Breathtaking scene, heartbreaking statement of raison d'etre & motivation for upcoming hunger strike. Preceded by long single take bravura dialogue scene between him & the priest, & followed by silent detergent scene to allow viewers to absorb the arguments. This monologue is surprisingly visualized -cleverly not in its entirety- at the very end of the film, as lyrical tragic coda. Genius writing, genius directing, genius performance. Yes oscars, baftas, palm should have gone to all 3.

This whole scene was so memorable and welcome respite from the brutality and horror of the prison protest scenes. I loved the banter with the priest, the plumes of smoke in the shadows and the that the camera didn't pull into closeups for what seemed like ages, flawless and compelling acting throughout...
