  • Classic!

  • this is the Classic times in the mid '70s when music was happening on "Free Network TV" & no Cable! instead of watching those Stupid Talk Shows that we see today in most channels! Cheers to all who agree! x0]

  • This is amazing! That bass is hittin' right to your bones. I've listened to this song probably 10 times today. I am so glad to have discovered this band!

  • i saw 'mandrill' and 'war' in philly at the spectrum at their dance concerts in the 70's .......best times of my life ........best concerts ever !

  • In philly? my ticket master alerts suck!

  • Saw them last night in Philly. SUPERB! THE best concert I've ever been to...

  • Hey, @neftalisantiago, cheers from Brazil! Mandrill rules! I got some band's CDs and LPs and never get enough of your funky groove. When will you come to play in Rio?

  • Did Mandrill ever cross paths with Jimi Hendrix ?! I know they recorded at the Electric Lady in the NYC which was Jimis studio ! 1970 was the year it officially opened .

  • Says here you guys are going to be at B.B. King's in NYC on Aug. 11. Is that right? I plan to be there!

  • I FUCKING LOVE THESE GUYS !

ONLY THE "REALLY COOL" PEOPLEKNOW ABOUT THESE GUYS.

  • Unless I'm mistaken, I remember this Don Kirshner's event!!

  • Just checkout the intro. Such variety among the groups. Now it just seems like there's just two choices; crap and crappier. Big Mandrill fan in the 70's (Solid, Fencewalk, Beast From the East, etc.).

  • la verdadera mùsica funky.geniales y excelentes mùsicos.

  • Super Funk Groove - You Got To Get Up And Move.

  • I remember listening to Composite Truth back in the early 70's, I was a 13 yr old drummer and Fencewalk blew me away. incredible music still to this day

  • The bassline sounds like Mario Bros. Great song!

  • Much Aloha To Netfali For The Footage,Its A Pity That It Ended Right At the Juicy Part Of The Song :( .As a 49 year old,i used to play congas to mandrill in the 70's,still do till this day.I'll Be funked Up Till The Day I Die.

  • Thanks so much Neftali for this video. Mandrill is so Badass. I love Mandril!

  • I keep coming back on here from time to time, just to check out this clip. For the record, I've only seen one Mandrill CD release, Best Of Mandrill (Polydor), and yes indeed I did buy it (there are probably others available, but I've only personally seen that one). I can't tell you how much I love old school funk/soul/R&B, and this stuff is among the best that genre has to offer, hands down.

  • @elc1960 ,

Thank you. We have been making music since 1970. We have 17 albums which most you can get online iTunes, or amazon. Being a member of the band since 1972 I agree with you hands down we were the best.

  • @neftalisantiago Looking forward to seeing you guys (AGAIN) on August 15th in Philly...

  • Heaven

  • Doc, Ric, Lou, Coffee, Neftali, Omar, Fudgie!!!!

  • @renman16291,

Yea you know my name and all the members, cool!

  • no rap necessary. Mandrill rules. I would skip every concert in Philly for one Mandrill ticket. Watching them walk through he crowd playing Mango Meat remains my favorite concert moment of all time!!!!!!! Who can touch them on stage. NOBODY! F A POP RECORD! LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO KOOL AND THE GANG!

  • @phillymak,

Hey thanks man I am the drummer! The song we walk through the crowd with is "Mandrill". Not mango meat. It's so nice for our fans to have great memories and current thoughts about our band.

  • @phillymak Yeah man, Mandrill is the shit...

  • They came out just as the "Holy Mothership" was about to take off. All funk bands were silenced for years, unless they opened for a Pfunk show.

  • @alwrlw,

Obviously you don't have your facts together. Mandrill' s first album was in 1970. In 73 we headlined having Funkadelics open for our band for at least two years. There was no P-Funk till much later. This thing about being silenced for years, untrue.

  • @neftalisantiago That's right when you came to DC your concert is still the highest grossing concert at RFK stadium, grossing more than the Rolling Stones concert.

  • @neftalisantiago You may be correct. However, when the song "Fence Walk" was being heard on the west coast that was all we knew of Mandrill. What I am stating is that from 75-79, the Funk genre was headed by Parliament/Funkadelic. I was 12 in 1970 and knew nothing about music other than what I heard in church. Thanks for the history lesson, but Pfunk ruled the airwaves, Mandrill did not. Mandrill makes my Top 5 Funk Band List easily.

