I was snorkling where the Weeki Wachi meets the Gulf at Pine Island beach and had 2 adults and a calf swim up out of the channel and start playing with me. 2 foot visability and one swam right up into my mask. SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME!!!
the trips you go on to fidn manatees in inhumane u wake them and scratch there backs even if they have boat wounds and they cant have peace leave them alone
these aren't captive, and if they come up to you I think it's ok. Waking them up and rubbing their bellies could hardly be described as inhumane. I think Sea World is horrible, but this seems ok, no?
i agree a wild animal even one as beautiful as a manatee should not be interacted with. Although I am jealous I have always wanted to interact with these gorgeous animals
crystal river needs to not let people interact with the manatees. there is no supervision and many people do not follow the rules which is not good for the manatees! you shouldn't be allowed to ever touch a wild animal, not even 'with only one hand.'
I was working near Jacksonville Florida at a small Shipyard and during lunch break a manatee surfaced a couple feet from me as I was eating. When I moved and he noticed me he submerged and swam away. It was a great moment.

Yes. I know. It was a joke. Please use your head before sending me a comment. Thank you.

My comment was directed more toward those who may read your comment and think that an attack is possible or probable.

You don't wake the manatees here. You have to wait and see if they come up to you.
maattie 4 years ago
looking at the speed they were travling in, shouldnt you be able to swim pass them? -_-

He wasn't feeding it. He was following all of the rules of manatee interaction, which is legal in Crystal River but not other places.
maattie 5 years ago
Was he feeding the animal? Because that is ileagle...just something to keep in mind...

It is against the rules....but tell that to such a peaceful creature.
