I far prefer listening to a luscious voluptuous voice than a thin one - especially when it has the degree of power and clarity as Damrau's. I still think Callas' Regnava is hard to beat, but really I don't like to compare voices.
I am growing to like Damrau very very much. I feel that she is a magnetic performer.
Damrau was born to play this role. Netrebko struggles to sing coloratura pieces. She pushes herself out of her vocal range and you can see it in her performance. It's always like she's fighting the music to stay in range. Damrau is a natural and well within her range, so is an ease to watch because she can just flow with it...
as much as i am concerned thay might have 'stayed home' and hired Eric Cutler, who was amazing, fabulous Edgardo (!) in Sydney last year, as different from, our quite miserable, Emma Mathews, i'll never regret no starting booing her (at least i should have yelled "we can't hear you!!") - at $300, more or less, you would like to hear all the Lucia's bits BEFORE 'spargi..'
@branko1b If you can't hear Emma Matthews in the Sydney Opera House, maybe you should ask your government to FINISH THE DAMN BUILDING before bagging out that gem of a songbird, who has recently made her Covent Garden debut, for anyone who cares.
@Lilith89ibz Ill join you on that strike!!! Then we can demand a DVD of Damrau in Die Zauberflote as well, since the Taymor version in German is woefully missing. Does the Met have a Damrau bias? LoL
@compazine yes, in fact they do. they think Damrau is all 'arms movements and overacting' they (Met audience) not only prefer Netrebko but that they actually believe (believe it or not!) that Netrebko can actually sing - a good friend of mine even thinks that she has advanced somehow (from where to what?!) - what people see and hear, and what it turns into in their heads, is strange - often bizarre . .. i hope to hear Damrau live one day and would pay any money NOT to hear some other singers
@Drelnis Because she's so pretty and has such a full heavy voice. I think a lot of people (for some bizarre reason) associate a heavy voice with opera. Which is odd. But its mostly because she's so pretty.
@Lilith89ibz You're one of the few people who doesn't succumb to the spell of giant eyes? xD I personally think she's gorgeous( But Diana is too, so maybe there's some strings Anna's pulling?) What do you mean not so great body? Last I saw her she was very curvacious. Has she gotten chubby or something? It was so hard to type this comment, I kept getting distracted by Diana's brilliance in the background.
@RaWrZzZz Cute xD No, I don't find Netrebko attractive at all. Nice legs, but that's about it. She has gotten a little chubby, with the round face and all, but I really wouldn't care if she could sing!
@Lilith89ibz HA! I paused it this time! I think she has a nice voice, but DAMMIT she needs to stay away from coloratura pieces. Maybe if she stuck to mezzo roles, and used better breathing, she'd get a lot more respect. Maybe if we protest we could get a DVD of Diana? Or Dessay, I adore both.
i saw her do this role live, and it was the first time in a long time that i was so incredibly moved by her performance. The clips I heard of Dessay doing Lucia were brilliant also. Either one of these ladies should've gotten the broadcast!!
Yeah, and instead we got Netrebko, who can't seem to sing anything above the staff in pitch these days. I don't understand why Damrau and Dessay is not getting the kind of media attention Netrebko is getting.
In my local store there's like 2 Dessays, 1 Damrau, 10 Netrebkos.
I don't understand what's so special about Netrebko, she's not even a coloratura for god's sake, and she's getting all these Bel Canto DVDs that Damrau and Dessay is not getting!
Diana Damrau has become my favourite Soprano. Having watched the BBC Magic Flute DVD, and then buying two of her CDs she has completely won me over with her amazing art.
Thank you Lilith89ibz for posting this (these) videos :)
I highly recommend that you check her Hansel and Gretel on youtube - maggeo posted the entire thing and it is one of my playlists. She plays Gretel and Angelika Kirchschlager is Gretel, for the Royal Opera House in London.
I think it´s hard to compare Dessay and Damrau performances, they are amazing ! I would never say that one is better than other - you can easily see good and not good things in both Lucias, but I can assure : both touched my hearth and that's what really matters to me.
Damrau is living up to my expectations. She truly is a magnificent artist. For a role debut, she is singin' her tail off! She sounds much better than Dessay did last year.
As much as I adore Dessay, I have to agree with you. Dessay was really working hard just to come in the vicinity of the notes. Damrau made it look and sound like the easiest thing in the world. I was at the October 3 performance---her role debut---and it was a wonderful evening. She was received like a queen. There were even a few (unsubstantial) calls for a bis after "Spargi d'amaro pianto".

Damrau and Netrebko seem to perform a lot of the same works and Damrau win!

Utterly spectacular. Amazing.
saagua1953 1 year ago
Netrebko did not get any bonus with that DVD, because she did not deliver a Lucia to the same standard as Damrau here.
Her characterisation and coloratura were both problematic.
This role isn't her cup of tea definitely.
Who was Damrau's Edgardo in this production?
Cissy97 2 years ago
Her Edgardo was Piotr Beczala :)

Please tell me there is a video recording of this, of Damrau's spectacular performance.
Oh why does Netrebko get a DVD of Lucia at the Met and not Damrau!!!!!!!

Nobody is sadder about it than I am, but there is no video... We should go on strike in front of the Met and ask for one lol

@RaWrZzZz I really don't think she is pretty at all. Common face and not so great body. Specially after having the kid.

People say its because of her looks, but to be honest, I think Damrau is a lot more attractive than Netrebko, but that's my opinion anyway.

WONDERFUL TECHNIQUE!

besides Ying Huang (and some older ones, such as Ricciarelli) this is the only 'Regnava...' i have ever heard that is comparable to Moffo's
... i guess, now, Damrau is my favorite living soprano too! :)
many thanks for posting

Yea, both are great, but Dessay belongs to an older generation, and fades out gradually to the new - Damrau.

This performance is particularly exciting when one considers it is her first outing as Lucia. Here's wishing for MANY more! Brava!

do you have the sextett and its following scene?
this is the part, IMO, where the singer conveys the best drama.