  • LOL, it is nice to chat with you Mr. Neftalisantiago, well the memories are a little vague considering I was stomped in the stampede after the bottles started to fly. Because of you I switched from Trumpet to Drums and starting playing funk. You were my inspiration back then. I grew up with Jesse from Brass Construction and knew some of the players from Sky, but your group amazed me with how at ease you played all types of music. You really had no label. I have many fond memories of your group.

  • @QV565 ,

Wow! Such a high complement. It feels so good to here theses comments. Thank you so much.

  • I remember when Mandrill played at Randall's Island in NY way back in the day. Most of the groups did not show up and a riot occurred. Mandrill came out and played for hours to calm the crowd. They were the best Funk band ever and it was sad the way they dropped off the map. They were better than Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire,Kool and the Gang. I am proud to say my little Brooklyn NY, funk band made a lot of money playing their songs.LO, God Bless them all !!!!!!!!!!

  • @QV565,

It's amazing to me how many people talk about Mandrill and don't reolize I am the drummer. Of course I was at Randell's Island. All the bands acually showed up but where too scared to perform. We accually only performed for less than an hour before some threw a bottle at me. We left the stage right after that. I was attacked by fans ripping my clothes for keep sakes. Two girls choked me trying to get my scarfe off my neck except I was attached to it still.

  • @QV565

You can read all about this in Wax Poetics issue 24 with Mandrill on the cover.

  • No one I know has even heard of these guys.I funkin love Mandrill,I turn everyone I meet on to them, and everyone loves them after they've heard them.Being in the "punk scene" most people never get the opportunity to hear such beauty. Thanks a thousand fold for posting so much mandrill so I can share with eveyone.Much Luv.

  • @deafcon4 ,

Hey Bro sounds like you don't know who I am.

I posted so many vidieos because it's my history.

Appreciate you didggin on the band.

    I am the drummer.

  • @neftalisantiago Yeah, mang ,I know who you are,you are a big influence on my own musical journey.I don't even remember how I found out about you guys. But I flipped the first time I heard the song "Mandrill".Seriously amazing music, much luv and respect Neftali.

  • @neftalisantiago you tell em homie, brooklyn in the building...im from canarise and heard about mandrill years ago

  • FunK!! Funk!! Funk!!..

  • damn i love this shit!!! big inspiration on my bass playing for my current band.

  • I love you guys...I grew up on Fencwalk and it elevated my love for all kinds of music...Thank you!! MANDRILL..Thank you Neftali Hope you and the guys are well

  • @cappy2008

Your welcome brother. Yes we are all sorta well without getting personal. Keep in touch.

  • @cappy2008,

    hey man your welcome.

  • oh man--I was jammin' this must have been one helluva concert

  • @cosmicjay1

You know it was allot of fun. I am working on getting the full footage from it.

We actually jammed on nation wide television, it was very cool. Can't do that today.

  • @cosmicjay1

yes it was. We actually just out right jammed on National Television, Wow! You can't do that today.

  • this is my all time favorite band. I love playing their stuff.

  • Tempo em que dançar funk era suar a camisa e não escutar um monte de repetições de letras pífias.

    valeu a postagem

    thanks a lot.

  • @santinhoneto

Not sure what your saying but I think it is good comment, yes. Well Thank You!

  • YES!!! Thank you so much for posting this! I've tried for many years to tell people about Mandrill, but no one seems to remember them. When I was 11 I was drawn to the band by their album covers depicting mandrill apes, and figured that any band with such cool albums had to be great. I had the first self-titled album (Mandrill is one of the answers to that trivia question about the bands where an album, song title and group name are the same, along with the Monkees, Bad Company, et al).

  • @elc1960

You know this is what it's all about. People getting the Mandrill messages. Thank You.

  • @neftalisantiago Extremely honored that one of my musical heroes would respond to lil' old me on YouTube. Thank you Neftali! BTW - my uncle Pablo says "Hi!"

  • Hey Neftali,

Just wanted you to know that you and your band members were an inspiration to me and all my musical buddies back in high school---you set the standard for us as far as personal performance and what an ensemble should sound like.

    THANK YOU!!

    God bless you, my brother!

  • awesome! I was just grooving with this last week!

  • Mandrill, sort of like Earth, Wind and Fire, P-Funk, and Santana all in one. They just could never come up with a pop record like those other bands did. And that's what you need have a massive music career in the music business. But they were great just the same.

  • @hankaaron1961

Well you know we did all right. No we didn't compromise our musical integrity for a hit record. Our money was made on stage. We headlined over those bands you talked about, why? because people loved the band and live we were at our best. Concert promoters knew the draw of the band and if you performed with Mandrill in the early 70s it didn't matter how many hit records you had we headline more shows than not.

