Gamester81 lol

  • @arfank199 Hahahaha he's the 40 year old virgin lmfao. What a fucking dork! =D

  • @UberLifeTroll he is married and probably gets more action then you

  • @UberLifeTroll dude shut the fuck up you fucking cunt why don't you go outside and go play hide and go fuck yourself

  • @arfank199 You can always tell when some moron is going to insult someone by the "no offense" statement. That just means they are too cowardly to take responsibility for what comes out of their mouth.

Like this: "No offense, but from your post I would guess that you are an idiot".

  • Comment removed

  • @ovj4 Does that really work for you? I mean that "stfu" thing... Are people scared of you when you type that?

I realize that you're just a kid, and have no idea how to intellectually express yourself, but really. Isn't it time for you to put on your big boy pants and learn how to type like an adult?

I'm not offended by the age thing. I'm offended by morons that hide behind their cowardliness to make a point. As it seems, a LOT of others agree with me, so take your own advice, child.

  • Comment removed

  • @ovj4 First rule of life that you'll learn is that when someone makes a decent wage, they don't talk about it. By the time you get to that point you may have learned that. Because you try to brag, you are a liar. I would bet McDonald's will be your future for some time. And if you made anywhere near what you say, you would really give a fuck about a lot of things, so put away the childish nonsense.

Don't be late for work. There are a lot of people wanting to flip burgers these days.

  • Comment removed

  • @ovj4 It's good that children dream. Don't let your dreams become so mixed with your reality. You still have a lot of growing up to do. If you start at your tender young age telling such lies no one will be able to trust you.

Don't worry, I don't get "roused" by children, I put them in their place. I doubt that I'll be anywhere around D.C. any time soon, and I don't rent. 21 year olds rent. Business owners, own.

  • @tomperanteau yea man u win.. u put me in my place dude... i guess i am a liar and i work at mc d's but since u seem so strong in ur opinion ill delete my mesages and stfu myself.... but honestly man the world is changing not all young ppl are uneducated and broke...

  • i still have this in my closet lol

i dont know is it funcional...haven't started it in like...15-20 years lol

te console and keyboard and joystick where operational...bat the gun got broken...won't work

there was 2 game shipping in package...some bugs to shoot with gun...and flight simulator(with some red baron option in it...like...mod? lol )

and there was missile command onboard

never could find any games for it here...even back in the late 80s/early 90s

    how much does it worth?

  • pastel buttons....lovely

  • @azmanntoz Not much unlike PS1 styling, huh.

  • I still have one of those things in my garage, my dad got it to me in 1987, i was 6!!

Then i first moved to a c64, then to an amiga 500 and to a SNES.

Then the first PlayStation came out, i've been craving for it!! Imported was insanely expensive here in Italy, so i had to wait for the official release. After the PS i had a Dreamcast and last one an xBox first edition. two portables a game boy original and a game gear. Flight simulator II for thi system was stupid, insnaely complicated.

  • Your reviews are great, but how do you afford all this stuff?

  • I owned one of these but never got to play it because it never worked, only paid $2 for it at a yard sale. it came with lode runner and another game for it (think it was bug hunt). i was a little bit mad when it would not work, it would power up though. think it was a video output issue (wasn't the cables).

  • i got this for my 12 birthday back in 88 and i ended up throwing it out to the trash bin on 1999.i really regret it .i shouldve kept it.

  • Comment removed

  • @garnett9295 I found it at a garage sale a long time ago actually.

  • Nice review. The 7800 was test marketed in 1984, but wide-released in 1986.

  • My cousin had this!

    was horrid.

  • Does this play Atari ST games?

  • No. This was an 8 bit system.

  • @UliJones Thanks - I was unsure. This system is still pretty cool though.

  • HOW DO I HOOK IT UP TO A TV!???

    i need to know! haha

    please!

  • @humanslayermil Like any other retro system with RF cables. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

  • @Gamester81 It also had composite A/V out which gives a better picture (I think you forgot about those connections, may be wrong). Also, I think you hold either Option or Select with the keyboard plugged in to play Missile Command. Without the keyboard, it auto-starts the game.

  • @Gamester81 Actually, Jon, it supports composite video and audio as well due to a couple of RCA ports. Should look a smidge better.

  • great videos man. your collection is very extensive!

  • This was my first computer. Got it in 1989. My mom thought that getting an Atari from the get go would be a good way to get the need for video games out of my system and focus on computers. She believed that Atari was on it way out, so I wouldn't be interested in the company after a while. As you can see by my username, that plan failed miserably. ;-)

  • I really want to own one of these systems, especially after seeing how good the Donkey Kong and Pac Man ports are. I sorta like the design too, the light grey with different colored buttons and the ridges sort of remind me of the Playstation 1 for some reason.

  • with that hat on, you look a lot like Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, don't know if anybody else thinks so, but i enjoy your videos, keep up the good work

  • i seen it at my flea market

  • Looks like an Atari ST! I miss my old 1040....

  • I had one of these back in the day mate. I brought it with a friend 2nd hand with the idea of sharing it. I had it for a month and then I gave it to him... and that was the last I saw of it ha ha!! Wasnt a great system anyway I thought? Cheers ;o)

  • Grey and pastel...that's so mid to late eighties.
