Glenn Campbill, like Jerry Reed, were also masters of the guitar... but the boss for this song has to be Mason WIlliams and the instrumentation backing him up didn't hurt either... but solo he is also brilliant.
I love it but could you imagine this on a clean nylon string like a Taylor NS74 or Kilchenstein (only one in the world). The Kilchenstein is modeled after the early Herman Hauser Segovia model. Glen probably played that on an Ovation nylon string. It has a boxy tone but strong and present. It sounds live. I still think it sounds great but 99% because of playing bad ass guitar.
In the 60&70s while we all worshiped hendrix, clapton, gilmour, hell even eddie van halen...roy clark ,glen campbell.and jerry reed were doing amazing things on guitar!!!so underated these guys were!!
Awesome!! And just when I thought I had all the versions of this song on my Classical Gas playlist...this is great, and gladly added!!! Thanx a million for posting it!
golfbuddy... I have the DVD of Glenn Campbell, and yes it is Glen Campbell playing this song (Not Roy Clark) BUT... It is also Glen Campbell who is saying to himself to play it right, Not your classmate Jim Stfford. Like I said, I have the DVD and Glen Campbell is saying it.. no one else is talking for him. He's making a little joke hoping that he doesn't mess up playing this song.
I love Roy Clark but if you listen to the intro that is a former high school classmate of mine, JIM STAFFORD saying "GLEN - PLAY IT RIGHT" so this version is GLEN CAMPBELL playing on a classical guitar. Roy Clark mostly plays this on Electric Guitar although he is most capable on anything with strings on it!!
@golfbuddy45 Yes, you're correct, this is Glenn's version, not Roy's. Glenn is the only other person I can even stand playing it other than Mason of course.
Absolutaly not Roy clark they are called Area Code 615. Their cover of Classical Gas, from the 1970 "Trip in the Country" album is sampled and featured in the Latest (Jan 2010) UK & Irish Guinness TV Commercials. This was originally released in 1969 and they hail from Nashville, Tennessee.
I'll take Chet Atkins version over all of them

why is roy on here, this is Glenn?

The only problem is that's not Roy Clark, that's Glenn Campbell. It's a picture of Roy but the music and the voice at the beginning are Glenn.

@MrMZaccone You totally called it. The announcer even says "Glenn"

@imjeffman It's not like it should have been a mystery to anybody.

Hell yea...Loved Roy as a kid when dad had Hee Haw on. If it had strings Roy could play it.

I'm surprised Tommy Emmanuel hasn't popped up in the related videos. Check it out if you like this tune.

I don't normally like versions with backing musicians, but this is just so well done.