  • @neftalisantiago My band was at STAX around 1972- 1974 and we never came close to keeping it going the way you guys did however I've seen several comments on the web comparing us to you with regard to content and muscianship first, rather than a pop hit. I was digging on you then and still do and just to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mandrill was the best compliment we ever had.

  • @neftalisantiago Neftali...i was a rocker in the 70's, and when i heard Mandrill, i heard a lot of rock type riffs, like the solo Omar plays over that Am in Fencewalk, and also in Hang Loose. Another one is the verses in Children of the Sun. You guys were the shit, brother. Love the records then and now...

  • @hankaaron1961 It's just like what happened to 60s artists, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, etc. are mentioned time and again, but you never hear about The Cake, Ace of Cups, Lydia Pence, and so many others.

  • @Khultan Exactly. Everyone remembers the Beatles' last show at Candlestick Park in SF, but who remembers who opened the show? (For the record, it was Boston pop-rock band The Remains - their only chart single was "Why Do I Cry" in 1966.)

  • @elc1960 I bought The Remains album not too long ago (I have never heard of them and many other bands of 60s era)

     Mandrill is FONKY.

  • Man I loved the way MAndrill use to get those harmonies just very Manly sounding

You guys are a national treasure!!!!

  • These guys would smash anyone when it comes to groove, cool motha funkers,,its what ya do, ive don classic funk mix which i will upload soon this track is featured and many other classics..

  • Mandrill, War, Osibisa, and Santana really gave me an appreciation of Afro-Cuban, and Pan American grooves when I was a young child in the early 70's growing up in New York, City. Your music and others are like a blue print to my musical soul. Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you, for all the great music. "Just Outside of Town" and "Solid" are masterpieces!

  • my goodness, what memories, I was 18 and out of my mind. Those were the days.

This is the reason, i cannot stand all the electronics of the music today. If it were for frankie beverly and maze (with real intruments) i don't know what i would do

  • played keyboards with omar in a NYC band called luna. great experience... leaned a lot about playing tastefully and phrasing. thanks, omar!

  • I loved you guys. Randall's Island 1975

  • THAT is riduculously TIGHT....funk on!

  • Hi Neftalisantiago, Did you guys ever play with WAR back then? Did you guys ever collaborate or hang out? I wish you guys would've did a major jam session together.

I was 4 when Fencewalk came out but I remember me & my lil sister coming in first on Easter Sunday at a Kiddie Hop Disco in Philly.

"We won two chocolate bunnies" (LOL)

It was on Fencewalk that we did it . :-)

  • Neftali,

Did you guys ever record a full length (over 3 minutes) studio version of "Cohelo?"

  • msmcw, Well studio version no, but on our live album we have a full version.

  • @neftalisantiago wow im so humbled my brother , u guys were classic......r u guys playing anywhere in the world now....man i would go anywhere to see u live!!!

    devoted fan!!!!!!!

  • Loves me some Jim Croce!!!!

  • Damn, Neftali! You don't have the rest of it?! I wanted to see Omar go off!

  • Sorry junedeon I really don't.

  • Oh well, I guess something is better than nothing! If you have another live clip somewhere of you guys performing this one, PLEASE, PLEASE post it! Thanx, man. Big fan too.

  • DAMN RIGHT !!!

  • classic

  • Neftali, i'm surprised you don't remember me, but people have different memories. I never forget a person. I know you remember Jon and Pat Way. Or Bill O'Brien. Or Mickey Marto. You might recognize me on youtube-gary schipper.

  • Madrill could be considered as latin rock band or a funk band?

  • Hey benjlm,

We were both and much more.

    Thanks for viewing.

  • Thanks to you for making good music and upload this video :)

  • I went to J.F.K. High School in Willingboro,NJ with Neftali Santiago, the drummer.

  • Gary,

This is Neftali. Sorry but that was a long time ago. Do you have a year book?

  • Pound 4 pound, one of the BEST funk bands of our tiempo!

    Ruiz.

  • Thank You so much for your comment.

  • All the bands were great with the exception of maybe ike & tina-well past their best time

  • The rest of the bands (except Ike n Tina) might as well have gone home.

  • Not enough, please get more...

  • You guys were one of the best FUNK bands ever!!!... FUNKY ASS SHIT!!!... My band still plays FENCEWALK,HANG LOOSE and MANGO MEAT.MANDRILL will live FOREVER!!!..

Thank you so much and let us know about getting vidz on disc.

  • Neftali, will you guys ever get back together and start performing again?

  • saanzacs,

Maybe for one reunion date, maybe.

