Beautiful images capturing such a sad time. They all look so peaceful. I would rather appear to be asleep than look the way morturaries make people look nowadays.
@LIGHT0005 They were murdered and thrown into the river :( Bodies were recovered shortly after. They had met and awful death and may they rest easy now. The murderer was hung 2 months later.
In short On Friday, October 12, 1906, Carny Parsons ( the deceased and family) offered to trade Hamilton twenty-five dollars cash and a single-barreled shotgun for a saddle. Hamilton agreed but later but learned the saddle MAY be stolen. Hamilton fired the shotgun got him in the knee right knee then beat him with the gun. Carney's wife Minnie then tried to wrestle the gun away and got beat.
@redbutterflynine Hamilton then killed two of the Parson's three sons, Frankie and Jesse, beat them and then cutt their throats. Hamilton then returned to Minnie, and killed her with the axe. He dumped the bodies in the river and headed back to town.
Fishermen discovered the bodies of Jesse and the infant Edward floating in the river. Hamilton confessed to the murders and assisted authorities to find the other three bodies.
Hamilton was tried for murder, Jodie tried to plead insanity due to a kick received from a mule as a kid.He was found sane. He was sentenced to be executed on December 21. At 11:02 am in Houston, Jodie's execution was attempted but was unsuccessful. The rope had failed. Two minutes later, after tying another noose on the same rope, Jodie was hanged again. His death was pronounced at 11:15.
@redbutterflynine I'm sorry I was jumping all over in the story. I meant to say two of the boys had been beaten with their throat cut and the third which was the youngest was beaten to death. Sadly the whole family of five had been murdered. Hamilton had money and odds and ends in his pockets that had belonged to the Parson gentleman.
During this time era, people did not take regular photographs or portraits as we do now. In many cases, these postmortem photos were the only picture taken of the person.
Jeeze! How could someone take their DEAD child to the studio to pose with it and sometimes bring others to pose along, too? They were truly made of much stearner stuff back then. I guess because we never have to "handle" the dead like in the past. Whew!