  • Neftali (or anyone else) can U tell me if their is a boxset available of your work?

If no WHY THE HELL NOT!

    Just love to see it!

Honestly still getting caught up on all yur great stuff I missed along the way!

I wonder if there are any great tracks or live stuff that is unreleased.

  • well amozon or another company might still have afew. they went fast only 5000 where released.

  • dostfez,

Yes there are many track unreleased.

  • Jamaica Queens did the Fence Walk to this jam!!!

  • Where is part 2?? Man that wasn't long enough. Thanks

  • Thank You very Much!

  • Man this is sooooooo badass!!!!!!!!!

  • where are the new R & B bands

the New Issac Hayes.Curtis Mayfield, Quiny Jones,Teddy Riley,Kool &the gang

The old bands have to play their old stuff no problem Well there is a problem black radio won't play their new stuff anway

Who to say it would be any good but can.t be any worser than what out here now

  • Great footage - I'd love to see more! I lived next door to Ric and his family growing up, and would hear the band practicing at night when I was in bed. Great memories. Mandrill definitely deserves more recognition, and Ric always amazed me, balancing the music with his career as an MD - the dude was like superman.

    Thanks again for the post!

  • yo - this is stank!! when i started playing trumpet as a kid, this was the first song i learned by ear from an old record. geez this band was unbelievable and one of the reasons i've dropped all the drum machines, vocoders, etc. and gone back to something real yo! inspirational yo!

  • This band is on my all time top 5! I think I was born 20 years too late though. Would have been nice to be at one of those shows back then! Thanks for the video.

  • I got the hole collection

  • joken20,

very impressed. thank you for your loyalty to our band.

  • the best band !!!

  • Rocked many a 70's house party with Mandrill. Love all their music but "house of wood" is still one of my favorites. I can still smell that special aroma, lol.

  • Funk is for all mankind. God made us funky!

  • Comment removed

  • One of my most memorable concert moments back in the 70's I saw Claude Coffee Cave some how lock up a B3 to keep holding a note while he walked away from the organ- tripped me the f**k out!

  • I'm still crackin' up from your comment. Mandrill was an inspiration to me in the 70s. They were waaaay ahead of their time....might still be....

  • Hey BlaxisDuende,

What comment was that. Do you know who your talking to?

  • CJAMS1000,

Coffee simply put a match book in between the keys and it held the note. Simple but brilliant at the same time. It tripped out many of fans.

  • @neftalisantiago Yeah he was good as were all of you. Man I just can't say enough good things about this group. In fact whenever my family and friends get together and talk about music all I have to do is say "the group" and everyone knows that I am talking about Mandrill. 'nuff said"

  • I saw u guys in philly last year at the jazz festival...despite the sound man messin up, u guys still did an amazing performance.....ur music has been such an inspiration to my dance n life....nuff respect peace!!!

  • didnt know that thes guys are from panama

  • cornbread,

Yea the Wilson brothers are from Panama only. We are all from different backrounds and thats what makes the Mandrill sound so unique.

  • heard these guys today at my guitar institute, thought they sounded really good so had to look them up!

have to say they're prob no. 2 next to tower of power! no one touches those guys, lol, but yeah awesome stuff! gotta love it! :)

  • @Yix777 No son, tower of power cannot touch Mandrill listen some more especially songs like Gillie Hines, Love one another, Children of the Sun, Keep on Rolling. Man you just don't know, must be a young man.

  • Mandrill Brought the FUNK!

  • I stand corrected Nefti! Honestly, I misread the thread (it said "movin" when it obviously is "run-in"). But Bro, I was down with Soul Train and In Concert back then. I was in my "Funk Prime" in the early and late 70's. I'm 51 man! That was the reason for the "little" brother thing... Can't wait for the "more to come"!

  • Neftali, Thank you for posting these videos. My name is Luis and I'm Omars "little" brother. You made an old man very happy. I haven't had the chance to see the band since the 70's. Seeing all that Soul Train and In Concert stuff was awesome, made me feel young again. A million thanks, bro.

    Que dios lo bendiga.

  • Hey nice to hear from you. You are very welcome my friend.

  • So can you settle an argument about what the first line says? The most popular opinion is "Hey, gotcha big mouth movin', but it's not what you say, it's what you do." Is that right?

  • Don't know if being Omars "little" brother makes me an authority but that is the lyric as I know it.

  • Dear loudog58,

Sorry little Bro your wrong about the lyric in Fencewalk.

  • Dear candismile123,

Yes I can settle that argument the line is:

"Hey got your big mouth run-in but it's not what you say, it's what you do". That is the lyric I was there when it was written by Lou Wilson.

  • Wow loudog58,

Very cool Omars Bro. You were probably too young to see these back in the day. I am so happy you enjoyed them. More to come.

  • Yo Neftali, we used to do the FenceWalk (dance)in DC during the 70's!

  • That song was just getting ready to get...HOT!

    That song is wicked!

  • how live is that? :)

  • Fencewalk was seriously funky as hell man, bought the Composite Truth albulm, and loved it since 1973!

  • where's the gitar solo, omar was cheated!

  • right before the gitar solo. omar was cheated!!

  • The show featured the whole song but I only have as much as you see. My thought was to show the original Composite Truth line-up.

  • We play this song and many other Mandrill songs at "The Boogie Radio"! Google us...we can't post URL's here :/

  • Hello Boogie Radio,

It's always good to here Mandrill music played on the airwaves of all kind. Keep in touch and send me an email sometime.

  • Where's the rest of it?!?!

  • RIP Fudgie Kae Solomon (bassist)

  • Hello saanzacs,

Yea I miss him like crazy. I have never played with another bass player with his feel.

  • THANK you!!!!!!!!

    rockin!

  • I listened to this group SO MUCH when I was in college . . . they are awesome.

  • Ooohhh! This is sick! but damn, I wish I could've seen when the horns and electric guitar go off!!

  • first video footage ive seen...heard a lot....smokin as usual

  • suede!

  • AHHHHH SOOOOKIE-SOOKIE NOW!!

I'm Fence-Walkin In Front Of My Laptop!

  • Can you please describe to you just how one does the Fencewalk. I'm 36 and I cant say I know this dance unlike the bump, the stomp etc...

  • If you have any relatives over 45, they should be familiar with it...I'm sure they'll be happy describe or show it to you.

Or perhaps if you could get ahold to an old episode of Soul Train with Mandrill on it doing this song, you will see the dancers doing it. It was very popular.

  • Dear elogan72,

I have never heard of a "Fencewalk" dance. Who told you there was a dance? There is a dance for "Can You Get It". There is a you tube video in my favorites.

  • "THE BOMB"....."ZEEK DA FREAK"

  • Where's Claude Coffee Cave, is he with the group?

  • Coffee is not currently with the group.

  • Who sang the lead on 'House of Wood'?

  • Carlos Wilson sang that

  • LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT......

  • I wrote on another post that the Barkays's Holy Ghost is the best funk song (the longer version)but Fencewalk is one of the most important. Mandrill was one of the first true world-hopping bands. Their sound was eclectic yet accessible and funky. The epitome of what Black bands could be and sadly may never be again.

  • Dear Neftali, THANK YOU!! I have to tell you that my sister and I had MAJOR crushes on you as kids. And I still listen to your music quite often. The two-disc "best of" sets is one of my absolute favorites. Great workout and chill-out music. LOVE YOU!

  • Sampling should put into law as a crime...Because it's just stealing...No wonder the state of Black music is so weak..Not enough young musicians and too many "push button" phonies...

  • The almighty dollar and record companies have made sure to produce a product in a assembly line manner. Hiphop is the "inthing" so they are capitalizing by finding any body that is looking for quick cash not worrying about creativity. Artist are not trying to actually spend the time to really be creative. Musicians today think creativity is finding a record that hasn't been sampled or a classic r&b jam to throw them ridiculous drum machines over.

  • Thank you! THANK you! THANK YOU! You know what's up!!!!!

  • It's about time some one said what us over 50 have been thinking, No musicanship no one wants to take the time to learn to play an instrument? I play 3, guitar, bass, and I'm teaching my grand daughter piano, oh yeah and a little harmonica. How do you jam with a turntable?

  • greenmean1,

    Thank you appreciate the respect.

  • Greenmean1, you are the man. i agree with you. that was music. these guys have real musical talent , unlike these want to be's that have no musical talent at all. It is ok to borrow something from other musican, but atribute something orignal of your own talents besides a beat box or other electronic gadgets.

  • Mr. Santiago thank you for uploading these treasures, I remember listening to these songs in my neighborhood and when I started buying the albums on vinyl in the early 90's I realized how great Mandrill were. EWF and P-Funk are great but because black music had so many great groups and singers too many didn't get the recognition they deserved. Mandrill IS the truth !!!

  • Dear newsoul,

Your welcome. I'm glade you are enjoying them.

    God Bless

  • Hey Neftali , do you have any news about Andre Locke from the early Arista years...???

  • This is some funky ass shit..damn! Can't help but curse..ha ha.. They tore it up! Listen to that horn section and the bass line..
